Eagles vs. Browns score: Olympic hurdler Devon Allen snags first touchdown to lead Philly over Cleveland

Devon Allen's journey to the NFL has been an adventure and it continued when the Olympic sprinter corralled a 55-yard touchdown pass from Reid Sinnett that was the difference in the the Philadelphia Eagles' 21-20 preseason victory over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday.

Allen had just the one catch, but the third-quarter reception was the highlight of a second half that showcased largely third-teamers as the squads participated in joint practices this week. Sinnett connected with Allen for the touchdown, finishing 4 of 9 for 69 yards with the touchdown pass. The Browns had 403 total yards in the game and scored on their first four possessions of the game, but were held scoreless after Cade York missed a 55-yard field goal in the third quarter. Sinnett connected with Allen for the touchdown on the next play to give the Eagles the lead for good.

Philadelphia could not have asked for more from its second-team offense in the first half, grinding out offensive drives to emerge with the halftime lead. Philadelphia had touchdown runs from Boston Scott and Kenny Gainwell, each capping off two drives that took 14 and 17 plays, respectively.

The Eagles took 15:01 off the clock, rushing and throwing for 79 yards each on their first two drives. Scott finished with 10 carries for 33 yards and one catch for 11 yards, while Gainwell had 11 carries for 46 yards and a score. Gardner Minshew finished 14 of 17 for 142 yards as the second-teamers played for both the Eagles and Browns in the opening 30 minutes.

Cleveland received strong quarterback play from Josh Dobbs, fighting for the No. 2 job behind Jacoby Brissett while Deshaun Watson serves his 11-game suspension. Dobbs had a 6-yard touchdown run and a 36-yard run to set up his score. Herb Miller had a fourth-down pass breakup on fourth-and-goal, but missed an opportunity to return the pass deflection 95 yards for the score.

Dobbs finished 10 of 15 for 112 yards with a rushing touchdown while David Bell led the Browns with three catches for 46 yards.

Why trade for a No. 2 running back?

The Eagles had the No. 1 rushing offense in the NFL last season, yet there was some talk they could use more depth at running back -- particularly in the wake of Miles Sanders's injury. Boston Scott and Kenny Gainwell silenced that talk, rushing 21 times for 79 yards and two touchdowns combined.

Scott was impressive on the Eagles' first series -- his lone series of the day. The Eagles ran 14 plays and he touched the ball 11 times, averaging four yards per touch while gaining some tough yards in short yardage situations. Gainwell showcased the explosiveness that has been missing throughout camp, proving he can still fill in a pinch when needed.

Scott and Gainwell are more than reliable complements to Sanders once Week 1 rolls around.

David Bell the No. 3 WR?

David Bell made his preseason debut and finished with three catches for 46 yards, showcasing his excellent route-running ability and reliability to catch the football. There's an open competition for snaps outside of Amari Cooper and Donovan Peoples-Jones , and Cleveland took Bell on Day 2 of the draft for a reason.

Bell has excellent technique and is polished for a rookie. The Browns should be pleased with him in Year 1.

Josh Dobbs states case for No. 2 QB

With Deshaun Watson suspended for 11 games, the Browns will have to make a decision whether to stick with Jacoby Brissett or trade for an established starter. If the Browns roll with Brissett -- and that appears to be the direction they're going -- Dobbs is the front-runner for the No. 2 job.

Dobbs led the offense to scores on their first four possessions, finishing 14 of 20 for 141 yards while rushing for 47 yards and a rushing touchdown. While Dobbs had command of the pocket, he also knew when to take off and make a play with his legs -- showcased on a 36-yard run in the first quarter.

If the Browns have to turn to Dobbs for a game, he demonstrated he can run the offense while adding another dimension to the unit.

Cam Jurgens continues to impress

Cam Jurgens had a great preseason debut filling in for Jason Kelce, and the Eagles second-round pick is continuing to show great things are ahead. On the first play of the game, Boston Scott had a 13-yard run highlighted by Jurgens blocking a Browns defender at the second level -- creating 7vmore yards for Scott. The play was Kelce-esque.

Jurgens created some lanes in the A-gap with his strength and blocking technique, which paced the strong days for Scott and Gainwell. The Eagles will be just fine at center for a long time to come.

An unknown name may earn a roster spot at WR

Deon Cain was a five-star recruit at Clemson, yet hasn't made his mark in the NFL to date. After stints with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Indianapolis Colts, Cain signed with the Eagles practice squad last October. The 2019 sixth-round pick has an excellent shot at a roster spot, especially if the Eagles keep six receivers.

Cain led the Eagles with five catches for 66 yards, showcasing excellent concentration on balls thrown in his direction and tracking the ball well in the air. Gardner Minshew had a good rapport with Cain in the first half Sunday, as Cain had four catches for 59 yards.

Cain's catch on Troy Hill showed he can play in the league. Will the Eagles have him stick around a few more months? Cain's had an impressive summer and has certainly passed Britain Covey on the depth chart.

Devon Allen didn't get the pass interference flag on that Carson Strong 3rd down throw.

Allen was held twice after getting open. That's a shame after a good route by the rookie.

Shaun Bradley had an excellent break on that 4th down stop. The Eagles third team defense has looked much better than they did last week.

Both Eagles QBs have a passer rating over 100. Reid Sinnett and Gardner Minshew have had impressive stints.

Wonder If we'll see Carson Strong?
