Padres rookie right-hander Joe Wieland will soon undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery.

The 22-year-old who was acquired from the Rangers last season as part of the Mike Adams trade hasn't pitched since early May. He has a 4.55 ERA across five starts this season. After the surgery, which should take place within the next two weeks, Wieland will require the standard 12-to-16-month recovery period.

As the San Diego Union-Tribune notes, Wieland will become the second Padres starter to undergo Tommy John this season. Lefty Cory Luebke is the other.
