Four of Buffalo’s five starting positions on the offensive line are set in stone for the upcoming season.
Left tackle, however, is another story.
The competition for the starting job on the blind side remains wide open as the Bills press forward in the second week of training camp. Second-year pro Chris Hairston and rookie Cordy Glenn continue to rotate with the starters at left tackle, and it doesn’t appear that the rotation will be changing anytime soon.
Coach Chan Gailey was blunt when asked about the battle.
“Too early,” Gailey said. “I don’t know how that one’s going to end. I don’t even have an inkling, I really don’t.”
Gailey was then asked if he likes what he’s seen so far, or if there’s more work to be done. His response: “Yeah, we’ve got some work to do.”
Even as a rookie, Glenn would appear to have the upper hand. The Bills selected him in the second round to become their tackle of both the present and the future. But Hairston has a year of NFL experience, having started seven games last season.
Both remain a work in progress.
“I feel it will be a great competition,” Hairston said. “It will do nothing but make this team better. I’m a willing participant; I love being out here, I love competition. You’ve got to relish it -- you only get one chance like this, once in a lifetime. They brought in a great player, and I’m just glad to be part of the competition.”
