Heyward is not in San Diego's starting lineup against Colorado on Sunday. Heyward will begin Sunday's game in the dugout while Oscar Gonzalez starts in left field and bats fifth against Rockies southpaw Kyle Freeland. Heyward has gone 4-for-15 with two runs scored and a solo home run over his last five outings.... See More ... See Less

Padres' Jason Heyward: Hits first homer of season
Heyward went 1-for-2 with a solo home run and a walk in Saturday's 2-0 victory over the Rockies. Heyward provided an insurance run for San Diego with his 410-foot solo shot in the fifth inning. It was the veteran outfielder's first long ball in what has been a slow start to the campaign, as he's slashing just .182/.243/.303 through 37 plate appearances. Despite those poor numbers, Heyward has been in the lineup consistently against right-handed pitchers, and he's likely to continue working on the strong side of a left-field platoon.... See More ... Padres' Jason Heyward: Idle versus lefty
Heyward isn't in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Cubs. With southpaw Matthew Boyd set to toe the slab for Chicago, the left-handed bat of Heyward will begin Saturday's contest on the bench. Brandon Lockridge will fill the void in left field and bat eighth.... See More ... See Less -
Padres' Jason Heyward: Sitting against righty
Heyward is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Guardians. Heyward had started in each of the Padres' first four matchups versus right-handed pitching, but he'll take a seat Wednesday even while the Guardians sent righty Ben Lively to the hill. The veteran outfielder has gone 2-for-14 at the dish so far this season, and his ongoing struggles could begin to cost him some playing time.... See More ... See Less -
Padres' Jason Heyward: Sitting against lefty
Heyward is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against Cleveland, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Heyward has gone 1-for-12 through five games this season and will sit Tuesday with southpaw Logan Allen taking the mound for the Guardians. Brandon Lockridge will start in left field and bat eighth.... See More ... See Less -
Padres' Jason Heyward: Getting third straight start
Heyward will start in left field and bat eighth in Sunday's game against Atlanta. After a rough spring in which he hit .143, Heyward's standing atop the depth chart in left field appeared to be shaky, but he's now cracked the lineup in each of the Padres' first three matchups with right-handed starting pitchers. However, Heyward's struggles have continued into the season, as he's yet to record a hit or draw a walk in eight plate appearances. The Padres may give Heyward some more time to get into a rhythm at the plate, but if he can't get going, he'll be at high risk of losing his strong-side platoon role.... See More ... See Less -
Padres' Jason Heyward: Getting competition in LF
Heyward has gone just 3-for-24 with no homers and six strikeouts through 12 games this spring, and it's still unclear how the Padres will approach playing time in left field, per Dennis Lin of The Athletic. When San Diego signed Heyward and Connor Joe on the same day in early February, the expectation was that the pair would form a platoon in left field. However, Heyward's struggles this spring and the impressive play of other outfield options may have shifted that approach. Joe has slashed .333/.487/.500 and appears to be a lock for the roster, though Lin suggests that the Padres may want to sit him against most right-handers. Meanwhile, Gavin Sheets has had a huge spring, batting .318 and tying for first among all players during the exhibition slate with six home runs, and Tirso Ornelas (.827 OPS), Oscar Gonzalez (.904 OPS) and Brandon Lockridge (.826 OPS, six steals) have all made a compelling case for a roster spot as well. San Diego could make room on the roster for at least four of that group, and it helps that both Joe and Sheets can play first base, while the team's playing time at DH also remains up in the air. The Padres may want to deploy the left-handed bat of either Sheets and Ornelas -- assuming they make the roster -- on a frequent basis given their impressive performances during the Cactus League slate.... Padres' Jason Heyward: Signs with Friars
Heyward agreed to terms on a contract with the Padres on Friday, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports. Heyward got off to a rough start with the Dodgers last season, slashing just .208/.289/.393 across 197 plate appearances before being released by the team in late August. He was able to latch on with Houston and ended the regular season on a relatively positive note, going 12-for-55 with four homers and nine RBI over 24 regular-season games. Now in San Diego, the 35-year-old will likely form a platoon in left field with Connor Joe, who also signed a one-year pact with the Padres on Friday.... See More ... See Less -
Astros' Jason Heyward: Idle against lefty
Heyward is out of the lineup for Friday's game against Cleveland. Heyward will dodge a same-hand matchup with southpaw Joey Cantillo, leaving left-field duties to Mauricio Dubon. Heyward is slashing .216/.273/.471 in 55 plate appearances for Houston.... See More ... See Less -
Astros' Jason Heyward: Homers again Tuesday
Heyward went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run in Tuesday's 4-3 win over the Mariners. Heyward delivered a go-ahead blast in the fifth inning, and the Astros held the lead the rest of the way. This was Heyward's second straight game with a homer, and he's gone deep four times over his last 11 games while hitting .310 (9-for-29) in that span. The outfielder has reached the 10-homer mark for the second year in a row after missing it for three consecutive seasons. He's added a .214/.290/.418 slash line with 37 RBI, 33 runs scored and five stolen bases over 85 contests between the Astros and the Dodgers.... See More ... See Less -
Astros' Jason Heyward: Provides lone run in loss
Heyward went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Monday's 6-1 loss to the Mariners. Heyward got the Astros on the board in the eighth inning with his third homer in his last 10 games. In that span, he's gone 8-for-26 (.308) with five RBI. The veteran outfielder is up to a .212/.290/.406 slash line with nine homers, 35 RBI, 32 runs scored and five stolen bases over 246 plate appearances between the Astros and the Dodgers this year. Heyward may see more steady playing time in the short term while Yordan Alvarez is sidelined by a knee sprain, which is expected to keep him out for the rest of this series versus the Mariners.... Astros' Jason Heyward: Idle Saturday
Heyward is out of the lineup for Saturday's game against the Angels. The lefty-hitting Heyward will take a seat Saturday against southpaw Reid Detmers and the Halos. In his last seven games, Heyward is 7-for-20 (.350) with two home runs. Mauricio Dubon will bat ninth and play left field.... See More ... See Less -
Astros' Jason Heyward: Not in lineup Thursday
Heyward is not in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Angels, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports. The left-handed hitting Heyward had started each of the last four contests, but he'll grab a seat for this one as the Angels send southpaw Jose Suarez to the hill. Yordan Alvarez is in left field for Houston.... See More ... See Less -
Astros' Jason Heyward: Picks up fourth consecutive start
Heyward will start in right field and bat seventh in Wednesday's game against the Padres. Heyward has picked up starts in five consecutive matchups with right-handers and should have a relatively clear path to a strong-side platoon role in left field with Ben Gamel (fibula) recently joining Chas McCormick (hand) on the injured list. Since signing with Houston on Aug. 29, Heyward has slashed .235/.278/.441 with two home runs, six RBI, six runs and one stolen base in 16 games.... See More ... See Less -
Astros' Jason Heyward: Does it all in win
Heyward went 3-for-3 with a solo home run, an additional RBI, one stolen base and two total runs scored in Sunday's 6-4 win over the Angels. Heyward opened the scoring with his third-inning homer and added an RBI single an inning later. This was his first multi-hit effort as an Astro, though he's often featured off the bench, going 7-for-26 (.269) over 14 contests since he signed with Houston. Overall, he has a .216/.293/.412 slash line with eight homers, five steals, 34 RBI and 31 runs scored across 77 games between the Astros and the Dodgers. The bulk of Heyward's playing time will come against right-handed pitchers.... See More ... See Less -
Astros' Jason Heyward: Smacks first homer with Houston
Heyward went 1-for-3 with a walk and a two-run homer in Thursday's 6-3 win over the A's. Heyward opened the scoring in the second inning with a two-run shot off Mitch Spence, his first homer in 12 games with the Astros and his seventh of the season. The 35-year-old Heyward has gone just 3-for-21 (.143) since joining Houston while primarily coming off the bench, a role that'll likely continue with Kyle Tucker returning to the outfield Friday. Overall, Heyward's slashing .201/.282./387 with 32 RBI, 29 runs scored and four steals across 220 plate appearances between the Astros and Dodgers this year.... See More ... See Less -
Astros' Jason Heyward: Absent from lineup
Heyward is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game in Cincinnati, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports. Heyward started the first two games after being signed by the Astros but has been in the lineup just once across the last four contests, with two of those coming against righties. The hot-hitting Ben Gamel is in right field Wednesday and looks to currently be higher in the pecking order than Heyward, although both players are likely to see their playing time cut when Kyle Tucker (shin) returns.... Astros' Jason Heyward: Sitting versus righty
Heyward is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Royals. After joining the Astros on Thursday, Heyward made two consecutive starts against right-handed pitching, going 1-for-6 with a double and two RBI between those contests. He was on the bench Saturday against southpaw Cole Ragans and will remain out of the lineup again Sunday while right-hander Alec Marsh toes the rubber for the Royals. Ben Gamel will check in for Heyward in right field.... See More ... See Less -
Astros' Jason Heyward: Officially signs on with Houston
The Astros signed Heyward to a one-year contract Thursday, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports. The deal was reportedly nearing the finish line earlier this week and is now official. Heyward had been cut loose by the Dodgers recently after slashing just .208/.289/.393 with six home runs in 63 games. The veteran should at least offer plus outfield defense and can't be much worse offensively than what Houston has received so far from its corner spots sans Kyle Tucker (shin).... See More ... Jason Heyward: Closing in on deal with Houston
The Astros are close to reaching agreement on a contract with Heyward, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. Heyward will presumably be getting a major-league deal. He was recently released by the Dodgers after slashing .208/.289/.393 with six home runs in 63 games this season. The Astros have had trouble finding steady production from their corner-outfield spots since Kyle Tucker (shin) landed on the injured list in June, so Heyward would likely receive regular chances in right field, at least until Tucker is ready to return from the IL.... Kevin Acee@sdutKevinAcee4H agoPadres recall Connor Joe. Brandon Lockridge has been placed on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain. They went with the experienced pro in Joe. This is going to lead to some sort of interesting outfield alignment against LHP.

AJ Cassavell@AJCassavell4H agoThe Padres recalled Connor Joe, as Brandon Lockridge heads to the IL with a strained left hamstring. No obvious CF on the roster now, but Tyler Wade has plenty of experience there and starts tonight. (Of course, there’s a guy in RF who can cover an awful lot of ground, too.)

AJ Cassavell@AJCassavell1D agoThe Padres have never shut out a team across an entire three-game series. Only one team in MLB history has recorded six shutouts in its first 16 games (CLE in 1966). Both marks are within reach. Michael King has pitched seven scoreless today, and the Padres lead the Rockies 5-0.
