It flew under the radar Sunday because of the drama surrounding the Cowboys and their eventual 20-19 victory over the Bengals, but Rob Ryan did something really stupid in Week 14.

The defensive coordinator went ape-smell on the sidelines, screaming at Cincinnati offensive tackle Andre Smith to the point that he incurred a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. And Dallas head coach Jason Garrett isn't happy about it.

“There were a couple of times we felt like, when their quarterback moved in the pocket, our guys were getting held,” Garrett said, per Carlos Mendez of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. "And as a reaction on the sidelines, guys were emotional about that. One of their players came over and kind of hollered at our sidelines, and Rob hollered back.

"We can’t do that. We have to keep our emotions in check. That was the scenario there about a potential call and their players’ reaction to us, and Rob had a reaction."

Ryan was livid that his defensive players were (allegedly) being held by Smith, and let the former first-round pick know it.

Although, as Garrett explained it, the refs threw the flag on Ryan because he was too far out on the field. They might've been onto something there.

The penalty occurred on the Bengals' first drive of the third quarter and immediately after Andy Dalton was run out of bounds for a loss of one yard on 1st-and-15 from the Cowboys 17.

Cincy would end up getting a 25-yard field goal from Josh Brown after an illegal touching penalty nullified a touchdown, two incompletions and a 12-men-on-the-field penalty from Dallas.

But, uh, those nine yards Ryan was penalized could've been huge: there's no guarantee that Brown misses a 34-yard kick instead of the 25-yarder. But it's a much more difficult kick, and who knows what the Bengals would've done on 2nd-and-16 from the 18-yard line instead of 1st-and-10 from the nine.

Maybe Dallas picks up a sack, knocks Cincy out of field-goal range and we have a different game. The Cowboys won anyway, so Ryan's off the hook, but it's hard to blame Garrett for being furious at an absolutely unnecessary gift to the Bengals at that stage of the game.
