  • Flames' MacKenzie Weegar: Finds twine Monday

Weegar scored a goal on six shots, blocked five shots, logged two hits and added two PIM in Monday's 5-2 loss to the Capitals. Weegar pulled a goal back for the Flames in the third period, but a comeback push never materialized. The 30-year-old defenseman hadn't scored a goal since his Feb. 10 hat trick versus the Islanders, but he had a solid seven helpers over 15 games between goals. He's up to 16 tallies, 40 points, 173 shots on net, 166 blocked shots, 161 hits, 45 PIM and a plus-4 rating over 68 appearances. Weegar's still got a good shot to top his career high of 44 points from 2021-22.

Weegar contributed to the win all night, providing three assists and leading all skaters with 24:30 of ice time. He also added two hits, two shots on goal and a plus-1 rating. He has been rock solid for the Flames since Chris Tanev was traded to the Stars and continues to build on his career year, though Saturday's outing did snap a four-game scoreless slump. With 15 goals and 36 points on the season, he is a player fantasy managers may want to consider rostering if he is available.

  • Flames' MacKenzie Weegar: First career NHL hat trick

Weegar scored three goals Saturday in a 5-2 win over the Islanders. It was his first NHL hat trick, and remarkably, it's the first hat trick by any NHL defender this season. Weegar opened the scoring early in the first with a wrist shot from the right faceoff dot off the rush. His second came late in the second and stood as the winner. Weegar one-timed the puck past Semyon Varlamov after his teammate whiffed on a shot from the low slot. An empty-net goal completed the trick. Weegar has a career-high 15 goals and is on pace for a new personal best of 50 points. Fantasy managers should be wary of Weegar's inflated 11.6 percent shooting percentage, which is more than double his career mark of 5.7. Still, the 30-year-old has been a valuable defender this season even if there is some potential regression coming.
