The Cubs have agreed to sign free-agent outfielder Scott Hairston, according to CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman. The deal is pending a physical. Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports says it's a two-year contract.

Hairston, 32, hit .263/.299/.504 with 20 homers in 398 plate appearances with the Mets last season. As a right-handed hitter he did most of his damage against lefties, with a .286/.317/.550 batting line and 11 homers in 189 plate appearances. Hairston played all three outfield spots and is a .247/.302/.449 career hitter.

The Cubs signed Nate Schierholtz earlier this offseason, so he and Hairston will join an outfield unit that already includes Alfonso Soriano, David DeJesus, and Tony Campana. Top prospect Brett Jackson saw time in the big leagues last year. The Hairston signing could be a precursor to a Soriano trade, something that has been mentioned as a possibility all winter.
