2023 Charles Schwab Challenge leaderboard: Viktor Hovland in pursuit of co-leaders Harry Hall, Adam Schenk

It wasn't pretty, but it was effective for Harry Hall in the third round at the 2023 Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial Country Club. Commanding the 18- and 36-hole lead, the Englishman who hails from Las Vegas navigated his way around the tricky par 70 en route to a 2-over 72 to maintain his position atop the leaderboard alongside Adam Schenk at 10 under heading into the final day of action.

Hall hit some turbulence early in Round 3 when an ill-advised approach on the par-4 6th settled 40 yards long of the putting surface, resulting in a double bogey. Another double bogey quickly followed in the par-4 7th, and all of sudden Hall was spinning. Typically the time when an unassuming rookie searching for his first PGA Tour victory would cede center stage, the end of Saturday's play could instead prove to be a launching pad for the 25-year-old.

Two back-nine birdies catapulted Hall's back above all the rest and may push him into the driver's seat of a brand new Ford Bronco. However, in order to do so, he will need to skirt past not only Schenk, but also a resurgent Harris English at 9 under and pesky foes Emiliano Grillo and Justin Suh at 6 under.

The leader

T1. Adam Schenk, Harry Hall (-10)

Hall has his eyes on becoming the first wire-to-wire winner at Colonial since Ian Baker Finch, while Schenk has eyes on redeeming himself for his action two months ago. Schenk led after the first three rounds of play at the Valspar Championship in March when disaster struck on the 72nd hole and ultimately led to a runner-up finish outside Tampa.

Schenk has since added a new member to the family, gained some fresh perspective and also lost his form — that was until this week. The former Purdue standout has missed four of his last five cuts and will serve as the experienced member of Sunday's final pair. Despite the disparity in experience, both will be searching for more than just their first wins; major championship exemptions, a massive leap in the FedEx Cup (in a year when only the top 70 qualify for the postseason) and job security will all be on the line.

Other contenders

2. Harris English (-9)

T4. Justin Suh, Emiliano Grillo (-6)

T6. Viktor Hovland, Kevin Streelman, David Lipsky, Byeong Hun An (-5)

T10. Scottie Scheffler, Brian Harman, Aaron Rai, Ben Martin, Chad Ramey, Andrew Putnam (-4)

The world No. 1 has been terrific for the last year and a half, but if there is a weakness in his bag it has to be the putter. He ranked 67th in strokes gained putting out of 72 players on Saturday and has lost nearly five strokes across three rounds on the greens alone. To make matters worse, his effort at Colonial on Saturday marked his third straight poor performance on Moving Day when considering his even-par round at the Byron Nelson and his regression last week at the PGA Championship. It's probably nothing, but it's eye-catching, and his streak of 14 straight top-12 finishes may now be in jeopardy.

Hovland's 66 ages like fine wine

The Norwegian took some time to get his feet underneath him after coming into the week fresh off major disappointment at the PGA Championship. Firing the round of the day with a 4-under 66 on Saturday, Hovland slowly but surely moved up the leaderboard as the day progressed and Colonial continued to bake out. He stands at 5 under and climbed more than 30 spots into the top 10 ahead of the deciding final round despite some bad luck along the way.

2023 Charles Schwab Challenge updated odds and picks

Odds via Caesars Sportsbook

  • Adam Schenk: 21/10
  • Harris English: 12/5
  • Harry Hall: 13/5
  • Viktor Hovland: 18-1
  • Emiliano Grillo: 22-1
  • Scottie Scheffler: 25-1
  • Justin Suh: 30-1
  • Byeong Hun An: 50-1
  • Kevin Streelman: 90-1

The PGA Tour is pushing Colonial to the brink with the course renovation looming on Monday. The course averaged more than a stroke over par on Saturday, and anything under par from the final two in Round 4 should seal the deal. However, things just get weird at this tournament. Sam Burns came back from seven strokes a season ago, and something similar could be in store given the co-leaders. With this in mind, let's take a chance on Hovland (18-1), who appears to have shaken off any signs of a major championship hangover. He is priced close to his pre-tournament odds and is more than capable of making a charge from five back.

Scheffler continues to lurk

After giving back a shot, the world No. 1 has added his second birdie of the day to return to 7 under. He remains five adrift as Harry Hall remains steady through four. The Englishman is even on the day as is Harris English while Emiliano Grillo is 3 under thru 4.

Grillo gets going early

An eagle-birdie start for the Argentine has him at 11 under and just one behind Harry Hall. Grillo has been percolating in recent weeks with strong finishes in designated events such as the RBC Heritage and the Wells Fargo Championship.

Hovland hummin'

The Norwegian has a look on the 16th to reach 6 under for the tournament and 5 under on the day. A slow start felt inevitable for Hovland after last week's disappointment, but he has since gotten his feet underneath him and looks to make a late push into the conversation.

World No. 1 steps onto the golf course

Scottie Scheffler has teed off to begin his third round. He starts the day six strokes off the lead of Harry Hall, but is second in terms of betting favorites just north of 3-1. Let's see what Scheffler can do as he has been dominant from tee to green only to rank narrowly inside the top 100 in strokes gained putting.

Justin Suh surging

The PGA Tour rookie is fresh off a nice run at the PGA Championship, and looks to do something similar Saturday at Colonial. Suh is 4 under through his first eight holes and has reached 6 under for the tournament. He's only a half dozen behind Harry Hall.

Sam Stevens coming alive at a place all too familiar

He came to this tournament as a child, and is making the most of his first appearance as a professional at Colonial Country Club. The former Oklahoma Sooner is 2 under in the early proceedings of the third round and has catapulted his name inside the top 10 of the leaderboard. Despite this movement, Stevens is only 5 under and still a full touchdown and extra point off the lead set by Harry Hall who has yet to begin Round 3.

Colonial showing teeth

There isn't a ton of movement so far on Saturday as Colonial continues to play tough. Rules officials and tournament directors are keen on keeping this place firm and fast as the golf course will be blown up on Monday. Remember Memorial from a few years ago? It may be similar to that level of firmness.

Scheffler poor on last two Saturdays

He had a great chance to win the Byron Nelson, but he faltered. He entered the weekend at the PGA Championship in a share of the lead, but faltered. It is now back-to-back Saturdays that the world No. 1 has been stuck in quick sand. He battled back both times on Sunday, but by that point it was too little too late.

Can anyone make the most of Moving Day?

There are a number of big names narrowly in red figures to begin Saturday and double-digit strokes off the pace. If Hall is to slip, it will open the door for players like Viktor Hovland, Rickie Fowler, Collin Morikawa and potentially more. The golf course is baked out, and conditions will only get more difficult (especially if the wind picks up).

Harry Hall's first weekend lead on the PGA Tour

"You have to manage nerves for the rest of your life," said Hall. "They never go away. All the little tools that I've created in the last few years of professional golf, they'll probably be escalated and there will be new challenges tomorrow, and you've got to accept that. I think no matter who you are, you're always going to have different challenges to face on a daily basis, and mine tomorrow will be being in the final group, a position I've never been in before, and I'm excited for it."

Harris English eyes return to form

The former top 10 player in the world is slowly but surely taking another step in the right direction after undergoing hip surgery in 2022.

"I played good a couple weeks ago at the Wells Fargo in Charlotte, big time event this year on TOUR, elevated a lot of good players there," said English. "I can't remember how many bogey-free rounds I had, but I had a couple out there. Yeah, I just feel like my game's trending in the right direction. I like golf courses like this where par is a good score. With the greens firming up, it's getting pretty tough to control your ball, and I like it when it gets tough. Excited for the weekend, and we'll see where it shakes out this afternoon."

Justin Rose fresh off contending at the PGA

"There's some good scores that have been happening over the first couple of days, but I think the course is tricky," said Rose. "I think it's not going to get any easier; obviously we all know they're digging it up on Monday, so I'd imagine that there's not going to be much water spared over the weekend, so I think the course will get tricky, which should enable a good round of golf to move up quite nicely if we can produce one over the next couple of days or produce two. Yeah, listen, in a good position to make a run."
