Chiefs GM Scott Pioli appeared on the NFL Network's "NFL AM" on Tuesday and was asked about holdout Dwayne Bowe.

"I've been pretty consistent in what I’ve said about it, and I think for everybody involved I have to remain consistent on that, and I want to remain consistent because talking about it really can't help anyone or do anyone any good," Pioli said. "It's a situation where I can say something that's seemingly innocuous and unfortunately it may be taken or spun into something else. Dwayne will be here when Dwayne wants to be here."

Bowe has yet to sign his one-year tender worth about $9.5 million. Since Bowe was franchise-tagged, his options are to either sign the tender or not play.

In his absence, second-year wideout Jon Baldwin has been the talk of training camp with his highlight-reel catches.

Chiefs looking for improved return game: Last season the Chiefs ranked 30th in average starting position following a kickoff at the 20.6 yard line. They haven't had a kickoff returned for a TD in 141 kickoffs over 38 games. 

Pioli tried to address that issue through the draft and with new special teams coach Tom McMahon. They drafted Fresno State WR Devon Wylie and Texas A&M RB Cyrus Gray, who are competing with Dexter McCluster, Javier Arenas and Mikail Baker to return kicks. 

Wylie had two punt returns for scores last season and is competing with Arenas to return punts. Veteran receiver Steve Breaston might also field punts late in games. 

Arenas didn't return a punt for a score last season, but he averaged 12.8 yards per return, which ranked third in the NFL. 

"It's frustrating to know that the average is good, but that is not something we aim for," Arenas said, via the Kansas City Star. "We aim for exceeding all expectations on special teams. The goal is to score as many times as we can. We have to do everything we can to do everything right, and that starts here in training camp."

Chiefs ready for Cardinals: The Chiefs and Cardinals practiced against each other Tuesday. As is usually the case this time of year, the Chiefs were ready to go up against someone else.
