If everyone in the NFL has learned one lesson this week, it's this: Never celebrate a sack against Kansas City.
Raiders linebacker Sio Moore came close to making one of the most boneheaded plays in NFL history on Thursday during Oakland's 24-20 win over the Chiefs.
With under a minute left in game and the Raiders clinging to a 24-20 lead, Moore sacked Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith for a 7-yard loss.
Moore and Khalil Mack then proceeded to celebrate the sack 13 yards behind the line of scrimmage, seemingly not paying attention to the game that was still going on behind them.
Things were so bad that teammate Justin Tuck said he literally would have fought Moore after the game if the Raiders had lost.
The good news for the Raiders though is that they didn't lose because Tuck called a timeout before Smith could get the snap off, a timeout that saved the Raiders from a five-yard defensive offsides penalty.
Moore's celebration was bad, but it could have been worse: it could have cost the Raiders a win, something that happened to Dwayne Rudd and the Browns in 2002.
In a game against the Chiefs, Rudd thought he sacked Trent Green on the final play what Rudd thought was a 39-37 Browns win. To celebrate the win, Rudd tore his helmet off and threw it while he was still on the field.
The only problem is that Rudd didn't actually sack Green. Green somehow pitched the ball to an offensive lineman, meaning that Rudd took his helmet off while the play was still happening.
The Browns were hit with a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, so the Chiefs got to run one more play because a game can't end on a defensive penalty.
Chiefs kicker Morten Anderson would hit a 30-yard field goal with 0:00 showing on the clock to give Kansas City a 40-39 win.
Rudd is still talked about to this day. Tuck's timeout saved Moore from that same lifetime of infamy.
