WWE Saturday Night's Main Event live results, recap, grades: Gunther beats Jey Uso to retain world title
Elsewhere on the show, WWE Hall of Famer Shawn Michaels got his hands dirty
Gunther is still your world heavyweight champion. "The Ring General" defeated a game Jey Uso at WWE Saturday's Night Main Event on a card loaded with title matches.
Gunther and Uso headlined Saturday's primetime special. The champion and challenger engaged in a competitive main event that nearly ended in an upset.
Three other matches took place on Saturday, including two title matches. Women's world champion Rhea Ripley and intercontinental champion Bron Breakker defended their titles. A colossal encounter between The Bloodline's Jacob Fatu and Braun Strowman rounded out the card. WWE Hall of Famer Shawn Michaels got surprisingly physical as well.
CBS Sports was with you all night with recaps and highlights of all the action from Frost Bank Center in San Antonio.
Gunther extends his world title reign against a spirited challenger
World Heavyweight Championship -- Gunther def. Jey Uso via pinfall to retain his title. The champion and challenger traded momentum for more than 15 minutes. Uso nearly upset Gunther in the closing sequences. "Main Event" Jey countered a powerbomb into a hurricanrana, hit two consecutive spears and a top rope splash. Gunther endured and folded Uso with a powerbomb to extend his reign as world champion.
Saturday Night's Main Event was a paint-by-numbers show. The outcomes were as expected, including the main event. Gunther and Uso put together a great match but nothing subverted expectations or meaningfully moved stories forward. The show almost felt like a compromise for title matches that didn't make the cut for next week's Royal Rumble pay-per-view. Grade: B+
