Lardarius Webb welcomes the challenge of defending Detroit receiver Calvin Johnson.

With the Ravens facing a regular season gauntlet of quarterbacks -- Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Eli Manning, Philip Rivers, Ben Roethlisberger, and the list goes on -- Webb figures getting a look at Matthew Stafford and Johnson will only help Baltimore prepare for the upcoming season.

"Knowing the schedule we have this year, all the quarterbacks we have this year, this preseason test we're getting can do nothing but help us get better," Webb said.

The only time the Ravens faced Johnson was in a 2009 regular-season game, when Baltimore defeated Detroit 48-3. Johnson was held to four catches for 37 yards. Last week, the Ravens' secondary saw Julio Jones make six catches for 109 yards and a touchdown. There's been some motivation to improve on those numbers this week.

"That's something we always talk about with our defense -- no explosive plays, no big plays," Webb said. "When you come into the first play, you get a little antsy, you want an interception here, you want to make a play. It's all about feeling the game out, feeling the team out. You kinda jump the gun, try to do too much. This game, I think we're going to let it come to us."

CB Smith leaves practice: Cornerback Jimmy Smith left practice Wednesday, walking gingerly off the field with a trainer. Smith appeared to re-injure his back, which he first hurt during practice on Aug. 2.

Smith missed the first preseason game against Atlanta due to the back injury but returned for Saturday's practice. His status for Friday's game against Detroit is unknown.

McKinnie still a backup: It was assumed that left tackle Bryant McKinnie would be back with the first team by now. But with Baltimore being about three weeks into camp, McKinnie is still on the second team.

He moved up to play with the first unit due to some situational shifts when left guard Bobbie Williams sat out of practice the past two days to rest his ankle. Williams returned Wednesday, which moved rookie Kelechi Osemele back to right tackle and Michael Oher over to left tackle.

There's still plenty of time for McKinnie to work his way back to his old spot. But it's a bit of a surprise that McKinnie has stayed where he has for this long.

Upshaw back in: Outside linebacker Courtney Upshaw took some reps in 11-on-11 drills Wednesday, signifying he may see some time against Detroit this Friday. Upshaw sprained his shoulder early in training camp, which caused him to miss the first preseason game against Atlanta.

Poor Jah Reid: Following practice, Webb was asked about a fight that broke out between Gino Gradkowski and Jah Reid vs. the defense. Reid appeared to get the worst of it, with safety Bernard Pollard, cornerback Asa Jackson and others throwing punches at him.

"If you look at that fight, Jah got beat up," Webb said. "I felt kinda bad. I ran from it. No fight for me."

Tucker making case for job: Tucker made all five of his attempts with a long of 52. Cundiff went 3 for 5, missing from 52 and 56. Through training camp, Tucker is 87 for 92 (95 percent). Cundiff is 77 for 94 (82 percent).

They can catch, too? With Wednesday being the last official practice of training camp, Harbaugh gave his team a chance to end practice early. How they got out of practice was that Michael Oher and Terrence Cody had to catch back-to-back punts from over 50 yards from Sam Koch.

Oher tracked his ball and caught it without a problem. Cody seemed to misjudge it a tad but made up for that with an impressive catch. He brought the ball into his body with one hand and secured it with the other.

"I thought both of them would miss it at first," Webb said. "I saw Michael Oher try to catch a pop fly before and it didn't go well. T-Cody, I never thought in a million years he would've caught it but he caught it one-handed. And I can't catch it one-handed. He did a good job."

Injury report: WR David Reed (ACL), LB Josh Bynes (vertebrae), LB Darryl Blackstock (groin), OLB Terrell Suggs (Achilles), WR Torrey Smith (ankle), TE Ed Dickson (shoulder), TE Dennis Pitta (hand), WR Devin Goda (undisclosed) and DT Ryan McBean did not practice Wednesday.
