Kansas vs. UNC score, takeaways: Jayhawks complete historic comeback to win first NCAA championship since 2008

A meeting of college basketball powers in Monday night's national title game delivered a game for the ages as Kansas rallied from a 16-point deficit to beat North Carolina 72-69 and secure the program's fourth national championship. The Jayhawks' furious rally marked the largest-ever comeback in a national title game, besting Loyola-Chicago's 15-point comeback against Cincinnati from the 1963 title game.

David McCormack scored a critical go-ahead lay-up with 1:21 remaining to put Kansas ahead 70-69. Then, he added another bucket with 22 seconds left to make it a 72-69 edge. North Carolina missed consecutive 3-pointers on the ensuing possession and a look from the top of the key at the buzzer to cement the outcome.

Kansas jumped out to an early 7-0 lead but was outscored 40-18 over the rest of the first half as the Tar Heels dominated the offensive glass for an 18-2 edge in second-chance points entering the break. But whatever coach Bill Self told the Jayhawks at halftime worked wonders as KU came bursting out of the locker room with 31-10 spurt.

McCormack finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds and was particularly clutch late while doing battle with injured UNC big man Armando Bacot. The Tar Heels' junior center was playing on a twisted ankle that he re-injured while maneuvering for a potential go-ahead bucket in the final minute. But he got the best of McCormack in the first half before McCormack came up with key plays late in an epic finish.

Here are the takeaways from a classic national title game on Monday night in New Orleans.

David McCormack's redemption

When David McCormack hit a jumper less than a minute into the game to give the Jayhawks a 5-0 lead, it seemed like he was picking up right where he left off in a semifinal win over Villanova on Saturday. In that 81-65 KU victory, he scored a season-high 25 points. With Bacot hobbled and McCormack riding high off the confidence of Saturday's performance, the early returns suggested the Jayhawks might have an edge on the interior.

Bacot struggled initially, but as the half wore on, UNC's wounded warrior repeatedly got the best of McCormack, who left the game with 4:17 remaining in the first half after picking up his second foul. His exit came amid a 16-0 run for North Carolina, and things did not improve amid McCormack's absence.

But in the second half, the KU big man found his footing. He finished with his 11th double-double of the season, and his two baskets in the final two minutes made the difference. It's been an up-and-down career for McCormack, and that was embodied in Monday's game. Ultimately, it ended on the greatest up as he lifted the Jayhawks to a national title.

Role players emerge

The trio of Remy Martin, Christian Braun and Jalen Wilson combined to shoot 3 of 18 from the floor in the first half for Kansas. In the second half, those same three players combined to make 13 of 18 shots from the field. Wilson tied McCormack for a team-high with 15 points, and Braun added a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Martin, meanwhile, hit all four of his shot attempts in the second half, including a trio of 3-pointers.

While Agbaji and McCormack were arguably the most important players for this Kansas team throughout the season, what set the Jayhawks apart were their role players. In particular, the dynamic play of Braun and Wilson as players with a unique combination of size and versatility made KU a tough matchup all season.

With Agbaji, Martin and McCormack as seniors on this season's team, the display from Braun and Wilson may only be a preview of things to come. While either or both could choose to test the NBA Draft waters, the pair of dynamic playmakers could make Kansas a contender to repeat as national champions if they return next season.

UNC runs out of star power

Bacot put the Tar Heels on his back in the first half but ran out of gas in the second half, going 0 for 6 from the floor after halftime. With 50 seconds remaining, he twisted his injured right ankle again and fell to the floor in agony while making a move toward the basket with the Tar Heels trailing 70-69.

The play was symbolic of how Bacot gave everything he had before hitting a literal breaking point in the game's final minute. With guards RJ Davis and Caleb Love combining to shoot 10 of 41 from the floor, North Carolina simply lacked the firepower it needed in the second half to keep pace with the red-hot Jayhawks.

eeSophomore forward Puff Johnson provided a huge lift off the bench with 11 points, including nine in the second half as he played extended minutes due to Leaky Black's foul trouble. But a UNC squad that got so many clutch buckets from Love, Davis, Brady Manek and Bacot on a memorable run needed just one or two more to get across the finish line.

What a game

Best Final Four ever? What a classic. Kansas wins it 72-69 behind a couple of clutch David McCormack buckets down the stretch. He was a bit of a goat in the first half as Bacot put North Carolina on his back. In the end, he is the hero. Kansas has its fourth-ever national title, and UNC will look back with a lot of regret. A 15 point halftime lead evaporated immediately after halftime. Tar Heels battled down the stretch but didn't have enough in the tank, especially after Bacot re-twisted his ankle.

Reflecting on the first half

As we get to resume play shortly, a couple final reflections on the first half…Kansas went just 3 for 16 from the floor over the final 9:50 of the first half and just 1 of 8 over the final 5:21. It was a 26-7 run for UNC to close the half. It's gut check time for Kansas. The Jayhawks have had a gold-paved path to this point, running into overrated teams and squads besieged by devastating injuries. But there will be nothing easy about digging out of this hole.

Heroic half

Just a legendary half from North Carolina. Hubert Davis tells Tracy Wolfson at halftime that UNC was perturbed by the suggestion it wouldn't be up for this game after the emotional expenditure required to beat Duke on Saturday night. After a slow start, the Tar Heels were the aggressor and just took it to Kansas. KU likes to get out and run, but that's no problem for the Tar Heels either. Agbaji leads KU with 8 points, but he's going to need to go full alpha in the second half and get 12-15 shots if the Jayhawks want to have a chance.

Armando Bacot

Halftime: North Carolina 40, Kansas 25

Go ahead and give that man the MOP award. He just became the first player in NCAA Tournament history to record a double-double in six NCAA Tournament games. He's not 100%, but he's vastly better than McCormack or whatever else KU has to throw at him. He closes the half with 12 points and 10 rebounds on a bum ankle.

Unbelievable

Where has Ochai Agbaji gone? It seems like he's just about disappeared since hitting a 3-pointer on the first possession. Jayhawks are getting very little from Agbaji and Remy Martin and paying dearly for it with David McCormack also proving ineffective. It's 38-22 UNC after KU once lead 7-0. Bacot is nearing a double-double for the half.

Kansas goes small

The Jayhawks are going small with David McCormack at 2 fouls and Mitch Lightfoot at 3. It's worth a shot to go small and wear out the Tar Heels anyway. Puff Johnson has played four minutes so far, and that's all UNC has gotten from its bench. Going small also forces Bacot out to the perimeter more which Self highlighted as a point of emphasis during his in-game interview. 32-22 UNC with Jalen Wilson at the FT line coming out of the u4 timeout.

Bad McCormack

Unfortunately for KU, it's been bad David McCormack whose shown up so far. He may be an even bigger wild card than Remy Martin in terms of performance fluctuation. Had a couple nice offensive moves early but has looked passive on the boards and just committed a terrible foul on a jump shooter. Tar Heels now up 31-22 with 4:17 left in the half.

Brady Manek!

Wow, how does that guy ever get open? Manek just drilled consecutive wide open 3s to put UNC ahead 28-22. KU takes a timeout with 5:05 left in the half to stop the bleeding. Manek has already taken a couple of shot in this game. But his vision must be fine because he just keeps drilling big outside shots for this team.

UNC momentum

Since the 7-0 start for Kansas, UNC has outscored the Jayhawks 22-11. Now 22-18 Tar Heels at the u8 timeout. It's a 14-0 edge in second-chance points, thanks in part to RJ Davis who has a couple of offensive boards. He's just 6-0, but heart is more important than height in a moment like this. KU is just 1 for its last 8 from the floor.

Bank is open

Remy Martin is the ultimate agent of chaos, and he just proved it by banking in a 3-pointer. That's just the type of player he is: he makes things happen. 181-8 as UNC answers back with a couple of buckets from Davis and Love. Knock on wood, but the Tar Heels are doing a nice job staying out of foul trouble for a game of this pace and physicality.

Back and forth

The first half has its stride as the early jitters seems to be gone and both teams are playing good ball. UNC briefly took the lead on a Bacot and-1. But it's 15-12 Kansas at the u12 timeout. Tar Heels just 4 of 17 from the floor but have a 10-0 edge in second-chance. Bill Self will not be happy about that, especially considering that Bacot is not 100%

Here comes Remy Martin

The game's ultimate wild card has entered the fray. Arizona State transfer point guard Remy Martin is on the floor for the Jayhawks. He's been quiet in the last couple but has been huge for KU in the postseason after missing much of the Big 12 slate amid a knee injury. Martin and Manek for UNC are two examples of just how impactful the transfer portal has been in college basketball.

First media timeout

Kansas jumped out to a 7-0 lead but has cooled off a bit since. UNC just 1 of 7 from the floor to begin the game. 9-3 Jayhawks at the u16 timeout. David McCormack looks assertive and determined to exploit whatever limitations Armando Bacot may be dealing with due to the ankle injury. UNC is a bit flat but has done a good job to keep KU from totally stealing all the early momentum.

Brady Manek down

Bad sign for the Tar Heels as Brady Manek takes a tumble on a collision. He'll be OK, but UNC can't afford to lose him or get him banged up. 9-3 KU early with Agbaji and McCormack leading the way. Agbaji opened up the scoring with a 3-pointer on the opening possession. UNC went to Bacot on its first series and he made a nice move but had the shot blocked as he turned back to his right side. McCormack drills a jumper, then Wilson hits FTs. Was 7-0 Kansas before a Manek 3.

Bacot's health

The game hasn't even started yet and it already feels like the health of Armando Bacot is a huge storyline. He injured the ankle against Duke and rode the adrenaline to the finish. But he's been shown moving gingerly throughout warmups. Bad news for the Tar Heels, who have very little front court depth. Healthy Bacot > McCormack but McCormack >>>> anyone else other than Bacot on UNC's roster in the paint.
