  • Josh Mauga: Cut by Kansas City

Mauga was released by the Chiefs on Monday, Terez A. Paylor of The Kansas City Star reports.

The Chiefs announced the release of Mauga on the same day they acquired linebacker Reggie Ragland from the Bills, as the latter presumably made Mauga expendable in Kansas City. There's a good chance he'll latch on elsewhere, considering he offers six seasons of experience.

  • Chiefs' Josh Mauga: Back in game action

Mauga (hip) returned to the field during Friday's preseason game against the 49ers, Blair Kerkhoff of The Kansas City Star reports.

Mauga was sidelined for all of last season with the hip injury, but now returns to the fold to provide the club with some depth at inside linebacker. The 30-year-old inside linebacker was positioned to earn a starting role with the club last season, but his injury opened the door for Ramik Wilson. He will return in a reserve role behind Wilson, but would likely be the next man up if either he or Derrick Johnson suffers an injury.

Mauga's injury doesn't appear to be very serious. Look for him to return to action sooner rather than later.

  • Chiefs' Josh Mauga: Returns to KC

Mauga signed a contract with the Chiefs on Thursday.

The linebacker has spent the past three years with the Chiefs - starting in 30 games from 2014 to 2015, but missed almost all of last season due to a shoulder injury. Now back and healthy, the veteran linebacker offers some insurance in case Derrick Johnson (Achilles) struggles to return to the field. If he can remain healthy throughout training camp, the Mauga could have a prominent role on defense in 2017.

  • Chiefs' Josh Mauga: Sits out of Tuesday's practice

Mauga (groin) sat out of Tuesday's practice, BJ Kissel of Chiefs.com reports.

Mauga was able to participate in a light workout session Monday after straining his groin last Friday, but when the team returned to full pads Tuesday, the veteran linebacker was seen working individually on the side. The minor injury isn't expected to plague Mauga for an extended period of time, as he could return to practice later this week.

  • Chiefs' Josh Mauga: Rejoins practice

Mauga (groin) was spotted wearing shorts, but was out with the team at practice Monday, BJ Kissel of the Chiefs' official site reports.

Mauga required an MRI after suffering a groin strain but appears nearly ready to rejoin practice on a full basis. Barring a major setback of some kind, he should be good to go for the start of the regular season and possible some of the preseason. However, groin strains can linger, so it's something to monitor.

  • Chiefs' Josh Mauga: Posts well-rounded season

Mauga finished the 2015 regular season with 58 tackles (46 solo), one sack and two interceptions.

Playing alongside Derrick Johnson, Mauga made a slight impact of his own on the inside, thous he was no where near his counterpart's 116 tackles. It's possible the Chiefs will look to add some depth on the inside prior to the 2016 campaign, but Mauga is currently in line to retain the starting role.

  • Chiefs' Josh Mauga: Records nine tackles

Mauga notched nine solo tackles in Sunday's win over the Bills.

Mauga was all over the field on Sunday in a sloppy high-scoring affair with the Bills. The sixth-year linebacker tallied his season high in tackles with nine, on a day where the majority of the Chiefs' defenders struggled. Don't expect numbers like this on a regular basis, however, as Mauga only has 36 tackles on the season and holds minimal IDP value compared to others at the position.
