Tellez went 3-for-4 with a two-RBI double and two RBI singles during Sunday's 5-4 loss to the Blue Jays. Tellez hadn't logged an RBI since May 5 and had driven in three batters since April 4. He bested that total just on Sunday, plating all four of the Pirates' runs and reaching safely in four of his five plate appearances. Prior to Sunday's contest, Tellez had generated four hits in 40 at-bats with one walk.... See More ... See Less

Pirates' Rowdy Tellez: Idle against lefty
Tellez is out of the lineup for Sunday's matchup against Atlanta. With Atlanta bringing southpaw Chris Sale to the mound, the lefty-hitting Tellez will retreat to the bench. Even with the Pirates recently optioning another key left-handed bat in Jack Suwinski to the minors, Tellez doesn't look as though he'll necessarily be locked into a regular role against right-handed pitching, either. He was held out of the starting nine for Saturday's 4-1 win while righty Reynaldo Lopez started for Atlanta.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Rowdy Tellez: Sitting Saturday
Tellez isn't in the Pirates' lineup Saturday against Atlanta, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports. Although the Pirates will be facing a right-hander in Reynaldo Lopez, the left-handed Tellez will step out of the lineup. The 29-year-old is slashing just .175/.242/.225 through 132 plate appearances, so it's possible he's losing his grip on the starting job at first base. Connor Joe will get the nod at first while Edward Olivares starts in right field.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Rowdy Tellez: Takes seat Friday
Tellez is out of the lineup for Friday's game against Atlanta, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports. Tellez will dodge a matchup with southpaw Ray Kerr on Friday. Connor Joe will start at first base and bat third.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Rowdy Tellez: Idle against lefty
Tellez is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Giants, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. The lefty-hitting Tellez will hit the bench for the series finale with southpaw Blake Snell on the hill for San Francisco. Tellez will give way to the right-handed-hitting Connor Joe at first base.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Rowdy Tellez: Sitting versus righty
Tellez is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Giants. It's notable because the Pirates are facing a right-hander in Logan Webb. Tellez has started all but two games versus righties this season, but the two times he wasn't in the lineup have both come over the last week. With a .181/.250/.233 batting line in 44 contests this season, Tellez's time in Pittsburgh might be running out. Connor Joe will handle first base Tuesday.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Rowdy Tellez: Out against southpaw
Tellez isn't in the Pirates' lineup Saturday versus the Cubs. Tellez will take a seat Saturday with lefty Shota Imanaga starting on the mound for Chicago. Connor Joe will start at first base and bat third.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Rowdy Tellez: Sitting against lefty
Tellez is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Brewers. He finds himself on the bench for the second game in a row while the Brewers bring southpaw Robert Gasser to the hill. The lefty-hitting Tellez will give way to the right-handed-hitting Connor Joe at first base.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Rowdy Tellez: Sitting Tuesday
Tellez isn't in the lineup Tuesday versus the Brewers. Tellez has recorded just one hit across his last 22 plate appearances in an eight-game span. In his absence, Connor Joe will start at first base and bat cleanup.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Rowdy Tellez: Sitting against southpaw
Tellez is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Angels. As he usually does, the lefty-hitting Tellez will retreat to the bench while the opposition brings a lefty (Tyler Anderson) to the hill. Connor Joe will replace Tellez at first base and will bat cleanup.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Rowdy Tellez: Sitting versus lefty
Tellez isn't in the Pirates' lineup Tuesday versus Oakland, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports. With left-hander Alex Wood set to start on the mound for the A's, the lefty-hitting Tellez will step out of the lineup. Connor Joe will fill in at first base Tuesday and bat third.... See More ... Pirates' Rowdy Tellez: Struggles continue
Tellez went 0-for-2 with a walk and a run scored Thursday against the Brewers. Tellez hasn't gotten on track at the plate this season and now has only two hits across his last 28 at-bats. He's struck out seven times in that span, and he has only two barrels on 51 batted ball events for the season. The Pirates could ultimately opt to play Connor Joe at first base more regularly if Tellez's struggles continue, and the eventual return of Yasmani Grandal (foot) could also mean that Tellez will lose some plate appearances.... Pirates' Rowdy Tellez: Providing minimal power
Tellez went 0-for-3 Saturday against the Red Sox. Tellez went hitless for the fourth time in his last six starts and is hitting only .207 overall across 65 plate appearances for the season. To make matters worse, he has only one extra-base hit on the campaign, failing to provide pop in the middle of the Pittsburgh lineup. Already sitting against lefties, it's possible that Tellez also starts to sit against righties due to the solid start to the season for Connor Joe, plus the eventual return of Yasmani Grandal (foot).... Pirates' Rowdy Tellez: Out again versus lefty
Tellez is absent from the lineup for Friday's game versus the Phillies. He will yield to Connor Joe at first base with the Phillies sending lefty Cristopher Sanchez to the hill. Tellez is 0-for-8 at the dish against left-handers this season.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Rowdy Tellez: Not in Thursday's lineup
Tellez is absent from the lineup for Thursday's game in Philadelphia. Tellez hasn't always been on the bench against lefties this season, but he will be for this one against southpaw Ranger Suarez. Connor Joe is at first base and in the leadoff spot.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Rowdy Tellez: Reaches base four times
Tellez went 3-for-4 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored Saturday against the Orioles. Tellez started his fourth straight game after beginning the season on the bench regularly due to several matchups against lefties. He tallied his second multi-hit game of the campaign, highlighted by an RBI single in the second inning. Tellez has primarily hit sixth in Pittsburgh's lineup and should remain on the large side of a platoon at first base.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Rowdy Tellez: Crushes three-run homer
Tellez went 1-for-5 with a three-run home run during Sunday's 9-7 victory over the Marlins. Tellez earned the start against Marlins lefty starter Trevor Rogers and struck out three times prior to crushing a go-ahead three-run homer off right-handed reliever Vladimir Gutierrez in the seventh. It was the first homer of the season for Tellez, who started just two of the four games in Miami due to the Marlins' lefty-heavy rotation. The Pirates are scheduled to face a fifth-straight southpaw Monday in MacKenzie Gore of the Nationals, putting Tellez at risk of sitting for the third time in five games. However, Tellez is slated to be the primary first-basemen against righties, and as the Pirates' schedule normalizes, he will be in line for the bulk of the work.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Rowdy Tellez: Sits again versus southpaw
Tellez isn't in the Pirates' lineup for Saturday's game against the Marlins, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Tellez went 0-for-2 on Opening Day and will now miss his second straight start as Pittsburgh faces another left-handed starter in Ryan Weathers. Connor Joe will handle first base and bat in the leadoff spot.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Rowdy Tellez: Sitting out versus lefty
Tellez is not in the lineup for Friday's contest in Miami, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Tellez was in there for the opener against left-hander Jesus Luzardo, but he'll sit for this one with the Marlins starting another southpaw in A.J. Puk. Connor Joe will handle first base.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Rowdy Tellez: Returns to lineup
Tellez (back) will start at first base and bat sixth for the Pirates in Monday's spring contest versus the Phillies, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports. Tellez was scratched from the Grapefruit League lineup over the weekend with a minor back issue, but he's fine. The 29-year-old is slated to be the Pirates' primary first baseman against right-handed pitching this season.... See More ... See Less

Jason Mackey@JMackeyPG4H agoBen Cherington believes the Pirates are a better club than last year. It's tough to understand where he's coming from on that. My column: https://t.co/2HLKjUzfyh

Jason Mackey@JMackeyPG15H agoPirates are 1 of only 4 MLB teams with 1 or no players worth 1.0 fWAR or more (Connor Joe, 1.0). CWS, CIN and MIA the others. Also, NL Central has the fewest 1.0+ fWAR players in MLB. Was curious how Pirates stacked up with this stuff and did some research. https://t.co/LZ27zvNz8s

Jason Mackey@JMackeyPG16H agoPirates general manager Ben Cherington spent $30.95 million this offseason to sign/acquire the following six players: Rowdy Tellez, Aroldis Chapman, Marco Gonzales, Martin Perez, Yasmani Grandal and Michael A. Taylor. Their collective fWAR: -0.8.

Jason Mackey@JMackeyPG21H agoPirates fall, 5-4. Solid game from Rowdy Tellez: 3 hits, 4 RBI. But they go 3 for 16 and leave 13. Drop 2 of 3 in Toronto. Pirates are 27-32 after 59 G. They were 32-27 after 59 G in '23. Priester: 4.2 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 K, 1 WP
