Kansas vs. Texas score, takeaways: No. 9 Jayhawks outlast No. 5 Longhorns, inch closer to top of Big 12 race

No. 9 Kansas worked its way back into the win column on Monday night in a big way with an 88-80 home win over No. 5 Texas. In a key top-10 matchup, Jayhawks cut into the Longhorns' lead in the Big 12 regular-season race and sit one game off the pace with a little over a month until Selection Sunday.

Kansas had lost four of its last five games in conference play following a 15-point blowout loss to Iowa State on Saturday, but led wire-to-wire in its win over Texas in a spirited effort it controlled throughout. The Jayhawks won decisively despite an uncharacteristically off night from Player of the Year contender Jalen Wilson, who battled through foul trouble and finished with a season-low two points.

KU got major production elsewhere with a huge night from its backcourt, led by star freshman Gradey Dick and point guard Dajuan Harris, who had 21 and 17 points, respectively. Joseph Yesufu came off the bench to add a season-high 14 points, and Kevin McCullar and KJ Adams both finished in double figures.

Texas has been one of the best Big 12 teams on the road this season with wins over Kansas State, West Virginia, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State all away from Austin, but it could not quite close the deal against a desperate Kansas team despite repeated second-half pushes. That wasn't for lack of effort, though. Marcus Carr's 22-point second half (and 29 total points) on multiple occasions pushed KU's lead to uncomfortable margins.

Kansas improves to 18-2 all-time vs. Texas in games played in Allen Fieldhouse. The reigning national champions are now 19-5 overall (7-4 Big 12).

1. Texas remains on the top line

Kansas moved up to a No. 1 seed in Jerry Palm's updated bracket last week after taking down Kansas State and maintained its status as a No. 1 seed even after losing this weekend at Iowa State. Texas is receiving grace from Mr. Palm, too, and remain a No. 1 seed in his bracket despite the loss to the Jayhawks. The Longhorns have the second-most Quadrant 1 wins behind Purdue and Kansas, and a bullet-proof résumé should have them headed for their highest NCAA Tournament seed since earning a No. 2 seed in 2008.

2. Desperate Kansas gets needed win

Kansas would have been inching towards a dark place had it lost to Texas at home after getting blown out by Iowa State over the weekend. Losing four of the last five Big 12 games was a rarity for coach Bill Self, and with March right around the corner, it would have been fair to wonder about the direction the Jayhawks were headed. Now back in the win column, however, KU gets not only a much-needed win, but a momentum-builder that can help propel it to the finish line as it defends its title and looks to come from behind to win the Big 12.

3. Jayhawks flex their depth

On a night when Jalen Wilson scored just two points — his lowest of the season and tied for the lowest scoring output in a game since Jan. 4 of last year — Kansas cruised to a relatively sweat-free win thanks to its depth. Five different players scored in double figures with Dajuan Harris stepping up as both a scorer and facilitator. Gradey Dick and Joseph Yesufu also turned in 10-point second halves each to will the Jayhawks to a win.

FINAL: No. 9 Kansas 88, No. 5 Texas 80

Kansas leads wire-to-wire in a necessary bounceback after falling in four of its last five Big 12 outings.

The win cuts Texas' lead in the Big 12 to just a half-game over Iowa State and a full game over Kansas. TCU and Baylor now 1.5 games back.

Kansas won decisively despite getting a season-low 2 points from Player of the Year candidate Jalen Wilson thanks to a huge 21 point outing from Gradey Dick. Joseph Yesufu was big off the bench with 10 second-half points, and Dajuan Harris played one of the best games of the season for him, as he finished with 17 points and 5 assists.

Texas guard Marcus Carr finished with 29 points and had a huge 22-point second half, and Timmy Allen added 18 points, but the Longhorns committed 15 turnovers, gave up a ton of fast-break points and could never quite give KU enough firepower down the stretch.

Impressed early tonight with what I've seen from Dajuan Harris. KU's lead guard has had some streaky play of late but a runner in the lane there helps key what has been an 13-2 KU run the last five minutes to open up a 25-14 lead. He's up to six points and three assists already.

Texas hanging tight early

Good start for No. 9 Kansas after a sluggish start over the weekend in Ames vs. Iowa State. Jayhawks at home look much more confident in this one out of the gate and built their lead to as many as six in the opening minutes. Texas hanging tight, though, with Sir'Jabari Rice continuing his recent hot streak. He has eight points in the opening minutes and Texas is keeping it close.

Betting trends

No surprise that Kansas is favored inside Allen Fieldhouse but as just 3.5-point favorites, little surprised to see this via Caesars Sportsbook: 68% of the public is in on KU -4.5 tonight.

93% of the public who is betting on the moneyline has KU (-180) after it opened at KU -165. Definitely some value there with Texas at +152 after Texas moneyline opened at +140.

Texas' path to Big 12 title

Texas has not won the regular-season Big 12 championship since 2008 -- its third as a program under the Big 12 structure -- but with a one-game lead on Iowa State and a two-game lead on KU, Baylor, Kansas State and TCU, a win tonight would do wonders for its chances to break the drought. Still a very tough schedule remaining because, well, this is the Big 12, but four home games left on the slate and three road games left (one of which is at unranked Texas Tech) makes tonight a chance for Texas to really build a cushion going into the stretch run.

Kansas on historic skid

Entering Monday night, No. 9 Kansas has lost four of its last five conference games, the first time that has ever happened under coach Bill Self. Tough matchup against a Texas team that's been pretty solid on the whole on the road this season with road wins at West Virginia, at Oklahoma State, at Oklahoma and most recently at Kansas State. Longhorns are 7-2 in league play since the calendar flipped to 2023 with its only Big 12 losses coming at Ames and in Stillwater.
