The Cubs are dealing with a short-term injury to David DeJesus. Ryan Dempster is working to get back to action, and Ian Stewart might be done for the season.
- DeJesus is out of Monday's lineup with a sore neck according to ESPN Chicago's Doug Padilla. DeJesus's absence allows Tony Campana his first start in more than a week. Despite stealing 25 bases in just 55 games, Campana has been the primary lineup casualty of Anthony Rizzo's arrival in the North Side. Bryan LaHair is getting the nod in right field, shifting DeJesus to center and Campana to the bench. This is one logjam that could be addressed prior to the trade deadline.
- Dempster threw a 40-pitch bullpen session Monday, Carrie Muskat of MLB.com reports. Dempster said he feels fine and depending on how his arm feels tomorrow, he will proceed with another session Wednesday before determining the next course of action. He remains on track to return around the All-Star break and will be a hot commodity at the deadline if he can return as planned.
- Stewart will undergo surgery on his left wrist next week, Muskat also reports. The wrist has given Stewart problems for much of the season, resulting in multiple scratches from the lineup. Stewart is expected to miss 6-8 weeks, and as such his chances to play again in 2012 are slim. Luis Valbuena has filled in as the starter of late and is the favorite to hold the job.
