2023 national championship: Georgia, Stetson Bennett overpower TCU for most dominant victory of title game era

LOS ANGELES -- No. 1 Georgia won the 2023 College Football Playoff National Championship in record-setting fashion Monday night, overpowering No. 3 TCU in a gaudy 65-7 victory that marked the most dominant title-game performance in the sport's history. The win, which featured the Bulldogs scoring the most points in any FBS national title game, makes Georgia the first back-to-back national champions of the CFP era and first at all since Alabama in 2011-12.

The Bulldogs (15-0) were balanced on offense, scoring on every possession in the first half and 10 of 12 possessions overall (including the victory formation to end the game). They amassed a whopping 589 yards of offense (averaging 8.2 yards per play), while their defense held the Horned Frogs (13-2) to just 188 yards with three turnovers, five sacks and nine tackles for loss.

Georgia's 58-point margin of the victory also stands as the most in any FBS bowl game.

Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett IV was a shining star with 304 yards and six total touchdowns (four passing, two rushing). He took some individual records with him as he was celebrated by a curtain call early in the fourth quarter. Bennett tied LSU QB Joe Burrow for the most touchdowns responsible (six) in any BCS or CFP national title game.

The domination started immediately as Georgia forced three-and-out on TCU's opening possession only for Bennett to rush for a 21-yard touchdown on his team's first possession. Three plays later, TCU wide receiver Derius Davis was stripped by Chris Smith, and the Dawgs turned the mistake into quick points with a field goal. The Frogs finally offered a response as QB Max Duggan hooked up with Davis for 60 yards; Duggan ran in a touchdown to cut TCU's deficit to 10-7 and provide some belief that the game would be less lopsided than it appeared in the first quarter.

However, what followed before halftime -- from that 10-7 score onward -- was one punt and two interceptions for TCU resulting in four consecutive touchdown drives for Georgia. In less than 20 minutes of game time, a 3-point deficit between two of college football's top teams turned into a 38-7 rout heading into the locker rooms.

The second half was a slow march to crowning the kings of college football on the game's biggest stage. Georgia extended its lead to 52-7 by the end of the third quarter and quickly went ahead 65-7 with two early fourth-quarter touchdowns.

Beyond Bennett's curtain call, Bulldogs coach Kirby Smart executed similar send-offs via called timeouts for numerous other stars, many of whom are headed into the 2023 NFL Draft after the game.

Winning the title in such dominant fashion, Georgia has opened up all of the discussions regarding a new dynasty in college football and brought to the surface comparisons between Smart and his mentor, Alabama coach Nick Saban. It is Saban with more national championships (seven) than Smart (two), but Georgia has won 29 of its last 30 games and stands 72-10 since the start of the 2017 season with three SEC titles and five SEC East division crowns.

As it was after the 2021 season, Smart's Dawgs end 2022 atop the college football world; Monday's dominant performance in is only a reminder how much work has to be done for the rest of the sport to catch up with Georgia.

TCU RB Kendre Miller limited in warm ups

TCU star running back Kendre Miller was on the field with the team as the Horned Frogs came out for their first warm-up (no pads). Miller, however, did not participate in all of the same activities as the running backs or the rest of the team, opting not to stress the injured knee that has him officially "questionable" for the game. He'll likely now get around round of evaluation prior to the team throwing on pads, but his status -- or rather, his potential impact -- is not looking great for TCU.

Georgia's strong starts have been key

Georgia has outscored its opponents 122-30 in the first quarter this season, and has allowed just 55 first quarter points in the last 29 games. That's allowed the Bulldogs to control the game early and adjust as needed, but clearly was not the case in the semifinal against Ohio Sate. In that game, a 42-41 win, the Bulldogs led for just 1:49 of game time, which is far cry from the way things have played out for most of the season.

LT and Matthew Stafford in the house

The honorary captains the College Football Playoff National Championship Game will be LaDanian Tomlinson for TCU and Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford, who gets to play host for all his fellow Bulldogs who are making the trip to LA. They'll be a part of the coin toss with the captains from TCU (#1 Quentin Johnson, WR; #13 Dee Winters, SLB; #79 Steve Avila, OG; #98 Dylan Horton, DE) and Georgia (#4 Nolan Smith, OLB #13 Stetson Bennett, QB; #29 Chris Smith, SS; #63 Sedrick Van Pran, C)

Lower seed success

The lower seed in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game has a 6-2 record. The lower seed won in the first five years of the format -- No. 4 Ohio State, No. 2 Alabama, No. 2 Clemson, No. 4 Alabama and No. 2 Clemson -- before the No. 1 seed won in both 2019 (LSU) and 2020 (Alabama). When Georgia won the title last year, the Bulldogs were not only the lower seed but became the first No. 3 seed to win the College Football Playoff.

TCU looking to shake up the status quo at No. 1

If TCU can pull off the upset against Georgia, it will disrupt what has been a stranglehold on the No. 1 spot in the AP poll by less than a handful of teams. Since Ohio State was ranked No. 1 in the AP poll of Nov. 1, 2015, only four schools have occupied the top spot in the 126 polls since: Alabama (74 times), Clemson (23), Georgia (21) and LSU (8). This fall, Alabama was on top the first two polls, then UGA for three before 'Bama one more time; UGA took over the top spot in Week 7 and held the position the final eight polls. A victory against Georgia would certainly launch TCU to the top spot, ending this streak of Southeastern dominance when it comes to being No. 1.

Injury updates

There are a couple key injuries we've got our eye on as the players emerge for early warm-ups. Keep your eyes peeled for the latest on Georgia tight end Darnell Washington as well as TCU running back Kendre Miller. Both players were injured in their respective College Football Playoff victories and have been deemed more of less "questionable" throughout the week leading up to Monday night's game.

Open air stadium bringing cool conditions

SoFi Stadium is an open air stadium with a roof, so while the unusual rain we've got today in Los Angeles today won't impact the playing conditions the cold air is every much of a part of the experience down on the field. It's not "Big Ten game in November" cold, but 54 degrees when it's been raining all day is going to make for a pretty chilly watch.
