Jets tackle Jeff Otah has until Tuesday to pass his physical or the trade with the Panthers will be voided by the Jets.

It is an intriguing situation.

The team was aware of Otah's knee issues before the trade and knew that he might not pass the physical, according to sources.

However, although coach Rex Ryan said on Monday he has been "impressed" with RT Wayne Hunter, there is such a lack of confidence within the organization in Hunter's ability to do the job that the team decided it was worth the risk to bring Otah in and see what happened.

If Otah passes the physical, the Jets will see if he can compete with Hunter for the job. If not, the team will look elsewhere. There is no one else currently on the roster who makes the Jets feel completely comfortable.

From Otah's lukewarm comments and comments from those in the organization, hopes are not high that he will pass the physical. The team has handcuffed itself with a few large contracts including WR Santonio Holmes, LB David Harris, CB Antonio Cromartie, CB Darrelle Revis and QB Mark Sanchez, which means there is not a lot of money left to pay for a more desirable player at the tackle position.
