The Cowboys won’t report to Oxnard, Calif. until Saturday, but the rookies and selected veterans opened a three-day abbreviated version of training camp at the Valley Ranch facility Wednesday morning. The Cowboys had a rare 8 a.m. practice to beat the Texas heat, which has regularly been in triple digits.

Who’s here: For a change, the Cowboys have all draft picks signed, including first-round CB Morris Claiborne, who inked his four-year deal Monday night. It’s Claiborne’s first practice of the summer after missing all OTAs and mini-camp sessions because of a pre-draft wrist surgery. Other rookies with injuries include DE Tyrone Crawford (quad) and OLB Kyle Wilber (finger). Veteran LB Dan Connor had shoulder surgery that kept him out all summer, making him eligible for this practice. He was one of the few veterans in attendance.

Who’s not: The Cowboys had CB Mike Jenkins in attendance, but on the sideline because of a shoulder injury that hasn’t healed yet. Jenkins was moved to PUP (Physically Unable to Perform) and might not be ready for a few weeks. Guard Mackenzy Bernadeau (hip) and WR Danny Coale (foot) appear to be getting close to returning, but were also put on PUP, meaning they won’t be ready for the start of camp. Also, the Cowboys held Tony Romo out of these workouts, although he is technically eligible to attend. Veteran Kyle Orton took most of the first-team reps.
