Broncos score late, hold off Chiefs to close in on AFC West crown, No. 1 seed

In a sleepy, defense-focused affair on Christmas evening, the Denver Broncos (13-3) escaped Arrowhead Stadium with a win over the division rival Kansas City Chiefs, strengthening their hold on the No. 1 seed in the AFC in the process. The Broncos, as has become their custom this year, played the game close to the vest and prevailed late with a one-score victory, winning 20-13.

With the victory, the Broncos inched closer to winning the AFC West crown. A loss on Saturday by the Los Angeles Chargers to the Houston Texans will wrap up the division.

Denver controlled the ball for almost two-thirds of the game, winning the time of possession battle by nearly two to one. But the Broncos were still locked in a dead heat with the Chiefs until very late in the game because during the first three quarters they went on three separate drives that took 8-plus minutes off the clock but only converted one of those drives into a touchdown, while the Chiefs converted three different short-field opportunities into scores of their own.

Kansas City's defense bent but did not break for almost the entire evening, forcing the Broncos to matriculate the ball downfield with runs and short passes rather than giving up any explosive plays. It was only through the Broncos going 11 of 18 on their third-down opportunities that they were able to continue moving the ball, and doing so allowed them to get into the red zone on four separate occasions. The first two of those red zone trips ended in field goals, but the final two resulted in touchdowns, which ultimately proved the difference in the game.

The Chiefs' offense, meanwhile, found itself almost entirely unable to move the ball against Denver's impenetrable defense, totaling just 139 yards on 42 plays for a paltry 3.3 yards-per-play average. Third-string quarterback Chris Oladokun was hamstrung by a porous offensive line and depleted skill-position corps, and the Isiah Pacheco and Kareem Hunt-led running game didn't fare much better than did the passing attack.

And still, the Chiefs actually led for an extended stretch of the game, taking a lead with over 12 minutes left in the second quarter and holding it until there were less than two minutes left in the third. They were staked to that lead by a touchdown pass from Oladokun to Brashard Smith, which came shortly after Bo Nix was intercepted by Nick Bolton deep in Broncos territory.

Denver's defense kept the Broncos in the game that entire time, though, before the offense put together just enough late in the game to come away with the victory. Nix ran for one touchdown and threw for another, and with the Chiefs struggling to move the ball all night, that was ultimately all that Denver needed to pull this one out.

FINAL: Broncos 20, Chiefs 13

Denver played with fire for much of this game but ultimately pulled out yet another one-score victory -- the Broncos' 11th such win of the season. Bo Nix threw for a touchdown and ran for another and that was ultimately enough in a game where the Chiefs struggled to move the ball against the Broncos' defense. Denver still has the inside track on the No. 1 seed in the AFC. If the Broncos win next week, they earn the first-round bye.

Broncos take the lead again on Nix TD pass to Harvey

Stop me if you've heard this before, but the Broncos just went on a very long scoring drive. This time, it was 14 plays and 65 yards, taking 6:18 off the clock. It once again ended in the end zone, with Bo Nix finding rookie running back R.J. Harvey for the score to put the Broncos back in the lead.

Chiefs tie the game with a field goal

Harrison Butker knocked the ball through the uprights from 47 yards out after Kansas City drove it 16 yards into his range for a kick. Very surprisingly, we are tied at 13-13 with just 8:03 remaining in the game.

Teams trade punts after Nix score

The Chiefs went three-and-out following that Nix touchdown run. The Broncos had another chance to extend a lead to two scores, but quickly stalled out after picking up one first down. The Chiefs got a really nice punt return from Brashard Smith -- who has their only touchdown today -- to set them up with good field position as they attempt to tie the game or take the lead.

Nix scramble puts Broncos back in the lead

Denver just went on yet another extended drive -- 14 plays, 72 yards, 9 minutes and 47 seconds -- but this one finally ended with a trip to the end zone. It's Bo Nix scrambling through the defense for 9 yards to put his team back in front with a 13-10 advantage.

Chiefs extend their lead with a field goal

After the Oladokun play below, the Chiefs benefitted from a pass interference call to move the ball deep into Denver territory. The Broncos came away with a sack to set the drive back, though, and Kansas City ultimately settled for a field goal. It's a 10-6 game.

Look what I found!

Interesting play from Oladokun here, grabbing the ball off the grass after seemingly knocking it out of his own hands but recovering to make a completion and move the chains.

Broncos settle for another field goal

Denver's second long drive of the game ended without a touchdown yet again. The Broncos are now 0 of 2 in the red zone and trail this game 7-6 at the half. Considering what the Chiefs are dealing with, injury-wise, they have to be absolutely thrilled to be in the lead at the break.

Broncos eating some clock with late-half drive

This has been an incredibly quick first half with a couple of extended drives from the Broncos taking most of the time off the clock. Denver is on another of those drives here, which has already covered 10 plays, 51 yards and 6:23 of game time. The Broncos will have third-and-2 from the 39-yard line coming out of the two-minute warning.

Brashard Smith puts the Chiefs on top

This is the first career touchdown for Smith and for Chris Oladokun. Kansas City takes advantage of the good field position afforded by the interception and takes a surprising 7-3 lead.

Bo Nix PICKED

Pretty incredible play from Kansas City's defense right here. Kristian Fulton makes a diving play on the ball to knock it into the air and then Nick Bolton makes a diving play to come away with the interception. All set up by the pressure to force Nix to scramble to his left on third-and-long.

Chiefs punt on their first possession

Kansas City unsurprisingly went run-heavy on its opening trip with Chris Oladokun under center. The Chiefs got one first down and then stalled out as Oladokun threw incomplete for Xavier Worthy twice.

Broncos take the lead with early field goal

Denver moved quickly and efficiently down the field on its opening drive of the game but ultimately stalled out in the red zone. R.J. Harvey was the main guy on the drive with six total touches, but they only accounted for 25 yards. Bo Nix spread six completions to five different pass-catchers on the drive. Denver ultimately settled for a Wil Lutz kick to take a 3-0 lead halfway through the first.
