Scott Simonson: Becomes free agent
Simonson was released by the Giants on Monday, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
Simonson was on track to become a free agent at the conclusion of the 2019 season, but because he ended the year on injured reserve, he needed to pass a physical prior to his release, per Dan Duggan of The Athletic. He played in five games in 2019 for New York, catching two passes for 11 yards.

Giants' Scott Simonson: Placed on IR

Simonson being placed on IR will allow the Giants to call up fellow tight end Garrett Dickerson from the practice squad. Simonson finishes the season with 11 yards on two catches.

Simonson wasn't listed on Wednesday's injury report, so he likely either sustained the injury in practice or presented late-arriving symptoms from Week 16's loss to Washington. The depth tight end will now need to fully clear the league's protocol for brain injuries before retaking the field.

Simonson caught his only target for 10 yards in Sunday's 19-14 loss to the Bears.
Simonson was expected to be the Giant's No. 1 tight end with Evan Engram (foot) and Rhett Ellison (concussion) inactive. However, it was rookie Kaden Smith who logged 59 of 60 offensive snaps while Simonson played just 11. Smith was far more productive as well, turning six targets into five catches for 17 yards and a score. It remains to be seen whether Engram or Ellison will return for Week 13's matchup against the Packers.

Simonson is starting for Rhett Ellison (concussion) on Sunday in Chicago, Dan Salomone of the Giants' official site reports.
The Giants are without Ellison and Evan Engram (foot) at tight end, giving Simonson a chance to top the depth chart alongside rookie Kaden Smith this week. After spending the first portion of the season unemployed due to a preseason ankle injury, Simonson will be making his first appearance of the current campaign. In 16 games with the Giants in 2018, Simonson hauled in nine of 14 targets for 86 yards and one touchdown.

Giants' Scott Simonson: Likely to pick up Week 12 start
Simonson is expected to serve as the Giants' starting tight end Sunday against the Bears with both Evan Engram (foot) and Rhett Ellison (concussion) considered unlikely to be available, Tom Rock of Newsday reports.
Kaden Smith acted as the Giants' No. 3 tight end and played 41 of 72 offensive snaps in the team's last game Week 10 against the Jets, but the coaching staff apparently isn't comfortable deploying the rookie as the top option at the position. Smith's inexperience as well as the injuries to Engram and Ellison should open the door for Simonson, who appeared in all 16 games for New York in 2018. Like last season, Simonson said he expects his biggest impact to come as a run blocker, but the 6-foot-5, 255-pounder could draw the occasional short-yardage look. He was targeted 14 times last season, hauling in nine passes for 86 yards and a touchdown.

Simonson signed with the Giants on Tuesday, Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post reports.
Simonson began the season with the Giants but couldn't overcome an ankle injury and was eventually released with a settlement. He's healthy now, though, and the Giants need depth at tight end with Evan Engram dealing with a mid-foot sprain and Rhett Ellison suffering a concussion Sunday. Simonson suited up in 16 games for the Giants last year and hauled in nine passes for 86 yards and a score. His first chance to gear up is Nov. 24 against the Bears.

Primarily known for his run-blocking capabilities, Simonson did wind up starting four games for the Giants in 2018 thanks to a litany of injuries to Evan Engram and Rhett Ellison, recording a career-high nine catches and 86 total yards through 16 games. The 26-year-old won't threaten Engram's status as the team's top tight end, and likely wouldn't challenge Ellison either should the Giants wind up keeping the backup tight end, who has two years left on an untenable four-year, $18 million contract.

The Giants will be without blocking specialist Rhett Ellison (concussion), allowing Simonson to move up a spot in the pecking order at tight end. While Evan Engram will start and handle most of the pass-catching duties at the position, Simonson showed in relief of Ellison last week against the Colts that he won't be a total non-factor in the passing game. In that contest, Simonson played 24 offensive snaps and was targeted three times, reeling in all of them for 16 yards and a touchdown.
