Champions League scores: Haaland's Manchester City and Messi's PSG rally; Potter's Chelsea draw, Juventus lose

The UEFA Champions League's Matchday 2 is over after nine games on Wednesday. A slow start to the day saw the matches finish with plenty of attacking quality as 23 goals were scored on the day. Both Manchester City and PSG had to come from behind to win, while the Graham Potter era at Chelsea kicked off with a poor draw at home against Red Bull Salzburg. Also, Real Madrid, Napoli and AC Milan all won, while Juventus were upset at home by a brilliant Benfica.

Here are the final scores of the day and what to know:

Champions League scores

(All times U.S./Eastern)

  • AC Milan 3, Dinamo Zagreb 1
  • Shakhtar Donetsk 1, Celtic 1
  • Chelsea 1, Red Bull Salzburg 1
  • FC Copenhagen 0, Sevilla 0
  • Benfica 2, Juventus 1
  • Paris Saint-Germain 3, Maccabi Haifa 1
  • Manchester City 2, Borussia Dortmund 1
  • Napoli 3, Rangers 0
  • Real Madrid 2, RB Leipzig 1

Haaland proves once again he's from another planet

Erling Haaland is on pace to score 99 goals this season as he continued his incredible form, grabbing the winner against his former club. It was a goal that will probably go down as one of his most iconic when it is all said and done.

After trailing 1-0 thanks to a goal by Jude Bellingham, City rallied and scored twice in the final 10 minutes to win. First, it was John Stones' rocket from outside the box, and then it was Haaland who was on the end of a naughty cross from Joao Cancelo. Haaland lifted his leg above his head while diving in the air and somehow put this ball away. Take a look:

That's just out of this world. We are talking Odell Beckham's catch versus the Dallas Cowboys level of iconic, or Kahwi Leonard's game-winner in the playoffs for the Toronto Raptors against the Philadelphia 76ers. It was an incredible, unreplicable feat by a guy who may end up being the most talented forward in the world.

It's just jaw-dropping levels of athleticism oozing with class.

Maccabi put up a fight vs. PSG

Don't let the score fool you, because PSG had to battle against Maccabi Haifa. It was no cakewalk despite what many expected it to be as  American goalkeeper Josh Cohen held his own, denying Lionel Messi in the box in one instance and stifling Neymar on what could have been a penalty. Kylian Mbappe and Neymar both scored late in the game for what was an inflated score, after Messi scored the equalizer, meaning the trio found the net in the same UCL game for the first time.

In the end, the technical ability and speed were just too much, but the hosts showed some real fight, proving they won't be an easy three points for anybody after taking the lead 24 minutes in.

Hot seat for Allegri at Juventus?

It's going from bad to worse for Max Allegri. The Old Lady continue to struggle, and they now find themselves with two losses after two games in the group stage. Benfica rallied after conceding in the fourth minute to secure three vital points. Juve had just three shots on goal while Benfica managed seven with David Neres scoring the winner on a rebound in the second half.

In the CBS Sports Champions League studio, Arsenal legend and former Juventus player Thierry Henry said it wasn't too soon to talk about Allegri's job status.

"There is definitely a problem at Juve, and they are in crisis," Henry said.

The good news for Juve is they have two winnable games against Maccabi Haifa on the next two matchdays, and that can get them back into contention. But if they don't get six points from those matches, don't be shocked if they have a new manager by Matchday 5.

Potter era starts off with a poor result

Potter's debut with Chelsea did not go as planned. Raheem Sterling scored for the Blues, but a finish by Noah Okafor 15 minutes from time gave the Austrian side a fantastic 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea did have 73% possession and 17 shots, but they put just four of those on frame. While they put 23% of their shots on goal, Salzburg put 75% of theirs (three out of four) and were quite dangerous in their limited chances.

It's going to take time for Potter to get things going as he would like, and the Blues did have some moments, but that was a match where a bit more sharpness would have resulted in three points.

Star-struck moment of the day

Get a load of this. Right before the PSG match, the kids who line up with the players freaked out at the sight of Messi as the Argentine was swarmed and at the end of some really strong hugs.

Noah Okafor!

RB Salzburg found their chance to strike and they didn't miss beating Thiago Silva to put the ball in the back of the net. The Potter honeymoon didn't last long as the match is now level.

Wake up Manchester City

After a disappointing first half, Jude Bellingham's header was on target and Borussia Dortmund are ahead away to Manchester City. Guardiola is responding by bringing on Julian Alvarez, Bernardo Silva and Phil Foden for a full line change. Grealish, Mahrez, and Gundogan have exited for the trio.

Checking in on the goals

Since that Messi goal was scored ... there has only been one via Raheem Sterling. What an astonishing lack of goals, and we'll have to check where this could rank in terms of one of the lowest scoring days. Had it not been for Milan grabbing three today, we would be looking at single-digit goals for nine games.

There goes Chelsea!

It's Raheem Sterling with their first Champions League goal. Salsburg will want that back as it was caused by a defensive error but when Sterling got the ball in space, he knew what to do with it.

A lack of goals early on

There were 16 goals in the seven games played on Tuesday, and surely in these games we could pass that mark, right? Well, it's been a slow start to the afternoon in terms of goals. There were six in the two early games, but as we approach half time there have been just three more in the seven matches currently being played. We are on pace for about a 12-13 goal day, but I have a feeling they are going to start coming as Messi levels for PSG against Maccabi Haifa.

Manchester City can't find an opener yet

They're dominating possession versus Dortmund but a rotated front three isn't creating enough chances for Haaland during the match. Hopefully, Mahrez can find the game as the match is certainly there for the taking.

So far it looks like Raheem Sterling at wing back

Expect the unexpected with Potter but it looks like he's keeping Chelsea in a back three with Sterling as a very advanced wing back. Potter certainly has the Blues playing on the front foot.

Goal Juve! Milik!

The former Napoli man, who joined Juve from Marseille, has gotten off to a great start in his return to Italy! The Old Lady lead 1-0 thanks to his lovely header on a free kick! Leandro Paredes played the ball into the near half of the box, and he does well  to get enough on it and send it to the back post!

Nearly the opener for Napoli!

Zielinski rocket a shot off the left post in the opening minutes! Almost a quick lead for the Italian side at Rangers, but the home side dodge a bullet there! It was poor defending as the Polish international had time to ready his shot, but he misses by a couple inches!

Picks: Man City vs. Dortmund

One matchup to watch: Erling Haaland vs Mats Hummels. One of the most awaited duels since the draw. This week we will see Erling Haaland playing against his former club, the place where he became one of the best strikers of the world. The Norwegian attacker has already scored 12 goals in the first eight matches played in sky blue, including a brace last week against Sevilla. -- Francesco Porzio

Most likely to score a goal: Erling Haaland. An obvious pick, sure, to expect Haaland to score against his former team. But it almost feels like a surefire pick because of his form and the way Borussia Dortmund have played defensively in the early going of the season, with eight goals conceded in six Bundesliga games. Last week in their Champions League debut, BVB won 3-0 against Copenhagen. -- Francesco Porzio

Man of the Match pick: Phil Foden. The England international scored in the UCL opener against Sevilla last week to continue his good run of form to start the season. Look for him to make crucial contributions to his teammates, potentially an assist to his big number nine. His pace and technique will be a real danger for the opponents. -- Francesco Porzio

Match prediction: Manchester City 3, Borussia Dortmund 1. Pep Guardiola's side is among the top candidates to win the competition, and this time around Borussia Dortmund are not as good as they used to be, especially after losing Haaland over the summer. -- Francesco Porzio

Potter's first Chelsea lineup is in and it's attacking

Chelsea starters: Arrizabalaga, James, Azpilicueta, Silva, Cucurella, KKovacic, Jorginho, Mount, Havertz, Aubameyang, Sterling

Reserves: Pulisic, Loftus-Cheek, Benttinelli, Chalobah, Broja, Zakaria, Chillewll, Ziyech, Gallagher, Koulibaly, Chukwuemeka, Fofana

RB Salzburg starters: Kohn, Ulmer, Pavlovic, Bernardo, Dedic, Kjaegaard, Seiwald, Capaldo, Sucic, Okafor, Fernando

Reserves: Manti, Van Der Brempt, Piatkowski, Baidoo, Kameri, Amadu, Koita, Simic, Diarra, Gourna-Doulath, Sesko, Walke

The biggest question is how will the Blues lineup as it seems like a back four but Potter has also used Solly March as a wing back while at Brighton so anything could happen. It will certainly be an interesting watch to see what Potter is able to do in his first match in charge of Chelsea.

Picks: Chelsea vs. Red Bull Salzburg

One matchup to watch: Mateo Kovacic vs. Nicolas Seiwald. For all the focus on a misfiring attack, the reason Chelsea, whose attack was shooting waywardly from Thomas Tuchel's first game in charge to his 100th, fell off a cliff in offensive terms was that their N'Golo Kante-free midfield could not dominate their opponents anymore. Kovacic is their best chance of asserting their will on a Salzburg side who will be at their most dangerous if Chelsea can't pin them back. -- James Benge

Most likely to score a goal: Raheem Sterling. The England international has proven in no small time why he was Tuchel's most wanted summer signing. He may miss more than a few good chances, but what he does as well as anyone else is get into those positions in the first place. No matter how organized the defense is, you'd back him to find a few good positions on current form. -- James Benge

Man of the Match pick: Andreas Ulmer. He may not be the most garlanded name in this team, perhaps because he is 36 and therefore not a perennial presence on the wishlist of top European clubs. But he has proven in recent Champions League campaigns that he can lock down his flank against the toughest threats; if he does so against Reece James, then he will deserve the Man of the Match ball. -- James Benge

That was quick! Milan double their lead but quickly concede!

Alexis Saelemaekers scores! It's 2-0 to Milan, but before you know it, Mislav Orsic has gotten one back for Dinamo! Game on! Just a half an hour to go and still as tight as ever. Limited chances for the visitors, but there is a lifeline now.
