Cubs' Adrian Cardenas breaks up A.J. Burnett's no-hit bid in 8th

Called up from the minors earlier in the day, Cubs rookie Adrian Cardenas broke up A.J. Burnett's no-hit bid with two outs in the eighth inning with a single to right.

Called up from the minors earlier in the day, Cubs rookie Adrian Cardenas broke up A.J. Burnett's no-hit bid with two outs in the eighth inning with a single to right field.

Burnett held the Cubs hitless through 7 2/3 before going to a full count to Cardenas, pinch-hitting in the pitcher's spot. Cardenas lined a sinker to right for the first hit.

Burnett struck out six, walked two and hit a batter before giving up a hit in the eighth inning.

Burnett, 35, threw a no-hitter as a member of the Marlins in 2001. In that no-hitter, he walked nine and struck out seven.

The Cubs have not been no-hit since Sandy Koufax threw a perfect game against the Cubs at Dodger Stadium on Sept. 9, 1965. That was Koufax's fourth and final no-hitter. The Cubs haven't been no-hit at home since earlier that season, when the Reds' Jim Maloney threw a 10-inning no-hitter on Aug. 19, 1965.
