Player Outlook
Ketel Marte set a new career high with 36 home runs last season, four more than he hit during the infamous juiced-ball year of 2019. He also lifted his batting average above .290 after it dipped as low as .240 in 2022. Despite making a trip to the injured list in the second half with an ankle sprain, Marte exceeded 90 runs and 90 RBI for the second time ever, finishing as a top-15 hitter in traditional fantasy formats. Once a part-time outfielder, Marte now plays second base pretty much exclusively. At 31 years old, Marte is a risk to miss time, as he's reached 150 games just twice in his career. However, his plate skills are super steady, propping up his floor. While not a burner, Marte is capable of chipping in 5-to-10 steals given his instincts and efficiency on the base paths. He should continue to bat first or second in the Arizona lineup under manager Torey Lovullo in 2025.

  • Diamondbacks' Ketel Marte: Begins baseball activity

Marte (hamstring) began taking groundballs and swings in a batting cage Friday, Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports reports. As Marte begins baseball activities, his timeline has become more clear. Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo estimated a return for the final week of April or the first week of May. That provides much more definition than the "series of weeks" comment Lovullo offered up earlier this week. While Marte works his way back, Tim Tawa and Garrett Hampson will share second base.

  • Diamondbacks' Ketel Marte: Will miss significant time

Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said Tuesday that Marte will miss a "series of weeks" with a left hamstring strain, Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports reports. "There's no timeline on it," Lovullo said while referring to the injury as a Grade 1 strain. "We just gotta let him heal, let him recover and once we get to that point, we'll start to initiate some baseball activities." Marte sustained the injury last Friday during the Diamondbacks' recent road trip and underwent an MRI when the club returned to Arizona on Monday. His absence leaves a hole in the Arizona lineup, which is being filled defensively by Tim Tawa and Garrett Hampson for now. Geraldo Perdomo has taken over Marte's spot in the order, serving as the leadoff batter against lefties and batting second against right-handers.

  • Diamondbacks' Ketel Marte: Lands on injured list

The Diamondbacks placed Marte on the 10-day injured list Saturday with a left hamstring strain. Marte made an early exit from Friday's contest after hurting himself running to second base on a first-inning double, and he'll now be kept on the sideline until at least April 15. Tim Tawa was recalled from Triple-A Reno to fill the open roster spot, though Garrett Hampson will likely be the one seeing more time at second base until Marte returns.

  • Diamondbacks' Ketel Marte: Strains hamstring Friday

Marte was pulled from Friday's game against Washington due to a strained left hamstring. Marte limped off the field Friday after injuring himself running to second base on a double in the first inning. His diagnosis didn't come with a return timeline, though there's a chance the 31-year-old infielder will end up spending time on the injured list. If that ends up being the case, Garrett Hampson would be the favorite to take over as the Diamondbacks' regular second baseman.

  • Diamondbacks' Ketel Marte: Exits with injury

Marte was removed from Friday's game against the Nationals with an apparent leg injury, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports. Marte seemingly suffered the injury on the basepaths during his first-inning double, which probably could have been a triple if he hadn't pulled up lame into second base. More details on the nature and severity of his injury will have to wait until the D-backs take a closer look at him, though he was visibly in pain while limping off the field.

  • Diamondbacks' Ketel Marte: Getting day off Thursday

Marte is not in the lineup for Thursday's game versus the Yankees. It's the first day off this season for Marte, who agreed to a contract extension with the Diamondbacks on Wednesday. Garrett Hampson will start at second base and bat eighth while Marte gets a breather.

  • Diamondbacks' Ketel Marte: Gets $116M extension

The Diamondbacks signed Marte to a six-year, $116.5 million contract extension Wednesday that includes a player option for the 2032 season, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports. Marte was already under contract through 2027 with a club option for 2028, but this new deal adds additional years and $64 million in new money, $46 million of which is deferred. The 31-year-old second baseman slashed .292/.372/.560 with 36 home runs and 95 RBI for the Diamondbacks last season, finishing third in National League MVP voting.

  • Diamondbacks' Ketel Marte: Drops to second against righty

Marte batted second and went 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored in Friday's 8-1 win over the Cubs. Marte, who logged a second straight two-hit game to start the season, was dropped from leadoff Thursday to second in the order, as he and Corbin Carroll switched places against right-hander Jameson Taillon. Marte is expected to lead off against lefties, as was the case Thursday, and he is 4-for-10 with two doubles and three runs scored to begin the new season.

  • Diamondbacks' Ketel Marte: Three hits Thursday

Marte batted leadoff and went 3-for-4 with a run scored in Thursday's spring game against Seattle. While Marte and Corbin Carroll (back) split leadoff duties in 2024, Marte has batted first in all nine of his Cactus League games so far this spring, including the times when both he and Carroll have played. Marte was the leadoff hitter for 58 games in 2024 and slashed .314/.384/.572 with 16 home runs and 43 RBI in those contests.

  • Diamondbacks' Ketel Marte: Clubs homer

Marte went 2-for-5 with a two-run home run during Sunday's 11-2 win over the Padres. Marte tagged Martin Perez for a two-run home run in the fourth inning, marking the second baseman's 36th long ball of the campaign. In September, Marte has gone 15-for-63 (.238) with five home runs, 12 RBI and 11 runs scored.

  • Diamondbacks' Ketel Marte: Starts Tuesday

Marte started at second base and went 1-for-3 with a walk and a double in Tuesday's 11-0 loss to the Giants. Marte was held out of Monday's starting lineup, as manager Torey Lovullo indicated the second baseman had been grinding and was in the "red zone." With four games left in the regular season and a playoff spot to be won, Marte is expected to be in the starting lineup every day.

  • Diamondbacks' Ketel Marte: Manager explains day off

Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said Monday the decision to hold Marte out of that day's starting lineup was "preventative" and described the second baseman as being in the "red zone," Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports reports. "The left leg, it probably wasn't 100% when he came back, if you guys studied the swings enough, you could recognize he was protecting that space," the manager said. Lovullo added that Marte was available off the bench, and the infielder entered as a pinch hitter in the eighth inning and finished the game at second base. The Diamondbacks lost to the Giants and are now one-and-a-half games ahead of Atlanta for the final wild card spot with five games left (six for Atlanta). Reading between the lines of Lovullo's comments, Monday's lighter-than-normal effort sets up Marte to finish out the season as an everyday lineup presence.

Marte went 2-for-2 with three walks, a home run, a stolen base, two total runs and two total RBI in a 5-0 victory against the Brewers on Saturday. Marte reached base in each of his first four plate appearances, and then capped his performance with a two-run blast in the ninth inning. It was the second straight game with a home run for the second baseman, and he's reached base safely in nine of his last 10 plate appearances. With two RBI Saturday, Marte tied his career-best mark of 92 in a season, and he's already established a new high with 34 home runs on the campaign.

  • Diamondbacks' Ketel Marte: Blasts 32nd home run

Marte went 1-for-4 with a two-run homer and three strikeouts in Monday's 3-2 loss to the Rockies. Marte got the scoring started Monday when he took Antonio Senzatela deep in the first inning. The 32 home runs have tied Marte's career high he set during the 2019 season. The 30-year-old seems to be finding his power stroke again since returning from an ankle injury, as he now has two homers and six RBI over his last five games. Overall, Marte is slashing .292/.366/.553 with 87 RBI in 124 games this season.

  • Diamondbacks' Ketel Marte: Back at second base

Marte started at second base and went 3-for-4 with a double, a home run, four RBI and an additional run scored in Wednesday's 14-4 win over Texas. This was Marte's first game in the field since returning from an ankle injury last week. He served as the designated hitter his first three games back and was hitless over 11 at-bats before breaking out Wednesday. He led off the bottom of the first inning with a double and scored Arizona's first run, then his three-run homer in the fourth upped the Diamondbacks' lead to 8-2. Marte has 31 home runs -- one shy of the career high he set in 2019 -- and 85 RBI through 120 games.

  • Diamondbacks' Ketel Marte: On bench Sunday

Marte is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Astros. Marte went 0-for-7 with a walk and four strikeouts as the designated hitter the past two games after being reinstated from the injured list Friday, and he'll receive a day off for the series finale in Houston. Luis Guillorme is starting at second base while Joc Pederson is back at designated hitter Sunday.

  • Diamondbacks' Ketel Marte: Serves as DH again

Marte started at designated hitter, went 0-for-4 and was hit by a pitch in Saturday's 11-5 loss to Houston. Marte, who was reinstated from the 10-day injured list Friday, served as the DH for a second consecutive game, as it appears the Diamondbacks want to be cautious. He had tried a couple of times to return from the injury in August only to aggravate it before eventually getting time on the IL to heal properly. Marte is hitless in nine plate appearances over the two games but did get a chance to run the bases Saturday, suggesting the ankle is okay now.
