Padres' Matt Carpenter: On bench again Sunday
Carpenter is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Dodgers.
Carpenter finds himself on the bench for the third time in four games, with two of his absences coming against right-handed starting pitchers, including Sunday's opponent Tony Gonsolin. Though he's occupied the strong side of a platoon at designated hitter for much of the season, Carpenter's hold on that role may be slipping while he's hitting just .111/.200/.111 so far in May.
