The Marlins have signed right-handed relief pitcher Jon Rauch to a one-year deal, the team announced Tuesday.

Outfielder Bryan Petersen has been designated for assignment to make room for Rauch.

Rauch, 34, pitched with the Mets in 2012, going 3-7 with four saves and a 3.59 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 42 strikeouts in 57 2/3 innings. Rauch has had at least two major-league saves in each season since 2006.

The Marlins had been in the mix for former closer Jose Valverde, though the team denied yesterday a report that the two sides were close to a deal. With the addition of Rauch, it seems the organization had placed emphasis on adding a reliever with closing experience to the bullpen mix.

Rauch has 62 career saves over a 10-year career that has seen him play for six major-league teams.
