Brian Moorman will punt for the Cowboys against the Bears on Monday night, replacing the injured Chris Jones. (US Presswire)

The Dallas Cowboys officially signed punter Brian Moorman, who is expected to play against the Chicago Bears on Monday night, and waived safety Mana Silva to make room for him on the 53-man roster.

Silva's release is interesting, considering the injuries the team is dealing with at his position.

Silva, who has been active for all three games this year and has had to finish the last two games at safety when Barry Church and Gerald Sensabaugh sustained injuries. But the Cowboys signed veteran Eric Frampton this week and obviously prefer his game on both defense and special teams over Silva, who does have practice-squad eligibility.

Moorman, who replaces injured punter Chris Jones, will fulfill Jones role as the holder for Dan Bailey’s field goals and extra points.

While Moorman has 10 years of experience and has made two Pro Bowls, this seems to be a temporary move until Jones can return from a sprained knee injury he suffered while taking a hit against Tampa Bay in Week 3.

Jones nearly had his second punt blocked in two weeks. He finished the game against Tampa Bay, but will be out at least this week. He’s fortunate the Cowboys will be on a bye next week following Monday’s game against the Bears.

Moorman’s career average is 43.9 yards and he was averaging 45.5 yards when he was released this week by the Bills, who opted to go with the younger Shawn Powell, who competed against the veteran in training camp.
