Hansbrough signed a reserve/future contract with the Redskins on Thursday, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.
Hansbrough did not sign with a team during the 2018 regular season but now joins Washington's 90-man roster. The 25-year-old has only played five special teams snaps in his NFL career and faces an uphill battle to secure a depth role with the Redskins this offseason.

Hansbrough could be in danger of missing additional time in practice this week if the undisclosed injury lingers, while fellow backup running backs Austin Ekeler (calf) and Justin Jackson (hamstring) are also dealing with issues of their own. The transaction is a strategic move in the event Melvin Gordon is unable to play Sunday against the Raiders. Listed as questionable for the regular-season finale, he likely would cede snaps to Branden Oliver and potentially Hansbrough, if active, because the cast on Austin Ekeler's left hand is containing him to special-teams work at the moment.

Hansbrough simply wasn't good enough to earn his keeps among the Tampa Bay backfield this season. That isn't to say he's not good enough for other teams, however. It'll be interesting to see if he can attract other suitors following his departure from Tampa Bay.

Buccaneers' Russell Hansbrough: Stands out in passing game Thursday
Hansbrough rushed twice for five yards and brought in all four of his targets for 34 yards in Thursday's preseason loss to the Redskins.
Hansbrough saw eight less rushing touches than fifth-round pick Jeremy McNichols, but he did play 28 snaps to McNichols' 20 and also paced the team in receptions. The battle between Hansbrough and McNichols for what would be a fourth running back spot will be settled by Saturday's final roster deadline of 4pm Eastern.

Hansbrough (concussion) rushed four times for 28 yards in Saturday's 13-9 preseason loss to the Browns.
The backup running back notably out-snapped fellow reserve Jeremy McNichols by an 8-2 margin, with the latter getting pulled after missing a blocking assignment that led to a sack. Hansbrough gained all but one of his yards on one run, so his final line was a bit misleading. Nevertheless, he presumably remains in the mix for a spot on the final roster entering the exhibition finale, although Peyton Barber appears to have the inside track if the Bucs opt to keep four backs for the time being.

Hansbrough (concussion) was not active for Thursday's preseason game against the Jaguars, Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Hansbrough is still going through concussion protocol after leaving last Friday's preseason opener against the Bengals with the injury. He'll have to be clear of concussion-like symptoms for at least 24 hours before he can return to the field, with his next opportunity to play being Aug. 26 against the Browns.
