The Cubs have signed Dioner Navarro to a $1.75 million contract for the 2013 season, CBSSports.com insider Jon Heyman reported Thursday

Navarro's career had hit the skids until Devin Mesoraco's late-season suspension in Cincinnati last year opened up playing time. Navarro hit .290/.306/.449 with two home runs in 24 games in backing up Ryan Hanigan during August and September.

The 28-year-old Navarro is expected to serve as the backup for Welington Castillo, a 25-year-old who notched a .265/.337/.418 line in his first significant MLB stint in 2012.
