The Pirates recalled Hernandez from Triple-A Indianapolis on Thursday, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Hernandez has been effective during his time in the Pirates bullpen this season, allowing one run with a 4:3 K:BB over 4.2 innings. The 26-year-old will provide manager Derek Shelton with another left-handed relief option.... See More ... See Less

Pirates' Jose Hernandez: Optioned to Indianapolis
The Pirates optioned Hernandez to Triple-A Indianapolis on Wednesday. Hernandez has allowed one earned run across 4.2 innings this season, but he will now return to the minors to free up a spot in Pittsburgh's bullpen. It's unclear who will come up from Triple-A to fill the left-hander's spot, but the team will announce a corresponding move Friday.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Jose Hernandez: Brought back up
Hernandez was recalled Sunday from Triple-A Indianapolis, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Hernandez will be brought up to the Pirates roster with pitcher Ryan Borucki being placed on the 15-day IL with left triceps inflammation. The second-year reliever pitched two games in late March, logging two innings and one save before getting sent down to Triple-A. Though he was called up concurrently with Borucki's injury, Hernandez could keep his spot if able to perform well when called from the bullpen.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Jose Hernandez: Returning to Triple-A
The Pirates optioned Hernandez to Triple-A Indianapolis on Sunday. The left-hander was called up Opening Day and picked up an extra-inning save Thursday, and he also delivered a scoreless frame Saturday. Hernandez will head back to Indianapolis since Roansy Contreras is returning from the paternity list.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Jose Hernandez: Surprises with first career save
Hernandez tossed a scoreless 12th inning to earn his first save in Thursday's Opening Day win over Miami. The lefty reliever had been called up from Triple-A earlier in the day and with closer David Bednar unavailable due to a lingering lat issue, Hernandez took advantage of his opportunity by throwing nine of 11 pitches for strikes in a blemish-free 12th to pick up his first career save. The Pirates are currently missing a couple of bullpen arms to start the season, putting Hernandez in position to help the bullpen prior to a likely return trip to Triple-A once the Bucco bullpen returns to full capacity.... Pirates' Jose Hernandez: Returns to action Friday
Hernandez (calf) was activated from the 15-day injured list Friday. He allowed three runs on two hits and a walk over two-thirds of an inning during Friday's loss to the Angels. Yohan Ramirez was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis to make room for the left-hander on the 26-man roster. Hernandez missed just over a month with a right calf strain, and he allowed home runs to Zach Neto and Taylor Ward to account for the three runs. He also recorded three strikeouts -- a wild pitch allowed Shohei Ohtani to reach base. Hernandez carries a 3.54 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 31:7 K:BB through 28 innings this season while adding three holds, so he's not likely to see a lot of high-leverage work.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Jose Hernandez: Begins rehab assignment
Hernandez (calf) is beginning a rehab assignment Tuesday with Triple-A Indianapolis, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports. Hernandez should be able to return to the Pirates' bullpen by the weekend, after making maybe one or two appearances on the farm. The 25-year-old had posted a strong 2.63 ERA and 28:6 K:BB in 27.1 innings before he landed on the injured list June 18 with a right calf strain.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Jose Hernandez: Bullpen session Saturday
Hernandez (calf) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Saturday, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Hernandez appears on track to return from the 15-day injured list when first eligible next week. Selected away from the Dodgers in the Rule 5 Draft back in December, the 25-year-old left-hander had registered a sharp 2.63 ERA and 28:6 K:BB through 27.1 innings this season with Pittsburgh prior to suffering a minor right calf strain.... Pirates' Jose Hernandez: Heads to IL with hamstring strain
The Pirates placed Hernandez on the 15-day injured list Sunday with a right calf strain, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Hernandez was a Rule 5 draft selection by the Pirates over the winter, and the left-hander has more than held his own with a 2.63 ERA and 1.02 WHIP over 26 appearances and 27.1 innings with the club. He'll be out for at least the next two weeks, however, and Ryan Borucki was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis in the corresponding transaction.... See More ... See Less

Jason Mackey@JMackeyPG2H agoPirates are 1 of only 4 MLB teams with 1 or no players worth 1.0 fWAR or more (Connor Joe, 1.0). CWS, CIN and MIA the others. Also, NL Central has the fewest 1.0+ fWAR players in MLB. Was curious how Pirates stacked up with this stuff and did some research. https://t.co/LZ27zvNz8s

Jason Mackey@JMackeyPG3H agoPirates general manager Ben Cherington spent $30.95 million this offseason to sign/acquire the following six players: Rowdy Tellez, Aroldis Chapman, Marco Gonzales, Martin Perez, Yasmani Grandal and Michael A. Taylor. Their collective fWAR: -0.8.

Alex Stumpf@AlexJStumpf3H agoSource confirms the Pirates are calling up Henry Davis. He had a 1.078 OPS and seven home runs with Indy this past month, with Derek Shelton sharing recently that he had been making progress with his mechanics. @JMackeyPG had it first

Alex Stumpf@AlexJStumpf5H ago“I've got to be an example, even when it's not going good for me." Rowdy Tellez’s best game of the season wasn’t enough to get the Pirates the win Sunday in Toronto, but it could potentially get their first baseman going. https://t.co/btDKHcAuVu

Jason Mackey@JMackeyPG8H agoPirates fall, 5-4. Solid game from Rowdy Tellez: 3 hits, 4 RBI. But they go 3 for 16 and leave 13. Drop 2 of 3 in Toronto. Pirates are 27-32 after 59 G. They were 32-27 after 59 G in '23. Priester: 4.2 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 K, 1 WP

Alex Stumpf@AlexJStumpf8H agoThat's game. Blue Jays 5, Pirates 4. Huge afternoon for Rowdy Tellez, but Quinn Priester was tagged for four runs over 4 2/3 innings with a lot of hard contact. Pirates lose the series. They are 27-32.

Jason Mackey@JMackeyPG9H agoAnother wasted opportunity. Chad Green walks two to lead off the 6th. Connor Joe and Oneil Cruz strike out, the latter on a fastball right down broadway. Ke'Bryan Hayes' laser to left is caught. Pirates have stranded 11 today. They're 2 for 13 w/RISP.
