1. Quarterback -- Not the starter, of course, but the backup can have a big impact on this team and that’s why people will keep a close eye on the battle between veterans Trent Edwards and Mike Kafka for the No. 2 spot. Starter Michael Vick has only played in all 16 games just once in his nine years in the NFL, so the backup QB could decide whether the Eagles make the playoffs or not. Of course, there's also the possibility that the Eagles' No. 2 QB for 2012 isn't on the roster yet, which is even more motivation for Edwards and Kafka to step up.
2. Linebacker -- Specifically the strong side, where rookie Mychal Kendricks has lined up with the first team since the start of the spring minicamps. The coaches obviously want him to win the job and he looks comfortable, but the coaches also know Kendricks is a rookie and training camp is more intense than minicamp. So, veterans Akeem Jordan and Jamar Chaney will be ready to step in if Kendricks falters.
3. Cornerback -- Once again, we’re talking about the reserves; with Asante Samuel in Atlanta, the Eagles starters are set with Nnamdi Asomugha and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. However, in the pass-happy NFL, the nickel CB plays an integral role in any defense and veteran Joselio Hanson will have to hold off the challenges of young guns Curtis Marsh, Brandon Hughes and Brandon Boykin. Hanson especially has to show that he can handle the bigger, more physical receivers in the middle of the field.
