Alabama vs. Texas A&M score: Jermaine Burton explodes for No. 11 Tide as Nick Saban edges Jimbo Fisher

No. 11 Alabama took control of the SEC West by rallying for a 26-20 win over Texas A&M with a dominant second-half performance on the road in front of 108,101 fans at Kyle Field. Crimson Tide quarterback Jalen Milroe surpassed 300 yards passing for the first time in his career, repeatedly finding wide receivers Jermaine Burton and Isaiah Bond for chunk gains against an Aggies defense that relapsed into some of the issues which plagued it in a Week 2 loss at Miami.

After shining defensively in SEC wins over Auburn and Arkansas the past two weeks, the Aggies racked up six sacks against Alabama and subdued the Crimson Tide's running game. However, they had no answer for Bond and Burton, both of whom set career highs for yards receiving. Burton led the way with nine grabs for 197 yards and two touchdowns, including a pair of third-quarter scores that flipped Alabama's 17-10 halftime deficit into a 24-17 lead entering the fourth quarter.

The Aggies looked ready to extend their halftime edge early in the third quarter when Bryce Anderson intercepted Milroe, but Alabama freshman safety Caleb Downs came down with an interception of his own two plays later to flip the momentum in the Tide's favor. With the help of a blocked field goal early in the fourth quarter, Alabama maintained the momentum until the Aggies scored their first points of the second half on a field goal with 2:11 remaining.

From there, Alabama recovered an onside kick and ran the clock out to hold on and improve to 5-1 (3-0 SEC). The loss dropped Texas A&M to 4-2 (2-1 SEC), leaving the Aggies in a chase pack behind the Crimson Tide that also includes LSU and Ole Miss.

Jalen Milroe's moment

The much-maligned Milroe finally got a long-awaited moment of glory after a tumultuous beginning to his redshirt sophomore season. While he'd been effective in wins over Ole Miss and Mississippi State the past two weeks, he'd certainly not been heroic after briefly losing the starting job in Week 3 against South Florida.

His performance against Texas A&M qualified as heroic, especially considering the hostile environment and adversity encountered along the way. The Aggies racked up six sacks on Milroe, while Alabama totaled just 54 yards on 18 attempts in the traditional running game with backs Jase McClellan and Roydell Williams. With the offensive line offering little help, Milroe put the game on his right arm, finding Burton for two gains over 40 yards and touchdowns of 15 and 19 yards. He also hit Bond for a 52-yard touchdown on the first play of the second quarter.

The performance marked a major step forward for the Crimson Tide's passing game against a quality opponent, but Alabama's run game and short/intermediate passing game remain works-in-progress. But Milroe's newfound chemistry with Burton and Bond should continue to pay dividends as the Alabama offense finds its way.

Alabama's pass rush fuels the win

Alabama has had one of the SEC's most ferocious pass rushes all year. The Crimson Tide entered Saturday with 17 sacks on the season, which ranked third in the conference. Even so, they took it to new heights against Texas A&M. Alabama finished with five sacks and six tackles for loss.

The pass rush all but secured the game for Saban's squad. Texas A&M got the ball down seven with 6:41 left to play, starting its drive on its own 16-yard line. On the first play from scrimmage, defensive linemen Jaheim Oatis and Tim Keenan III combined to sack Aggies quarterback Max Johnson for a loss of 9 yards.

Johnson took the next snap from the shotgun, dropped back into the Aggies' end zone and immediately came under pressure. As Justin Eboigbe dragged him to the turf, Johnson tried to get rid of the ball and was called for intentional grounding, resulting in a safety. That gave Alabama a two-score, 26-17 lead with less than six minutes to play -- a lead Texas A&M was unable to overcome.

Red zone woes

After the safety left Texas A&M two possessions behind with under six minutes to go, the Aggies forced a quick three-and-out and promptly moved the football into Alabama territory. Max Johnson hit Ainias Smith for a 37-yard gain that was initially ruled a touchdown with 3:16 remaining. It appeared as though the Aggies would be trailing 26-24 with plenty of time and all three timeouts remaining, but a review showed that Smith stepped out of bounds at the 2-yard line. The Aggies then burned more than a minute of precious clock and a key timeout before settling for a field goal to make it 26-20.

The costly sequence exemplified Texas A&M's red zone struggles as the Aggies scored just one touchdown on four trips inside the Crimson Tide's 20-yard line. A&M reached the Alabama 19 on its opening possession before failing to convert a fourth-and-1. It reached Alabama's 5 on its next series and settled for a field goal. By game's end, the Aggies had been to Alabama territory nine times with just 20 points to show for it.

Alabama vs. Texas A&M prediction

These teams combined to score just 44 points last season when Alabama beat Texas A&M 24-20. The Crimson Tide are still figuring things out offensively with Jalen Milroe at QB under first-year coordinator Tommy Rees, and Texas A&M's defense just held Arkansas under 200 total yards. The strength of the Crimson Tide is its defense. Two of the Aggies' four touchdowns came via an interception return and a punt return in last week's win over Arkansas. These factors combine to make the under a wise pick. Pick: Under 49.5

Familial connection

Nice piece on the connection between Max and Jake Johnson at Texas A&M and their familial bond. Give it a watch as we close in on kickoff for this SEC West showdown.

Last year's classic

We already reflected on the 2021 game below, but last year's meeting was also a classic. Fighting through an inefficient offense and ill-performing special teams unit, No. 1 Alabama narrowly topped Texas A&M in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, to keep its perfect season alive and avenge last year's road loss to the Aggies. Leading 24-20 late in the fourth quarter, the Crimson Tide defended at the goal line in the game's final seconds as Aggies quarterback Haynes King's pass from the 2-yard line fell incomplete with time ticking off the clock.

Special teams superstars

Only 18 starting kickers have yet to miss a field goal attempt entering Week 6 action, and Alabama's Will Reichard stands atop that group with an 11 for 11 mark. Crimson Tide punter James Burnip also ranks fourth nationally in average yards per punt at 48.9. With an average net punt of 44.27 yards, Alabama ranks No. 6 nationally. The Crimson Tide have also blocked a punt and a field goal to round out a solid special teams unit. Texas A&M counters with the explosive Ainias Smith, who returned a punt for a touchdown in last week's victory over Arkansas.

Texas A&M could be without Evan Stewart

The Aggies will be squaring off with Alabama on Saturday afternoon in the SEC on CBS Game of the Week -- and could be without one of their biggest weapons. Wide receiver Evan Stewart -- their leading receiver -- was seen wearing a walking boot as he entered the stadium. Stewart has 24 catches for 357 yards and four touchdown catches in four games, and is one of the most talented players in the entire SEC. If Stewart can't go, expect Noah Thomas to get a ton of looks from quarterback Max Johnson.

Don't expect a ton of points

Alabama's offense isn't as explosive as some might be used to this year. The Crimson Tide rank eighth in the SEC in scoring with 32.2 points per game and 11th in total offense (363.2 yards per game). Meanwhile, Texas A&M's offense has shown some improvement under first-year coordinator Bobby Petrino, but the Aggies lost starting quarterback Conner Weigman for the season in a win against Auburn. In backup Max Johnson's first start, the Aggies did score 34 points, but 14 of those came from a pick six and a punt returned for a touchdown. Neither team is great in the red zone offensively. Key game for Milroe

Though he's just a handful of games into his career as a full-time starter, Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe is familiar with Texas A&M. When Bryce Young missed some time last season due to a shoulder injury, Milroe got the start against Texas A&M. He led the Tide to a 24-20 win while throwing for 111 yards and three touchdowns and rushing for 107 yards on 17 carries. But that game came within the friendly confines of Bryant-Denny Stadium. Milroe hasn't experienced anything like Kyle Field yet. His two road starts thus far came against USF and Mississippi State, the latter of which got out of hand early. How he handles the pressure will define Alabama's ability to avoid an upset.

Texas A&M looking for a repeat

The Aggies have just one win in the last decade against the Crimson Tide. Fortunately for Jimbo Fisher and co., that win came two years ago in College Station. Texas A&M was down 38-31 with five minutes left in the fourth quarter, but quarterback Zach Calzada connected with Ainias Smith for a 25-yard touchdown a couple minutes later. Texas A&M forced a quick three-and-out on defense, got the ball on its own 35 and worked its way all the way to Alabama's 11-yard line. From there, Seth Small kicked a game-winning field goal that secured a 41-38 final. Now Texas A&M returns home against the Tide for the first time since that win, hoping for history to repeat itself.

Clash that could define SEC West

Alabama and Texas A&M are the only two SEC West teams with a 2-0 record in conference play. As such, Saturday's game should have a huge bearing on the divisional race. Whichever team wins will be in the driver's seat moving forward, with complete control of their own destiny. The Aggies have never won the West, though they have two second-place finishes under Jimbo Fisher. Their biggest hurdle has always been Alabama, which has claimed the SEC West 11 times with coach Nick Saban at the helm. Oddsmakers have this game as a tossup, but our CBS Sports experts are confident in Alabama holding serve.
