  • Adrian Sanchez: Announces retirement

Sanchez has announced his retirement from professional baseball, Jessica Camerato of MLB.com reports.

Sanchez, 32, had been playing in independent ball this season with the Staten Island FerryHawks. The utility player spent parts of four major-league seasons with the Nationals, batting .262/.287/.328.

  • Nationals' Adrian Sanchez: Headed to minor-league camp

The Nationals reassigned Sanchez to minor-league camp Monday, Matt Weyrich of NBC Sports Washington reports.

Though he's been a member of the organization since signing with the Nationals as a teenager out of Venezuela in 2007, the now-31-year-old Sanchez has just 204 plate appearances at the MLB level to his name. After having now been outrighted off the 40-man roster on two occasions since 2020, Sanchez looks to be little more than organizational infield depth at this stage of his career. He'll likely report to Triple-A Syracuse when the minor-league season opens in April.

  • Nationals' Adrian Sanchez: Returns to Nationals

Sanchez signed a minor-league deal with the Nationals on Wednesday, according to the MLB transaction log.

Sanchez has spent his entire career in the Nationals' organization, though his future with the club appeared in jeopardy after he was designated for assignment in September. However, he now returns on a minor-league deal and could serve as a depth infielder in Washington in 2022.

  • Nationals' Adrian Sanchez: Clears waivers

Sanchez cleared waivers and accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A Rochester on Thursday, Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports.

Sanchez was cast off the 40-man roster Monday, but he'll opt to remain in the organization rather than hitting free agency. He made 37 appearances in Rochester earlier this year and slashed .336/.384/.492 with four homers, 19 runs, 18 RBI and two stolen bases.

  • Nationals' Adrian Sanchez: Designated for assignment

Sanchez was designated for assignment by the Nationals on Monday, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.

Sanchez saw sporadic playing time during his stint with the major-league club, and he'll be cast off the 40-man roster after Jordy Mercer (calf) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list Monday. The 31-year-old appeared in 16 games with the Nationals this year and hit .257 with two doubles, five runs and an RBI.

  • Nationals' Adrian Sanchez: Moves back to bench

Sanchez is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Phillies.

Sanchez went 4-for-15 at the dish while starting in each of the Nationals' last four games, but he'll most likely fill a utility role moving forward with Alcides Escobar (wrist) drawing back into the lineup. While the 34-year-old Escobar isn't a long-term piece for the rebuilding Nationals, he's earned an everyday role for the time being thanks to the serviceable .271/.340/.375 slash line he's provided since joining the big club in early July.

  • Nationals' Adrian Sanchez: Contract selected by Nationals

Sanchez's contract was selected by the Nationals on Friday.

The 30-year-old returned from the injured list in mid-July, and he should now serve as a utility man for the big-league club after Trea Turner (illness) and Josh Harrison were recently traded. Sanchez has slashed .336/.385/.496 with four homers, 19 runs, 18 RBI and two stolen bases in 36 games at Triple-A Rochester this year.

  • Nationals' Adrian Sanchez: Healthy again at Triple-A

Sanchez (undisclosed) was reinstated from Triple-A Rochester's 7-day injured list Saturday and went 1-for-3 with a single in his return to the lineup that day.

Sanchez was healthy to begin the season after an Achilles injury suffered last summer sidelined him for the entire 2020 campaign, but the veteran infielder has still required two stints on the IL in 2021 due to an unspecified issues. He's been productive across his 90 plate appearances on the season, slashing .325/.386/.400.

  • Nationals' Adrian Sanchez: Re-ups with Washington

Sanchez (Achilles) re-signed Thursday with the Nationals on a minor-league contract that includes an invitation to big-league spring training, Brittany Ghiroli of The Athletic reports.

A mainstay on the Washington bench from 2017 through 2019, Sanchez didn't see any action in 2020 after suffering a torn right Achilles' tendon in summer camp that required season-ending surgery. Though the Nationals haven't provided a clear timetable for his recovery, Sanchez's rehab program is expected to extend into the 2021 campaign. Once healthy, Sanchez will likely report to either Triple-A Fresno or Double-A Harrisburg.

  • Nationals' Adrian Sanchez: Outrighted off roster

Sanchez (Achilles) cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Fresno on Friday, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.

Sanchez is expected to miss a fair portion of the 2021 campaign while recovering from a torn Achilles tendon. The move means he won't be taking up space on the 40-man roster while working his way back from the injury.

  • Nationals' Adrian Sanchez: Out with torn Achilles

Sanchez was placed on the 60-day injured list with a torn right Achilles, Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports.

The bench infielder must have suffered the injury sometime since spring training was shut down. He won't play in 2020 and may miss the start of the 2021 season as well.

  • Nationals' Adrian Sanchez: Placed on minor-league IL

Updating a previous report, the Nationals relayed Monday that Sanchez (Achilles) was placed on the minor-league injured list and isn't included as part of the big club's 60-man player pool, Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports.

The Nationals had previously announced Sunday that Sanchez had been placed on the 60-day injured list after tearing his right Achilles' tendon in a workout a few weeks ago. However, because he was optioned to Double-A Harrisburg in late March before he suffered the injury, he'll revert to the minor-league IL rather than the MLB team's IL. Unfortunately for Sanchez, the transaction means he won't be eligible for major-league payment and service time while he recovers from surgery that will keep him sidelined throughout the 2020 season, and likely, a decent chunk of the 2021 campaign. The move still leaves one spot open on the 40-man roster for the Nationals, though the team won't be extended an extra spot in the 60-man player pool to replace Sanchez.

  • Nationals' Adrian Sanchez: Optioned to minors

Sanchez was optioned to Double-A Harrisburg on Thursday, Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports.

Sanchez was always expected to open the season in the minors, and he did little to change those plans by slashing .250/.269/.417 across 24 plate appearances before spring training was suspended. He'll stick in Harrisburg rather than Triple-A Fresno for proximity reasons, in case he needs to get to Washington in a hurry.

  • Nationals' Adrian Sanchez: Not making impact this spring

Sanchez is slashing .250/.269/.417 through 24 spring plate appearances with one home run and a 1:4 BB:K.

The 29-year-old was expected to begin the season in the minors after the Nats added plenty of veteran infield depth over the winter, and Sanchez isn't making much of a case to change those plans. As he did last season, he could spend most of the campaign at Double-A Harrisburg rather than Triple-A Fresno for proximity reasons, in case he needs to get to Washington in a hurry, but emergency callups remain his best path back to the majors.

  • Nationals' Adrian Sanchez: Out with stomach virus

Sanchez will be away from the team for a few days due to a stomach virus, Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports.

It sounds like he will be away for this weekend's series against the Braves. Wilmer Difo will be the primary utility infielder in his absence.

  • Nationals' Adrian Sanchez: Recalled from minors

The Nationals recalled Sanchez from Double-A Harrisburg ahead of Sunday's 9-3 win over the Marlins.

The 29-year-old infielder will rejoin the Nationals for his eighth stint of the season, with his previous seven trips to the big leagues yielding only 29 at-bats. Expect Sanchez's playing time to remain scarce in September, as he'll merely function as a depth piece in the infield.

  • Nationals' Adrian Sanchez: Called up from Double-A

The Nationals recalled Sanchez from Double-A Harrisburg on Monday, Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports.

Sanchez may only be in store for a temporary stay with the Nationals after second baseman Brian Dozier (personal) was placed on the paternity list. Asdrubal Cabrera is expected to act as the primary option at the keystone until Dozier rejoins the Nationals in 1-to-3 days, leaving Sanchez to fill a utility infield role while he's up with the big club.

  • Nationals' Adrian Sanchez: Demoted to Double-A

Sanchez was optioned to Double-A Harrisburg on Tuesday.

Sanchez went 2-for-7 with a walk and two strikeouts during his latest big-league stint (six games). He'll head to Double-A after the Nationals announced the signing of Asdrubal Cabrera.

  • Nationals' Adrian Sanchez: Recalled to majors

Sanchez was recalled from Double-A Harrisburg ahead of Saurday's game against the Dodgers.

Kyle Barraclough was optioned to Double-A in a corresponding move. Sanchez will provide some depth in the middle infield while Howie Kendrick continues to see time at first base with Ryan Zimmerman on the injured list. The 28-year-old Sanchez has only made two starts in the majors this season, going 4-for-20 with seven strikeouts, and has served primarily as a pinch hitter.

  • Nationals' Adrian Sanchez: Up Wednesday as 26th man

The Nationals recalled Sanchez from Double-A Harrisburg to serve as the 26th man for Wednesday's doubleheader with the Rockies, Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports.

Sanchez won't be in the lineup for the first game of the twin bill and may not receive a starting nod for the nightcap either, but he'll at least provide some depth in the infield for a Nationals squad that lacked a true backup at shortstop beyond Trea Turner. Over 207 plate appearances at Harrisburg this season, Sanchez was slashing .330/.372/.503 with six home runs and nine stolen bases.
