Matt Kalil: Cut by Houston
Kalil was released by the Texans on Sunday, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
Kalil signed a one-year deal with the Texans in March and was expected to begin the season as the starter at left tackle, but the trade acquisition of Laremy Tunsil made Kalil expendable. The 30-year-old looks as though he'll enter the 2019 season as a free agent.

Kalil has missed the past two preseason games due to a minor foot injury but returned to the field Monday. Coach Bill O'Brien has already noted that the veteran will be the starter heading into Week 1.

Texans' Matt Kalil: Gets vote of confidence
Coach Bill O'Brien said Saturday that Kalil (foot) is the team's starting left tackle, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Even though Kalil was held out of Saturday's preseason game, he was still announced as a starter. The bad news for Kalil is that the team has been managing his reps after he missed last season with a knee injury, and backup Roderick Johnson played well in Saturday's game. Expect the team to keep updating Kalil's status as the season inches closer.

Texans' Matt Kalil: Held out against Lions
Kalil suffered a minor foot injury during practice sessions against the Lions last week and was held out of Saturday's preseason game, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Roderick Johnson entered the starting lineup at left tackle with Kalil unavailable. The Texans have been managing the tackle's workload during training camp after he missed all of 2018 with the Panthers due to a knee injury. Kalil said this week that his health is improving, but he has looked rusty in drills, per Wilson.

Kalil missed the entire 2018 season due to a knee injury and has suited up for only 30 of 48 games in the last three years. Now full healthy, the veteran tackle is competing for a starting role along Houston's offensive front, which allowed a league-leading 62 sacks last season.

Texans' Matt Kalil: Still being evaluated
Kalil (knee) is making progress after missing last season due to a knee injury, but Houston's coaches are anxious to see him perform against the Packers next week, John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Kalil has been working for the Texans since March and is in the mix at left tackle along Julien Davenport, but he's missed a lot of football the last three years. Injuries to his hip and knee limited him to 30 of 48 games from 2016 to 2018. Head coach Bill O'Brien may want to see him against opponents, but the coach also understands the tackle gets a good workout against his own team. "We've got a good front," Bill O'Brien said. "When you're blocking (Whitney) Mercilus and (J.J.) Watt, those guys can rush the passer. He (Kalil) works hard. He's athletic and very smart. He's played a lot of football in this league, and he's picked up our offense real well. He's doing a good job." The Texans are looking for significant improvement on the offensive line in 2019; that unit allowed a league-high 62 sacks in 2018.

Kalil (knee) will vie for the starting left tackle job with incumbent Julien Davenport, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Kalil is a former Pro Bowl left tackle who missed all of 2018 due to a knee injury. Competition should be a common theme on the offensive line, not just left tackle, during Houston's offseason training activities and training camp. The Texans' offensive line was below average in pass blocking and last in run blocking, per Pro Football Focus. No quarterback was sacked more or dropped back under pressure more often than Deshaun Watson in 2018, so it's natural to see changes up front. Davenport graded out 97th in run blocking and 94th in pass blocking among tackles.

Kalil has mostly been considered a bust throughout his career at offensive tackle, as the 2012 first-round pick didn't live up to the hype when he signed a $55.5 million contract with the Panthers in 2017. The Texans also re-signed starting right tackle Seantrel Henderson, so Kalil may take over on the left side if he beats out Julie'n Davenport.

Kalil was released by the Panthers on Thursday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Kalil initially joined Carolina prior to the 2017 season on a $55 million contract, but never lived up to his price tag and spent all of last season on injured reserve. The 29-year-old's designation as a post-June 1 cut frees up $7.25 million in cap space for the Panthers, though his release also creates $14.7 million in dead money. The move leaves Daryl Williams (knee) as the top left tackle on the Panthers' roster, though he's spent most of his career on the right side of the line, making the team a strong candidate to address the position in free agency or the 2019 NFL Draft.

Panthers' Matt Kalil: Possible cap casualty
Kalil (knee) could be a cap casualty for the Panthers in the offseason, David Newton of ESPN reports.
Kalil spent the entire 2018 campaign on injured reserve and cutting him with a post-June 1 designation would clear roughly $8 million in cap space for Carolina. However, it would also leave $14.7 million in dead money on the table. It's possible the Panthers won't make a decision on this front until much later in the offseason.

Kalil (knee) is working on the side in practice Thursday and was placed on injured reserve with a designation to return, David Newton of ESPN reports.
Kalil was originally placed on IR at the beginning of the season due to arthroscopic knee surgery and has not seen the field in 2018. The Panthers will now have three weeks to evaluate Kalil and decide whether they will active him when he is eligible following Week 8. If Kalil is activated, it's unclear whether he will assume his starting role at left tackle, considering replacement Chris Clark has filled in admirably.
