  • Red Wings' Olli Maatta: Questionable for Sunday

Maatta may not be able to play Sunday versus Buffalo because of an upper-body injury, per Ansar Khan of MLive.com. Maatta took part in Saturday's practice after sitting out Friday's 4-3 loss to the Rangers due to the injury. He has four goals, 17 points and 91 blocked shots in 66 outings this campaign. If Maatta is good to go, Jake Walman might be a healthy scratch versus the Sabres.

  • Red Wings' Olli Maatta: Rare two-goal game

Maatta scored twice Thursday in a 5-3 loss to the Islanders. It was Maatta's third career multi-goal game (March 1, 2018 against the Bruins and March 6, 2014 against the Sharks). His first goal came early in the second frame with a slap shot from the left circle. His second came at 10:49 of third to tie the game 3-3. Maatta fired the biscuit into an open net off a cross-ice pass. He's not a consistent fantasy contributor -- he has just four goals, 17 points, 35 shots and 37 hits in 52 games this season. Nice effort, but it's not likely to be repeated.

  • Red Wings' Olli Maatta: Delivers pair of apples

Maatta supplied two assists in Wednesday's 3-2 overtime win over the Panthers. Maatta pulled through for a Detroit team that still sits seven points behind the second-place Florida in the Atlantic Division. This was the second multi-point game for Maatta in 2023-24, and the blueliner will need to keep it up while Jake Walman tends to an illness that has already kept him off the ice for three consecutive contests.

  • Red Wings' Olli Maatta: Snags helper against former team

Maatta posted an assist in Thursday's 4-3 shootout win over the Kings. Maatta got on the scoresheet against his former team when he set up the first of Robby Fabbri's two goals in the game. With an assist in each of the first two contests in January, Maatta is making a case to stay in the lineup more regularly after occasionally being scratched in the first half of the campaign. The defenseman is at eight points, 16 shots on net, 21 hits, 34 blocked shots and a plus-5 rating through 31 appearances in a third-pairing role.

  • Red Wings' Olli Maatta: Nabs helper Tuesday

Maatta posted an assist, two shots on goal and two blocked shots in Tuesday's 5-3 win over the Sharks. Maatta played in his third straight game since returning from an upper-body injury. The 29-year-old has been rotated in and out of the lineup along with Jeff Petry (who was scratched Tuesday) and Justin Holl. Maatta is up to seven points, 16 shots on net, 33 blocked shots, 20 hits and a plus-6 rating over 30 appearances. Between a fairly quiet offense and a lack of a guaranteed spot in the lineup, he's not a stable fantasy option.

  • Red Wings' Olli Maatta: Should play Friday

Maatta (upper body) should return to the lineup versus Nashville on Friday, Max Bultman of The Athletic reports. Maatta has sat out the last two contests after he was injured versus the Flyers on Dec. 22. Maatta has a goal and five assists in 27 games this season. He should slot into a bottom-four role if he's given the green light against the Predators.

Maatta (upper body) is expected to miss Wednesday's game versus Minnesota, Ted Kulfan of The Detroit News reports. Maatta was also absent for Saturday's 3-2 loss to New Jersey because of the injury. He has a goal and six points in 27 appearances this year. With Maatta unavailable, Jake Walman is likely to remain in the lineup versus the Wild.

  • Red Wings' Olli Maatta: Plucks apple in loss

Maatta notched an assist in Monday's 6-3 loss to the Stars. Maatta had gone eight games without a point, and he sat twice as a healthy scratch in that span. The Red Wings continue to rotate Maatta, Justin Holl and Jeff Petry out of the lineup on occasion. Maatta has five assists, eight shots on goal, 25 blocked shots, 15 hits and a plus-2 rating through 22 appearances this season, and he's unlikely to see more than a third-pairing role when he plays.

  • Red Wings' Olli Maatta: Two helpers in OT loss

Maatta notched two assists in Thursday's 5-4 overtime loss to the Senators. The 29-year-old defenseman benefited from his even-strength partnership with Shayne Gostisbehere, as the latter was busy putting together a three-point effort. It's Maatta's first multi-point performance of the season, and through 13 games he has only four assists without adding much production in secondary categories (15 blocked shots, nine hits, six shots on net, four PIM and an even plus-minus rating.)

  • Red Wings' Olli Maatta: Confirmed in lineup Saturday

Maatta will draw into the lineup Saturday against the Lightning, Ansar Khan of MLive.com reports. The defenseman missed Thursday's 4-3 season-opening loss to the Devils as a healthy scratch. Maatta is a well-rounded blueliner fresh off a solid first season with Detroit. He posted six goals, 17 assists and a career-high 128 blocked shots through 78 contests. Fantasy managers generally require players with power-play utility, and Maatta isn't involved there, but he has a decent two-way profile and is occasionally rendered as a sneaky budget play in daily formats.

  • Red Wings' Olli Maatta: Dishes on two goals in win

Maatta recorded two assists in Tuesday's 5-0 win over the Canadiens. Maatta collected a goal and an assist in the prior contest -- a 5-2 win over the Maple Leafs -- so, suffice it to say, he's having a terrific start to April. Maatta has registered six goals to complement 17 assists through 73 games, which marks his first 20-point campaign since he registered 29 points with the Penguins in 2017-18.

  • Red Wings' Olli Maatta: Two points in win

Maatta tallied a goal and added an assist in Sunday's 5-2 win over the Maple Leafs. Maatta opened the scoring 1:30 into the first period, intercepting a Toronto pass before beating Matt Murray on a breakaway. Maatta would add a second point later in the frame, assisting on a Dylan Larkin tally. The goal was Maatta's first since Feb. 15, a span of 23 games, and his first multi-point effort since Dec. 4. The 28-year-old blueliner is up to 21 points (six goals, 15 assists) with a minus-7 rating in 72 games this season.

  • Red Wings' Olli Maatta: Registers helper in win

Maatta emerged with a secondary assist in Tuesday's 3-1 win over the Capitals. Maatta inked a two-year, $6 million contract extension last Thursday. He's strung together five goals, 13 assists and a plus-6 rating through 52 games, which are strong numbers for a third-pairing defenseman. His shooting percentage (11.9) will be tough to sustain, but that's splitting hairs on an otherwise productive campaign for the Finn.

  • Red Wings' Olli Maatta: Inks contract extension

Maatta signed a two-year, $6 million contract extension Thursday. Maatta has five goals and 17 points in 49 games, his best offensive output since the 2017-18 season with the Penguins, when he had seven goals and 29 points in 82 contests.

  • Red Wings' Olli Maatta: Chips in assist

Maatta secured an assist in Saturday's 5-2 win over the Canucks. Maatta synched up with Filip Hronek, helping his defensive partner to his first goal in the last 21 games. There have been some big moments from Maatta on the way to four goals and 12 assists through 47 games, but he's not a factor on the power play and ranks No. 73 in points among defensemen, meaning you'd have to be in quite the deep league to render him worthy of a roster spot.

  • Red Wings' Olli Maatta: Getting shots to fall

Maatta was credited with a goal in Saturday's 4-3 loss to the Blue Jackets. He was the last Detroit player to touch the puck on an own goal by Columbus' Mathieu Olivier, but they all count. Maatta has four goals on 29 shots, a remarkable 13.8 percent rate which ranks third in league among defensemen who have appeared in at least 25 games. Earning $2.25 million on a one-year deal, Maatta has been a bargain for the Original Six club; he's posted a plus-6 rating, 15 points, 40 hits and 60 blocked shots through 37 contests for a well-rounded profile.

  • Red Wings' Olli Maatta: Provides spark in win

Maatta opened the scoring for the Red Wings in their 7-4 win over the Lightning on Wednesday. An illness sent Maata to injured reserve earlier this month, but he's back in the fold and playing well. The 28-year-old defender notched an assist in Monday's 4-3 loss to the Capitals, only to follow it up with a five-hole tally in the latest contest which helped the Wings snap a six-game losing streak. With three goals, nine assists and a plus-7 rating through 28 games, Maatta is overachieving relative to his third-pairing role.
