Right tackle Erik Pears has not seen much practice time at training camp, and it’s beginning to become an issue for the Bills.

Asked if it was a major concern, head coach Chan Gailey replied: “I’m not ready to put the word major on it, but it’s a concern.”

There are conflicting reports about the exact nature of Pears’ injury. In the spring, the team website reported that he had hernia surgery. At the start of camp Gailey said it was a groin injury.

Whatever it is, Pears aggravated the injury early in camp and has practiced only sparingly since. The 30-year-old was a pleasant surprise in 2011, starting all 16 games at right tackle. He earned a new three-year contract worth a reported $9 million for his efforts.

The longer Pears sits out, the more questions Buffalo will face regarding its depth at tackle. Buffalo currently has a rookie (Cordy Glenn) and second-year pro (Chris Hairston) fighting for the starting left tackle job. Behind them are fifth-round rookie Zebrie Sanders and journeyman Sam Young, who both have struggled at camp.
