College football scores, rankings, highlights: Michigan hammers Michigan State as USC, Ole Miss escape

No. 4 Michigan started slow in its annual rivalry showdown with Michigan State, but the Wolverines never relented while mauling their way to a 29-7 victory. The win stopped a two-game losing streak for the Wolverines in the series and improved them to 8-0 (5-0 Big Ten) ahead of Tuesday's release of the first College Football Playoff Rankings.

Blake Corum ran for 177 yards and a touchdown on 33 carries and caught a touchdown as well during another standout performance in an increasingly memorable season. Defensively, the Wolverines held the Spartans to seven straight possessions without a score after Michigan State took a 7-3 lead late in the first quarter.

On a day when No. 9 Oklahoma State and No. 10 Wake Forest became highly ranked teams to suffer their second loss, No. 10 USC and No. 15 Ole Miss avoided the same fate with huge offensive performances. Quinshon Judkins ran for 205 yards to pace the Rebels in a 31-28 win at Texas A&M. At 8-1, Ole Miss is enjoying its best start since 1962, while Texas A&M fell to 3-5 with its first four-game losing streak since 2005.

USC outlasted Arizona 45-37 behind a 411-yard passing performance from quarterback Caleb Williams, who totaled five touchdowns through the air. The Trojans allowed 543 yards but survived anyway as they only punted once in their return to action after a bye week.

WVU hanging around

4Q: TCU 31, West Virginia 24

The Frogs are up in the fourth quarter, but not by much. West Virgnia managed to get a stop on first-and-goal from the 1-yard line after stuffing a pair of Quentin Johnston sweeps. The Mountaineers are averaging more than eight yards per pass attempt against a porous TCU secondary, while running back C.J. Donaldson has a pair of scores. All four TCU touchdowns have come from outside the red zone.

Arkansas pulling away

Q4: Arkansas 31, Auburn 13

The Razorbacks are on the brink of breaking a six-game losing streak to the Tigers, as they've pulled away on the Plains as the teams switch ends of the field. Jadon Haselwood had an 11-yard reception and Rashod Dubinion had a 2-yard score late in the frame to build the big lead. The big story here has been the play of running back Raheim "Rocket" Sanders. The SEC's leading rusher has 171 yards on the ground, which puts him over the 1,000-yard mark on the season.

Syracuse rallies

End 3Q: Notre Dame 24, Syracuse 17

Carlos Del Rio Wilson is in for Garrett Shrader at QB for Syracuse after Shrader left the game due to injury, and he brought a bit of a spark to end the third quarter. After struggling to move the football all game, the Orange have scored on consecutive possessions. A 4-yard touchdown run from Sean Tucker with 25 seconds left in the quarter cut it to 24-17 and marks 10 straight points for Syracuse.

Upset Alert

Late 3Q: Penn State 14, Ohio State 13

Alright, this has gone on long enough. Ohio State is officially on upset alert as the Buckeyes struggle to find a groove offensively inside a raucous Beaver Stadium. The Buckeyes have settled for three field goal attempts — one of them missed — and have punted three times. The Penn State defense is playing well, and the Nittany Lions are moving the ball on offense. Click this link for full live coverage. Nittany Lions could have extended the lead to 17-13 earlier in the quarter but they opted to go for it and were stuffed.

Florida State's offense rolling

Early 3Q: Florida State 24, Georgia Tech 10

The Seminoles are ROLLING offensively. Georgia Tech just scored to make it interesting early in the third, but FSU has already piled up 360 total yards as Jordan has thrown for 270 yards with much of the second half still remaining. If FSU holds on here, it will have a case for inclusion in tomorrow's AP poll.

Auburn hanging tough

Half: Arkansas 17, Auburn 13

The Tigers' offense hd been stuck in neutral for the majority of the first half, but they got cranked up in the second quarter on an impressive five-play, 93-yard drive that included a 14-yard reception by running back Tank Bigsby, who followed that up with a 41-yard scamper down the left sideline. Anders Carlson nailed a 24-yard field goal in the closing seconds of the second quarter to keep momentum in Auburn's locker room at the break.

Notre Dame looking good

Half: Notre Dame 21, Syracuse 7

Drew Pyne found Matthew Mayer for a beautiful 37-yard completion into the red zone with 30 seconds left in the half. Aside from a touchdown drive on its second possession of the game, Syracuse has struggled badly on offense. Just five first downs in the first half for the Orange, and most of them came on the one TD drive. The Fighting Irish have been even better than advertised defensively today.

Frogs back up

Half: TCU 28, West Virginia 21

Rather than settling for a tie game at the half, TCU stayed aggressive and managed to counter with a seven-play, 73-yard touchdown drive capped off by a 30-yard Emani Bailey run for a go-ahead touchdown in the first half. The four TCU touchdowns have averaged more than 50 yards per play as quarterback Max Duggan has 234 yards and two touchdowns at the half. West Virginia running back C.J. Donaldson has 84 yards and two touchdowns at the half for the Mountaineers.

Big Play for Penn State

The Nittany Lions needed something to reawaken the home crowd after a rough first quarter. Parker Washington provided it with this big-time catch and run to make it 10-7. The Buckeyes intercepted Sean Clifford twice in the first quarter, but the Nittany Lions have held their own defensively thus far and PSU has some momentum back. Hogs up on the Plains

Early Q2: Arkansas 14, Auburn 3

Razorbacks quarterback KJ Jefferson has two rushing touchdowns -- including a 13-yarder in the second quarter to cap off an 80-yard drive. Auburn has won six straight games over the Hogs, but that streak seems to be in big-time jeopardy early on.

Sweet TD for Oklahoma

Oklahoma pulled off a sneaky fake field goal to take the lead against Iowa State in Ames. Facing fourth-and-goal from the 2-yard line, Oklahoma punter Michael Turk took the hold and tossed it to Oklahoma kicker Zach Schmit. Schmit ran the ball in for a go-ahead touchdown after the offensive line pulled off an outstanding series of blocks. The play was a game-changer in what has been a feisty game at Iowa State.

TCU down early

2Q: West Virginia 14, TCU 7

The Mountaineers are moving the ball with ease against the Horned Frogs early in Morgantown. Quarterback JT Daniels and running back C.J. Donaldson have combined for 159 yards and two touchdowns on 19 touches to pace West Virginia. TCU quarterback Max Duggan has a 71-yard touchdown pass to Taye Barber, but the Horned Frogs have just 10 yards rushing.

Tied at 'Cuse

End 1Q: Syracuse 7, Notre Dame 7

Notre Dame scored on the first play from scrimmage with a 29-yard pick-six from Brandon Joseph. The Northwestern transfer had it from the jump. But credit to the Orange, who bounced back with a touchdown drive as this game heads to the second quarter tied up. Syracuse football facing a third down in its own territory.

Van Dyke out

Miami quarterback Tyler Van Dyke will not play on the road against Virginia in Week 9, according to ESPN. Backup Jake Garcia will start for the Hurricanes and try to end a skid of four losses in the past five games. Garcia threw for 198 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions in relief against Duke a week ago.

Upset Alert

Most of the ranked teams in Week 9 play either incredibly tight games with little betting value or easy opponents. No matter, that just means we'll happily head down the board to the Group of Five ranks where upsets can completely shift the balance of power in a conference race. The Mountain West and Conference USA races could shift with upsets this week. Here are five games to keep an eye on for money line picks.

Big Ten Picks

Just one of the five Big Ten games this weekend are between two ranked teams, but it's the most important week for the conference until the final week of the regular season. With No. 2 Ohio State traveling to No. 13 Penn State and No. 4 Michigan hosting rival Michigan State, both the league's College Football Playoff contenders will be participating in marquee matchups. Both games enjoy showcase spots on national broadcast TV and it marks the last time for either the Buckeyes or Wolverines to make a national statement before they play each other on Nov. 26.

Fornelli's Six Pack

From Tom Fornelli: "I came to a stunning realization this week. While The Six Pack was profitable in Week 8 thanks to hitting on our Boise State upset -- we made a whole 0.1 units! -- it's still a down season overall as we're down 5.69 units. I'm also down on the season in the Cover 3 Podcast's Locks competition."

Viewer's Guide

Loaded with intriguing matchups, the college football slate awaiting fans in Week 9 will define the landscape over the final month of the season and bring the College Football Playoff race into focus as the first set of CFP Rankings looms on Tuesday. It'll be a busy Saturday across the country, so here's a handy viewer's guide to help you navigate the action.

Week 9 storylines

"Ohio State is finally playing somebody. It probably won't matter. The competition to date for the No. 2 Buckeyes has been fairly soft. Notre Dame (No. 5 at the time of kickoff) has been the only ranked challenger. The next six opponents have been trounced by an average of 38.6 points." More here from Dennis Dodd on the Buckeyes and a whole lot more entering Week 9

SEC picks

The SEC football schedule during the final weekend of October provides fans with a massive rivalry matchup, a showdown between two SEC East foes and several must-win games for teams looking to stay in the conference title race. It's also a huge weekend for embattled coaches looking to calm frustrated fanbases that are desperate for wins. Let's take a spin around some of the bigger storylines in the SEC before making picks against the spread for Saturday's action.

Week 9 expert picks

Crunch time is approaching for teams with national championship aspirations with the first College Football Playoff Rankings set for this coming Tuesday. Though there are three major rivalry showdowns involving top-five teams on Saturday, none feature spreads at less than two touchdowns. As such, if upsets occur, they will be significant ones.

Be sure to stick with CBS Sports throughout the day for college football coverage from the opening kickoff onward. Let's take a look at our expert picks for the best games in Week 9.
