Melvin informed Carolina of his retirement from football Wednesday, Darin Gantt of the Panthers' official site reports.
Melvin played for six different teams after going undrafted out of Northern Illinois in 2013. The 32-year-old cornerback concludes his NFL career with 260 tackles, 41 pass breakups and four interceptions over 74 games.

Melvin (hand) was a full participant in Wednesday's practice, David Newton of ESPN.com reports.
Melvin sat out of the Panthers' Week 10 win over the Cardinals, but he appears healthy and ready to return to action in Week 11. In six appearances this season, the veteran cornerback has played 112 defensive snaps and recorded 12 tackles.

Panthers' Rashaan Melvin: Signed to active roster
The Panthers signed Melvin to their active roster Monday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Melvin was elevated -- for the second time -- to the active roster ahead of Thursday's contest against the Texans, and he did enough to earn a spot on the 53-man roster. The 31-year-old will operate as a depth option while Jaycee Horn (foot) remains sidelined. The Panthers also executed a trade to acquire CJ Henderson, so Melvin's role may decrease slightly when the newcomer gets fully acclimated to Carolina's defensive schemes.

Melvin was elevated from the practice squad for Thursday's Week 3 matchup against Houston, and he recorded four tackles (three solo) while playing 29 defensive snaps.
