  • Blue Jays' Kevin Gausman: Falters in fifth frame Monday

Gausman (2-2) took the loss against Houston on Monday, allowing four runs on six hits and three walks while striking out six batters over six innings. Gausman held Houston scoreless through four innings, but Atlanta got to him for four runs in the fifth. That was more than enough to send the veteran righty to his second loss, as Astros ace Hunter Brown dominated Toronto's lineup. Gausman still holds a solid 3.16 ERA on the campaign, and Monday marked the first time in 2025 that he's given up more than three runs in an outing. He'll look to get back in the win column his next time out, though he's projected for a tough matchup on the road against the Yankees this weekend.

  • Blue Jays' Kevin Gausman: Earns strong win over Atlanta

Gausman (2-1) allowed two runs on six hits while striking out six in six innings in a win over Atlanta on Tuesday. He did not issue a walk. Gausman found himself trailing early after Austin Riley took him deep in the opening frame. Gausman cruised from there, however, allowing four base hits over the next four innings with just one runner reaching scoring position. Matt Olson was able to get a hold of one in the sixth, but the Blue Jays were still leading comfortably. Gausman has posted consecutive starts of six-plus innings and no walks. He's been ace material thus far, posting a 2.49 ERA, 0.71 WHIP and 20:3 K:BB in 25.1 innings. He's set to take the mound again next week versus the Astros on the road.

  • Blue Jays' Kevin Gausman: Fans 10 in dominant start

Gausman did not factor into the decision in Wednesday's win over the Red Sox. He allowed one unearned run on four hits while striking out 10 across eight innings. The lone run Gausman yielded Wednesday came in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Alex Bregman, but it was unearned due to a fielding error that saw Jarren Duran advance from second to third base. Gausman proceeded to steamroll the Red Sox lineup, retiring 21 of the next 23 batters faced while striking out 10 (including five straight punchouts across the fourth and fifth frames) for his second quality start. He's posted a 2.60 ERA, 0.63 WHIP and 14:3 K:BB in his first three outings, and he'll look to earn his second win of 2025 in his next start, which is tentatively slated for next week at home against Atlanta.

  • Blue Jays' Kevin Gausman: Zero strikeouts in loss

Gausman (1-1) allowed three runs on two hits and two walks while failing to record a strikeout over 5.1 innings, taking the loss Friday versus the Mets. Gausman was tagged for a two-run home run by Pete Alonso in the first inning, but he settled down fairly well after that. The Mets started making more noise in the sixth, and Gausman was charged with one of the three runs in that inning. Gausman has allowed five runs over 11.1 innings with a 4:3 K:BB over his first two starts this season. He was given extra rest after his first start, but there was no indication of any physical issues involved in that decision. If he pitches on normal rest his next time out, he would line up for a road start in Boston.

  • Blue Jays' Kevin Gausman: Next start likely on Friday

Blue Jays manager John Schneider said Tuesday that Gausman's next start is likely to come Friday against the Mets, Hazel Mae of Sportsnet reports. Easton Lucas is tentatively lined up to start Wednesday against the Nationals in place of Max Scherzer (thumb), as long as Lucas not needed in relief Tuesday. Gausman would be pitching on seven days' rest if he does indeed take the ball Friday.

  • Blue Jays' Kevin Gausman: Could have start pushed to Friday

The Blue Jays could push Gausman's next start back to Friday against the Mets, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports. Gausman is currently scheduled to take the ball Wednesday versus the Nationals, but the Blue Jays might have Easton Lucas start that day if he's not needed in long relief before then. There does not appear to be anything wrong physically with Gausman, as this would simply give him a couple extra days of rest and also allow him to face the tougher lineup.

  • Blue Jays' Kevin Gausman: Flashes strong velocity Wednesday

Gausman topped out at 96.2 mph with his fastball during his spring debut Wednesday against the Pirates, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports. The 34-year-old right-hander walked one and struck out two over 1.2 scoreless, no-hit innings while tossing 23 of 38 pitches for strikes. Gausman dealt with shoulder trouble last spring that prevented him from getting fully stretched out ahead of Opening Day, and he seemed to be playing catch-up all season with both his velocity and his command on his breaking pitches. Gausman finished with a 3.83 ERA and 21.4 percent strikeout rate -- his worst numbers in those categories since 2019 -- over 181 regular-season innings while averaging just 93.9 mph with his fastball. He spent this winter putting on extra muscle, and it showed in his first Grapefruit League action as he averaged 94.9 mph with his heater. If Gausman begins this season healthy, a bounce-back campaign could well be in the cards, as he produced a 3.16 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 31.1 percent strikeout rate as recently as 2023.

  • Blue Jays' Kevin Gausman: Still building up

Gausman threw live batting practice Sunday and will do one more such session before making his first spring start, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports. Gausman is seemingly a little behind the rest of the Jays starters, as Easton Lucas is currently working in Gausman's spot in the Jays' Grapefruit League rotation. It sounds like Gausman is on track to potentially make his first spring start next week. He showed up to camp intentionally carrying more weight because he says he loses weight throughout the MLB season and wanted to better hold up over the full season. In 2024, he had his lowest strikeout rate (21.4 percent) since 2018 and his highest walk rate (7.4 percent) since 2017.

  • Blue Jays' Kevin Gausman: Sporting 'sturdier' build for 2025

Blue Jays manager John Schneider said that Gausman looks "sturdier" in spring training after the right-hander deliberately put on added weight over the offseason, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports. "I've never really pitched an entire season at over 200 pounds, but I think that might be a possibility for me this year," Gausman said. "We'll see what happens. I usually always lose a good amount of weight during the season, so that's why I try to gain as much as I can, knowing I'll lose some of it." Gausman is listed at 6-foot-2 and 205 pounds on the Blue Jays' official roster, and he's hopeful that by bulking up during the offseason through both his diet and strength training, he'll be able to maintain that weight over the course of the long season. The 34-year-old righty is also optimistic that a sturdier build will boost his odds of staying healthy and having something closer to a normal spring training in 2025. While he didn't go on the injured list at any point in 2024, a bout with shoulder fatigue early in camp slowed his ramp-up process and may have played a part in the steep drop in both his ERA (3.83) and strikeout rate (21.4 percent) compared to his first two seasons in Toronto (3.25 ERA, 29.7 K%).

  • Blue Jays' Kevin Gausman: Ends season on high note

Gausman (14-11) picked up the win Wednesday, allowing one run on four hits and three walks over six innings in a 6-1 victory over the Red Sox. He struck out three. It's been a disappointing campaign overall for Gausman, but the 33-year-old righty still tied his career high in wins with a sharp performance in his last outing. The quality start was his 16th of the season, and Gausman gave up three earned runs or less in his last nine trips to the mound, posting a 2.22 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 43:20 K:BB through 56.2 innings over that stretch. The loss of strikeouts is a worrying sign -- his 21.4 percent K rate in 2024 is a huge drop from the 31.1 percent mark he posted the year before -- but he's still expected to head into spring training next season as one of the veteran anchors for Toronto's rotation.

  • Blue Jays' Kevin Gausman: Cleared to start Wednesday

Gausman (back) is listed as the Blue Jays' probable starter for Wednesday's game against the Red Sox in Toronto. Gausman was in the midst of a no-hitter his last time out Thursday versus the Rangers before he was lifted after five innings due to back tightness. He said after the start that he was feeling better while suggesting that his early exit was precautionary more than anything, and the Blue Jays' decision to include him in the pitching schedule for the final week of the season seemingly verifies as much. Gausman has been in peak form with the season winding down, as he's produced a 2.03 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 40:17 K:BB over 50.2 innings across his last eight starts.

  • Blue Jays' Kevin Gausman: Exits with back tightness

Gausman was removed from Thursday's game against the Rangers due to lower-back tightness. Gausman was able to get through five shutout innings on just 58 pitches while striking out six batters and walking one before his back forced him to make an early departure. The severity of his injury remains unknown, but the Jays will certainly keep a close eye on him leading up to his next start -- tentatively scheduled for Tuesday against the Red Sox.

  • Blue Jays' Kevin Gausman: Goes seven innings in no-decision

Gausman allowed two runs on nine hits and two walks over seven frames during a no-decision Friday. He struck out three in the extra-innings win over St. Louis. Gausman got off to a rocky start, giving up four straight singles to begin the contest, leading to two Cardinal runs. He didn't allow another run after that frame and, at one point, retired 11 straight batters. He's struck out five or fewer batters in seven of his last eight starts, resulting in a disappointing 36:19 K:BB over 50.1 innings. Gausman is sporting a 4.02 ERA with a 153:52 K:BB through 170 innings this season. He's currently in line for a road start against the Rangers next week.

  • Blue Jays' Kevin Gausman: Quality start in loss

Gausman (12-11) took the loss Friday against Atlanta, allowing three runs on six hits and three walks over six innings. He struck out five. Despite being tagged with the loss, the veteran right-hander fared well against Atlanta in this 109-pitch outing, allowing just one extra-base hit -- a Jorge Soler double in the sixth inning. Gausman generated a solid 15 whiffs, including 10 alone on his splitter, and picked up his 14th quality start of the season. After pitching to a middling 4.50 ERA in the first half, the 33-year-old has been much sharper since the All-Star break, going 5-3 with a 3.35 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 46:23 K:BB across 59 innings. He lines up to make his next start against the Mets at home.

  • Blue Jays' Kevin Gausman: Gets no help in Friday's loss

Gausman (12-10) took the loss Friday as the Blue Jays were downed 2-0 by the Twins, giving up two runs on four hits and four walks over 5.2 innings. He struck out four. The veteran righty fought his control at times, tossing only 58 of 103 pitches for strikes, and the inefficiency cost him his 14th quality start of the season. Despite the loss, Gausman turned things around in August, posting a 2.20 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 26:11 K:BB over his last five outings and 32.2 innings. He'll try to extend his hot streak in his next start, which is scheduled to come on the road next weekend in Atlanta.

  • Blue Jays' Kevin Gausman: Stellar in 12th win

Gausman (12-9) allowed a run on two hits and struck out 10 without walking a batter over seven innings to earn the win over the Angels on Sunday. Gausman has dominated the Angels in two of his last three starts, once in Anaheim and once in Toronto. This was the fourth time this year he's reached double digits in strikeouts. The only run on his line Sunday came on a Zach Neto RBI single in the fourth inning. Gausman has four quality starts over his last six outings, and he's gone at least seven innings in each of those quality starts. For the year, the Blue Jays' ace is at a 4.10 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 141:43 K:BB through 151.1 innings over 26 starts. He's projected to make his next start on the road at Minnesota.

  • Blue Jays' Kevin Gausman: Tabbed with loss

Gausman (11-9) took the loss Monday against the Reds, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits and two walks across five-plus innings. He struck out five. Gausman was inefficient Monday, hitting 100 pitches before he retired a batter in the sixth inning. He exited the game with runners on first and second -- though the lead runner reached on a dropped third strike -- and Gausman's replacement Ryan Burr allowed both runners to score. the loss was Gausman's first in seven starts, a stretch where he's logged a 3.42 ERA across 47.1 innings. The 33-year-old is tentatively scheduled to face the Angels this weekend.

  • Blue Jays' Kevin Gausman: Cruises to win

Gausman (11-8) allowed six hits and two walks while striking out five over seven scoreless innings to earn the win Tuesday over the Angels. Gausman has pitched into the seventh inning in five of his last six starts, but this was his most impressive outing in that span. While he's walked multiple batters in five straight starts, he hasn't lost since July 5. The right-hander trimmed his ERA to 4.20 with a 1.26 WHIP and 126:41 K:BB through 139.1 innings over 24 starts this season. His next outing is projected to be at home versus the Reds.

  • Blue Jays' Kevin Gausman: Registers 10th victory

Gausman (10-8) earned the win over Baltimore on Thursday, allowing two runs on three hits and three walks while striking out two batters over eight innings. The only runs against Gausman came on Colton Cowser's two-run homer in the third inning. The veteran hurler yielded only one hit outside of that frame and retired the final eight batters he faced. Gausman notched his fourth quality start over six outings since the beginning of July, and he's gone 4-1 with a 3.70 ERA across 41.1 frames during that span. Despite that solid stretch, Gausman continues to underwhelm in the strikeout department -- he has just 30 punchouts over the aforementioned 41.1-inning span and is on track to average fewer than a strikeout per inning for the first time since 2018.

  • Blue Jays' Kevin Gausman: Escapes from Bronx with no-decision

Gausman came away with a no-decision in Friday's 8-5 win over the Yankees, giving up five runs (four earned) on eight hits and three walks over 4.2 innings. He struck out two. Two-run homers by Aaron Judge and Anthony Volpe accounted for most of the damage off Gausman, as the 33-year-old right-hander saw his three-start win streak snapped. He exited after 4.2 innings and 93 pitches, and it perhaps shouldn't have been surprising that Gausman would take a step back after he tossed a complete game July 27 against the Rangers, especially considering how inconsistent he's been in 2024. He'll take 4.56 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 119:36 K:BB through 124.1 innings into his next outing, which lines up to come at home next week against the Orioles.
