Urshela went 3-for-5 with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored in Saturday's 8-3 win over the Diamondbacks. Urshela just returned from the injured list Thursday after missing about a month due to a hamstring injury, and these were his first hits since returning, pushing his season average up to a solid .290. The 32-year-old should continue to start most days at third base, though the team will likely find him regular off days to ensure he stays healthy. Matt Vierling is the top option to start at the hot corner when Urshela is on the bench.... See More ... See Less

Tigers' Gio Urshela: Day off Friday
Urshela isn't in the Tigers' lineup for Friday's game against Arizona, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. Urshela has gone 0-for-6 since returning from the injured list Tuesday, and he'll get a chance to clear his head Friday. Matt Vierling will fill the open spot at third base and bat fifth.... Tigers' Gio Urshela: Back from injured list
Urshela (hamstring) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list and is starting at third base Tuesday against the Marlins, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. The 32-year-old landed on the shelf with a strained hamstring April 20, but he's ready to rejoin the Tigers after a three-game rehab assignment, during which he went 5-for-8 with a walk, an RBI and two runs. Prior to the injury, Urshela posted a .298 average through 18 games but didn't provide much pop with just two extra-base hits (both doubles).... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Gio Urshela: Progressing through rehab
Urshela (hamstring) took part in fielding work Saturday and could soon return from the 10-day injured list, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. Urshela has played two games with Triple-A Toledo on his rehab assignment. He started at third base in his most recent appearance Friday and went 1-for-3. Urshela is scheduled to play for Toledo on Sunday as he continues to work his way back from a strained right hamstring he sustained April 19 against the Twins.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Gio Urshela: Begins rehab assignment
Urshela (hamstring) began a rehab assignment at Triple-A Toledo on Thursday. Urshela has been on the injured list since April 20 due to a strained right hamstring, and he has now been given the go-ahead to test his hamstring in a competitive setting. It's unclear how long he will remain in the minors, but it's possible the Tigers wait to activate him until Monday ahead of their upcoming series against the Marlins.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Gio Urshela: May begin rehab assignment this week
Urshela (hamstring) could join Triple-A Toledo this week to begin a rehab assignment, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. Urshela remained with the Tigers for Monday's series opener in Cleveland and was spotted doing some pregame running on the field in what McCosky describes as a potential final test before the third baseman is cleared for a rehab assignment. Before landing on the 10-day injured list April 20, Urshela slashed .298/.310/.333 over 58 plate appearances with the Tigers.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Gio Urshela: Continuing running progression
Urshela (hamstring) will join the Tigers on their upcoming road trip as he continues his running progression, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. Urshela is also going through hitting and defensive drills on a daily basis as he ramps things back up. He's been out for the last 10 days with a right hamstring strain but wouldn't appear far off from a rehab assignment.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Gio Urshela: Straight-line running Tuesday
Urshela (hamstring) did some straight-line running drills Tuesday, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. It's a good sign that he's already doing some running just a few days after landing on the injured list with a right hamstring strain. Urshela will eventually progress to running the bases and could need a short rehab assignment before rejoining the Tigers.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Gio Urshela: Placed on IL
The Tigers placed Urshela on the 10-day injured list Saturday with a right hamstring strain. Urshela suffered the injury while running to first base during Friday's win and had to be removed from the game in the second inning. Matt Vierling will start at third base Saturday and could be in line to do so regularly while Urshela is out, though the newly promoted Buddy Kennedy may also see a few starts.... See More ... Tigers' Gio Urshela: Exits with hamstring injury
Urshela was removed from Friday's game against the Twins due to right hamstring tightness. Urshela appeared to be limping toward the dugout after grounding out in the second inning, and he was replaced at third base by Matt Vierling once the Tigers took the field. The severity of Urshela's injury remains unknown, but Zach McKinstry would likely benefit from additional playing time should the 32-year-old have to miss a few games.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Gio Urshela: On bench for day game
Urshela is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rangers, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. Urshela will see his streak of four consecutive starts come to an end as the Tigers give him a breather for a day game after a night game. Zach McKinstry will step in for Urshela at third base.... Tigers' Gio Urshela: Sitting to begin twin bill
Urshela isn't in the Tigers' lineup for the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Twins. Urshela will get a breather to begin Saturday after going 0-for-3 with a walk and an RBI during Friday's win. His absence will allow Matt Vierling to pick up a start at third base while batting sixth.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Gio Urshela: Takes seat Monday
Urshela is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Pirates, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. Urshela started the previous three games but will take a seat Monday after going 3-for-12 with two doubles and an RBI. Zach McKinstry will step in at the hot corner against Pittsburgh righty Mitch Keller.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Gio Urshela: Sitting for nightcap
Urshela isn't in the Tigers' lineup for the second game of Thursday's doubleheader against the Mets. Urshela went 3-for-5 with two RBI and scored a run during Detroit's win over the Mets in Game 1, and he will get a breather for the second game of Thursday's slate. Andy Ibanez will fill in at the hot corner and bat seventh.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Gio Urshela: On bench for opener
Urshela is absent from the lineup for Thursday's season opener against the White Sox. Tigers manager A.J. Hinch has opted to roll with Andy Ibanez at third base against southpaw Garrett Crochet. Urshela could still be the favorite to see the bulk of the starts at the hot corner, but they might come mostly versus right-handers initially.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Gio Urshela: Not locked in at third base yet
Urshela has yet to lock down the Tigers' third base job, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. Petzold writes that Urshela remains "Plan A" at third base, but he's receiving competition from "Plan B" Matt Vierling, with Zach McKinstry and Andy Ibanez also in the mix but on the periphery. The Tigers might ultimately not settle on an everyday guy at the hot corner, especially since all of the players in the competition are capable of playing multiple positions.... See More ... Tigers' Gio Urshela: Not viewed as platoon bat
Tigers president of baseball operations Scott Harris said Friday that he does not view Urshela as a strict platoon bat, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. Urshela was much better against lefties than righties during an abbreviated sample in 2023, but his career splits are pretty even, as he's posted a .773 OPS versus southpaws and .734 OPS against right-handers. The 32-year-old will be in the mix to receive ample playing time at third base in Detroit and is also capable of filling in at all other infield positions. It's possible the Tigers' addition of Urshela will lead to Matt Vierling spending more time in the outfield.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Gio Urshela: Signs with Detroit
Urshela signed a one-year, $1.5 million contract with the Tigers on Thursday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. Urshela slashed .299/.329/.374 with 24 RBI in 228 plate appearances with the Angels last year before a fractured pelvis put an early end to his season in June. Now fully recovered from his injury, the 32-year-old infielder will join his fourth team in as many years. Though he primarily serves as a third baseman, Urshela has experience at all four infield positions, and he gives Detroit a bat capable of finding success versus left-handed pitchers (.790 OPS since 2021).... Angels' Gio Urshela: Ditches crutches
Urshela (pelvis) said Sunday that he resumed walking without the aid of crutches earlier in the week, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports. Urshela has been out since mid-June with a fractured left pelvis, an injury that the Angels announced will keep him out for the remainder of the season. Fortunately for Urshela, he'll avoid surgery to address the injury, and he said Sunday that he should be in store for a normal offseason. The 31-year-old is set to become a free agent this winter and will likely have to settle for a one-year deal on the open market.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Gio Urshela: Out for season
Urshela doesn't need surgery on his fractured pelvis, but he will miss the remainder of the season, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. Urshela took an awkward tumble while running to first base which forced him out of Thursday's game against Texas. The good news is that he won't need to undergo surgery, so he could be ready for the start of spring training next year, but the book appears to be closed for Urshela this season after he slashed .299/.329/.374 with 24 RBI over 228 plate appearances.... Evan Woodbery@evanwoodbery4H agoA.J. Hinch has used Tigers RHP Alex Faedo aggressively out of the pen. He's logged 28 1/3 innings, considerably more than any other reliever. At that pace, he would throw 100 innings this year (99.78 to be exact).

Evan Woodbery@evanwoodbery5H agoWill be interesting to see if the Tigers make any move today. If they do plan on reinstating Kenta Maeda from the IL on Friday, they could option Matt Manning and bring up an extra bullpen arm or even an extra bench bat for the next four games.
