Wong will start at second base and bat ninth in Wednesday's game against the Padres. Though he's slashing just .079/.186/.105 over the past month, Wong will pick up a third consecutive start at second base. Meanwhile, rookie Jose Caballero is on the bench for the second straight contest while he endures a slump of his own. Caballero appeared to have supplanted Wong as the Mariners' primary second baseman earlier in the season, but with both now struggling to produce at the dish, manager Scott Servais may prefer to have the veteran and two-time Gold Glove Award winner at the keystone.... Mariners' Kolten Wong: Getting start
Wong is starting at second base and batting ninth Wednesday versus the Yankees. It's the first start since Saturday for the 31-year-old, who has been ceding most of the playing time at second base to Jose Caballero of late. Wong will be going up against New York righty Clarke Schmidt.... See More ... See Less -
Mariners' Kolten Wong: Sets table out of bottom of order
Wong went 0-for-2 with two walks and two runs in a loss to the Pirates on Friday. The veteran infielder worked out of the bottom of the order, teeing up Julio Rodriguez and J.P. Crawford for RBI opportunities in the fifth and seventh innings, respectively. Wong's start was only his fourth since May 15 and once again came as a result of an off day for the productive Jose Caballero, who's occasionally been given a seat against right-handed pitching. Wong's still slashing an abysmal .167/.259/.196 across 116 plate appearances.... See More ... See Less -
Mariners' Kolten Wong: On bench again versus righty
Wong is not in the Mariners' starting lineup for Friday's game in Atlanta, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. It marks two games in a row that Wong has been on the bench in favor of Jose Caballero against a right-hander, as it looks like the former is seeing his long-side platoon role slip away. Wong is batting just .177/.259/.231 on the season and hasn't been sharp defensively, either.... See More ... See Less -
Mariners' Kolten Wong: Could be losing starting job
Wong could begin to lose playing time to Jose Caballero at second base, Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times reports. Caballero is slashing .298/.393/.362 through 56 plate appearances since making his big-league debut but has been on the short side of a platoon at the keystone. Wednesday, however, he got the start against right-hander Brayan Bello. Wong is slashing just .177/.259/.231 on the season and has struggled at times defensively, as well. "We'll see," manager Scott Servais said before Wednesday's game. "You're trying to put guys out there that are going well. Certainly, Kolten has got a long track record of being a really productive player in this league. But you know as I've often said, 'It's a do-good league.' It is a results-driven league and it's the big leagues. It's kind of the way it is. So again, we'll see what Cabby brings tonight and we'll go from there." Caballero went 1-for-2 with two walks, an RBI and a run scored in Wednesday's loss to Boston.... See More ... See Less -
Mariners' Kolten Wong: Benched against Boston
Wong is out of the starting lineup Wednesday against the Red Sox, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports. Wong went 1-for-5 while making an error and also allowing a weak pop-up to fall in for a hit during Tuesday's 9-4 loss. He'll retreat to the bench for Wednesday's finale, even though he holds the platoon advantage with right-hander Brayan Bello on the mound for Boston. Jose Caballero will hit ninth and play second base in Wong's stead.... See More ... See Less -
Mariners' Kolten Wong: On bench versus lefty
Wong is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Tigers. Wong will once again head to the bench with a left-hander, Joey Wentz, pitching for Detroit. The 32-year-old remains in the strong side of a platoon at second base, with Jose Caballero filling the short side and batting seventh Sunday.... See More ... See Less -
Mariners' Kolten Wong: Sitting against southpaw
Wong is out of the starting lineup for Tuesday's game against Texas. Wong will take a seat on the bench with southpaw Andrew Heaney on the hill for the Rangers. Sam Haggerty will handle second base and hit ninth in Wong's absence.... See More ... See Less -
Mariners' Kolten Wong: Plunked twice in return
Wong (wrist) went 0-for-1 with two hit-by-pitches in a loss to the Rangers on Monday. Wong didn't exactly have a soft landing in his return from a one-game absence, but he was able to get through his pair of plunkings unscathed. The veteran second baseman has been progressively clawing his way out of a cavernous early-season hole, hitting .370 (10-for-31) over his last nine games.... See More ... See Less -
Mariners' Kolten Wong: Listed in starting nine after all
Wong (wrist) is starting at second base and batting ninth Monday against the Rangers. Wong wasn't listed in Seattle's initial starting lineup, but he was added to the card after J.P. Crawford was announced out shortly before first pitch. Wong is 3-for-9 with a double and five RBI through three games in May.... See More ... See Less -
Mariners' Kolten Wong: Out of lineup Monday
Wong (wrist) is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Rangers. Wong injured his wrist in Saturday's victory over the Astros and has yet to return to the lineup. Jose Caballero will hit eighth against Texas while handling the duties at second base.... See More ... See Less -
Mariners' Kolten Wong: Sitting out Sunday
Wong (wrist) is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Astros. Though Wong will take a seat for the series finale after he injured his left wrist in Saturday's 7-5 win, X-rays returned negative, and the 32-year-old believes he'll be good to go after a couple days of treatment and some extra taping on the wrist, per Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times. Jose Caballero will step in for Wong at the keystone Sunday.... See More ... See Less -
Mariners' Kolten Wong: X-rays negative on wrist
Wong (wrist) underwent X-rays that came back negative Saturday, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports. Wong was forced to exit Saturday's win over the Astros in the fifth inning after he landed on his left wrist awkwardly diving for a ground ball, but the postgame imaging is a good sign moving forward. Manager Scott Servais said after the contest that Wong is considered day-to-day heading into Sunday's series finale with Houston. Jose Caballero replaced him in Saturday's contest and could draw a start at second base Sunday.... See More ... See Less -
Mariners' Kolten Wong: Continues RBI barrage Friday
Wong went 1-for-3 with a three-run double in a loss to the Astros on Friday. A day after breaking through with a pair of hits, including a two-run single, Wong cleared the bases in the fifth inning with his timely two-bagger. The veteran infielder is now hitting .417 (10-for-24) over his last seven games, raising his average 101 points to .195 in the process after he went 5-for-53 over his first 17 contests of the campaign. Daimon Eklund of MLB.com reports Wong credits his decision to scrap a leg kick that was part of his swing as a primary reason for his newfound success, with the 32-year-old noting it was leading to him "missing the balls I should be hitting."... Mariners' Kolten Wong: Rare success at plate Thursday
Wong went 2-for-4 with a go-ahead two-run single in a win over the Athletics on Thursday. Highlights at the plate have been rare for the veteran infielder thus far, but he produced one Thursday. The single snapped a 3-3 tie and closed out the scoring on the afternoon while pushing Wong's batting average over his last six games to a blistering .429 (9-for-21).... See More ... See Less -
Mariners' Kolten Wong: Out Wednesday vs. lefty
Wong is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Athletics, Sonja Chen of MLB.com reports. Wong continues to sit against left-handed pitching, and the veteran infielder will begin Wednesday's game against the Athletics on the bench with JP Sears on the mound for Oakland. Jose Caballero is hitting eighth and playing second base in Wong's place.... See More ... See Less -
Mariners' Kolten Wong: Sitting Tuesday against Oakland
Wong is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Athletics, Sonja Chen of MLB.com reports. Wong normally sits against southpaws, but in this case the veteran second baseman will begin Tuesday's contest on the bench against right-hander Mason Miller. Jose Caballero gets the start at second base and will hit eighth.... See More ... See Less -
Mariners' Kolten Wong: Not in lineup
Wong is absent from the Mariners' lineup for Thursday's contest in Philadelphia, Shannon Drayer of Seattle Sports 710 AM reports. Wong has yet to make a start against a left-hander this season and will be on the bench for this one against Phillies southpaw Matt Strahm. Jose Caballero will be at second base Thursday for the Mariners.... See More ... See Less -
Mariners' Kolten Wong: Three-hit afternoon in loss
Wong went 3-for-4 with a run in a loss to the Cardinals on Sunday. The veteran infielder has been mired in a season-long funk at the plate prior to Sunday, when he posted his most productive effort of the campaign. Wong had only one other multi-hit effort on his 2023 resume before the three-knock afternoon, although he's also been partly victimized by an atypically low .182 BABIP and a career-high 45.5 percent flyball rate.... See More ... See Less -
Mariners' Kolten Wong: Not starting Friday
Wong isn't in the Mariners' lineup Friday against the Cardinals. Wong will take a seat Friday with the left-handed Steven Matz set to start the game for St. Louis. In his place, Jose Caballero will take over at second base and bat eighth.... See More ... See Less
