  • Jesus Aguilar: Signs with team in Japan

Aguilar signed a one-year contract Wednesday with the Seibu Lions in Japan.

Aguilar slashed just .221/.281/.385 over 36 games (115 plate appearances) last season with the Athletics before being released in June. He then joined Atlanta on a minor-league deal and played out the remainder of the 2023 campaign at Triple-A Gwinnett. The 33-year-old first baseman will look to rediscover his power stroke in Nippon Professional Baseball.

  • Braves' Jesus Aguilar: Signs minor-league pact

Atlanta signed Aguilar to a minor-league contract Tuesday.

Aguilar was released by the Athletics on June 4, and the veteran first baseman has found a new home a little over a week later. The 32-year-old slashed .221/.281/.325 with five homers over 36 games with Oakland before he was booted off the roster. Aguilar could provide bench help for Atlanta in 2023, but the team will have to add him to the 40-man roster in order to promote him to the big-league club.

  • Jesus Aguilar: Let go by Oakland

Aguilar was released by the Athletics on Sunday.

Aguilar was designated for assignment by Oakland on Monday, and he'll become a free agent after going unclaimed on waivers. The 32-year-old has slashed .221/.281/.385 with five home runs, nine RBI and eight runs over 36 games this season.

  • Athletics' Jesus Aguilar: Dropped from 40-man roster

The Athletics will designate Aguilar for assignment Monday, Daniel Alvarez-Montes of reports.

The 32-year-old has struggled to a .221/.281/.385 slash line this season while striking out 27.2 percent of the time. That being said, he's batting .280 with four home runs, eight RBI and five runs over 50 at-bats versus southpaws in 2023, making him a potential platoon option at first base or designated hitter for another squad. He'll first be subject to the waiver process, but if he goes unclaimed, he'll likely elect free agency and then look to catch on with another organization.

  • Athletics' Jesus Aguilar: Filling short-side platoon role

Aguilar will serve as Oakland's designated hitter and cleanup batter in Sunday's game against the Royals.

Though he'll enter the lineup with southpaw Ryan Yarbrough on the bump for Kansas City, Aguilar appears to have settled into a pure short-side platoon role for the Athletics at this stage. The 32-year-old has been on the bench in five of Oakland's last six matchups against right-handed starting pitchers.

  • Athletics' Jesus Aguilar: Launches fifth homer

Aguilar went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in a win over the Reds on Sunday.

Aguilar's first-inning 428-foot blast to left center scored Brent Rooker to give the Athletics an early 2-0 lead. The veteran pushed his season slash line to an impressive .270/.321/.500 with his multi-hit effort, already his sixth such tally of the campaign.

  • Athletics' Jesus Aguilar: Grabs some pine

Aguilar is absent from the Athletics' lineup for Thursday's game versus the Angels.

The A's are going with Brent Rooker at designated hitter and Ryan Noda at first base against Shohei Ohtani. Aguilar had two homers in the first game of the series but was hitless in the next two contests.

  • Athletics' Jesus Aguilar: Hammers two homers

Aguilar went 3-for-4 with two solo home runs in Monday's victory against the Angels.

The veteran slugger went back-to-back with Brent Rooker in both the first and third innings against Angels starter Jose Suarez. Aguilar has gone deep three times in his last three games after an 11-game drought. He's now slashing .274/.324/.500 with six extra-base hits and seven RBI through 68 plate appearances.

  • Athletics' Jesus Aguilar: Hits second homer of year

Aguilar went 2-for-3 with a solo homer and one run scored in Saturday's loss to the Rangers.

Aguilar was the lone bright spot for Oakland, as he was the only player on the team to have a multi-hit game. The journeyman first baseman is now slashing .259/.317/.407 with two homers and five RBI. The 32-year-old will likely keep getting consistent playing time as a reliable veteran presence on this struggling A's team.

  • Athletics' Jesus Aguilar: Gets Tuesday off

Aguilar is not in the starting lineup for Tuesday's contest against the Cubs.

Aguilar will take a seat, with Ryan Noda at first and Aledmys Diaz serving as designated hitter. In his first year with the A's the 33-year-old Aguilar has registered a .656 OPS with one homer over 52 plate appearances and 14 games.

  • Athletics' Jesus Aguilar: Out of Sunday's lineup

Aguilar is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Mets.

Aguilar has a .670 OPS through 47 plate appearances this season and will take a seat Sunday for the second time in Oakland's past three games. Brent Rooker will serve as the designated hitter and bat third in the series finale versus New York.

  • Athletics' Jesus Aguilar: Sitting out Friday

Aguilar isn't starting Friday against the Mets.

After going 4-for-13 with an RBI and a run scored in Oakland's last series against Baltimore, Aguilar will take a seat for Friday's series opener with New York. Brent Rooker will take over as designated hitter and bat third.

  • Athletics' Jesus Aguilar: Takes seat Monday

Aguilar is out of the lineup for Monday's game in Baltimore.

Aguilar will see a streak of five consecutive starts come to an end Monday while Athletics manager Mark Kotsay gives Aledmys Diaz a day out of the field to serve as the team's designated hitter. Through 30 plate appearances on the season, Aguilar is hitting .222 with a home run and three RBI.

  • Athletics' Jesus Aguilar: Powers offense in loss

Aguilar went 2-for-5 with a three-run home run and a double in an extra-inning loss to Cleveland on Wednesday.

Oakland trailed 4-0 entering the eighth inning, but the team was able to tie the score in that frame thanks largely to Aguilar's three-run blast off Tim Herrin. The long ball was the veteran's first of the campaign and also accounted for his first three RBI of 2023. The paltry A's offense may prevent Aguilar from being much of a run producer this season, and after slashing .235/.281/.379 in 2022, Aguilar's fantasy outlook isn't very appealing.

  • Athletics' Jesus Aguilar: Not in lineup Monday

Aguilar is not in the starting lineup for Monday's contest against the Guardians, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Aguilar retreats to the bench for Monday's opener against Cleveland, and Ryan Noda will get the start at first base with Ramon Laureano the designated hitter. Aguilar has picked up three hits in 10 at-bats with no extra-base hits to open his first season as a member of the A's.

  • Athletics' Jesus Aguilar: Multi-hit effort Sunday

Aguilar went 2-for-4 in a loss to the Angels on Sunday.

Aguilar generated one of two multi-hit efforts on the afternoon for Oakland in the shutout loss, giving him a 3-for-10 tally in his first series as a member of the Athletics. The veteran slugger has drawn three consecutive starts at first base to open the season but is also expected to put in ample time at designated hitter as the campaign unfolds.

  • Athletics' Jesus Aguilar: Solid spring results at plate

Aguilar is hitting .261 (6-for-23) with two doubles, six RBI, five walks, a hit-by-pitch and three runs across 10 Cactus League games.

While he's yet to leave the yard, Aguilar has put forth a productive spring at the plate thus far and encouragingly struck out just twice in 28 plate appearances. Aguilar has never been able to re-ascend to the heights of his career-best 35-homer 2018 season with the Brewers, but he proved he still had some solid pop in his bat a year ago while belting 35 extra-base hits, including 16 round trippers, across 129 games with the Marlins and Orioles. Aguilar is slated to play on a near-everyday basis at either first base or designated hitter to open the 2023 campaign.

  • Athletics' Jesus Aguilar: Expected to play every day

Aguilar is expected to receive everyday playing time between first base and designated hitter, Athletics general manager David Forst told Martin Gallegos of on Friday.

Forst was speaking to reporters after the A's made their one-year, $3 million contract with Aguilar official. The 32-year-old put up just a .661 OPS over 129 games for the Marlins and Orioles last season, but it's not a surprise to hear the plan is to play him regularly in 2023 given the state of Oakland's roster. Still, it's difficult to imagine Aguilar will have much fantasy utility outside of deep leagues. With Aguilar around, Seth Brown figures to play the outfield more, assuming he's not traded.

  • Athletics' Jesus Aguilar: Signing deal with A's

Aguilar is set to sign a contract with the Athletics, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.

It's a one-year, $3 million deal, adds USA Today's Bob Nightengale. Aguilar largely struggled at the dish for both the Marlins and Orioles in 2022, ultimately finishing with a .235/.281/.379 slash line over 507 plate appearances. The 32-year-old first baseman/DH has some pop left in his bat, however, and appears to have picked the right spot in Oakland to maximize his potential for playing time in 2023.
