Hill (5-5) earned the win Sunday, allowing one run on four hits and three walks over 6.2 innings against the Cardinals. He struck out six. Hill had given up 11 earned runs over his past two starts, so his quality start Sunday was definitely a step in the right direction. Aside from a few blowup outings, the veteran left-hander has been solid to start his age-43 season and sports a 4.41 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 61:21 K:BB over 12 starts (65.1 innings). Hill will look to make it back-to-back quality starts next time out, which is tentatively scheduled during a three-game weekend set versus the Mets.... See More ... See Less

Pirates' Rich Hill: Crushed in loss
Hill (4-5) allowed six runs on nine hits and a walk over six innings Monday, striking out three and taking a loss against the Giants. Hill was cursed by a disastrous second inning in which he gave up five runs. He allowed a home run for the first time since May 5 and saw his ERA jump to 4.76 through 58.2 frames. Hill has been charged with at least four runs in three of his last five starts, including 11 total runs in his last two appearances. He's currently lined up for a weekend start at home against the Cardinals.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Rich Hill: Punches out nine in loss
Hill (4-4) took the loss Tuesday, allowing five runs on seven hits and two walks over 5.1 innings against the Rangers. He struck out nine. Hill settled down after allowing two runs in the first inning, blanking the Rangers over his next four frames. However, he'd unravel in the sixth, allowing three more runs on three hits and a walk. Overall, Hill's been solid in his age-43 season. He's tallied seven or more strikeouts in five of his 10 starts this year, sporting a 4.27 ERA with a 1.39 WHIP through 52.2 innings.... See More ... Pirates' Rich Hill: Dominant in Detroit
Hill (4-3) earned the win Wednesday, allowing one hit and two walks over six scoreless innings against the Tigers. He struck out seven. Hill allowed just one hit in the contest, a leadoff single to Matt Vierling in the first inning, before retiring 15 of his last 17 batters faced. The 43-year-old Hill has now recorded quality starts in five of his nine outings this year. He lowered his ERA to 3.80 with a 1.35 WHIP and 43:15 K:BB over 47.1 innings.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Rich Hill: Early exit in no-decision
Hill did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks over 3.2 innings against the Rockies. He struck out four. Hill made it through three innings unscathed but ran into trouble in the fourth when the Rockies posted three runs on four hits, a walk and an error. The 43-year-old Hill has failed to make it through six innings in either of his last two starts after logging three quality starts in his previous four outings. The veteran left-hander sports a 4.35 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 36:13 K:BB through his first 41.1 innings this season.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Rich Hill: Stuck with third loss
Hill (3-3) took the loss Friday, giving up four runs on eight hits and two walks over 5.1 innings as the Pirates fell 4-0 to the Blue Jays. He struck out five. The 43-year-old southpaw allowed more than three runs for only the second time in seven starts, but he continues to live dangerously as he served up his eighth homer in only 37.2 innings on the season. Hill will take a 4.54 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 32:11 K:BB into his next outing, which could come at home next week against the Rockies.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Rich Hill: Improves to 3-2
Hill (3-2) earned the win over Washington in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits and no walks while striking out five batters over 6.1 innings. Hill was initially tabbed to start Friday before that contest was postponed due to rain. The 43-year-old wasn't fazed by the adjustment, as he logged a season-high 6.1 innings and tossed an efficient 75 of 103 pitches for a strike. Hill induced 13 whiffs in the outing and didn't walk any batters for just the second time this season. He appears to have located the Fountain of Youth, as he's pitched quite well over his past four starts, allowing just five earned runs and posting a 19:7 K:BB over 23.1 frames.... See More ... Pirates' Rich Hill: Contest postponed Friday
Hill's start was pushed back to Saturday after the Pirates' matchup Friday with the Nationals was postponed, Jessica Camerato of MLB.com reports. Hill will now toe the rubber for one of the Pirates' two contests Saturday during a doubleheader against Washington. The left-hander will look to continue his hot stretch after posting a 2.12 ERA and 1.41 WHIP with 14 strikeouts in 17 innings over his last three outings.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Rich Hill: Registers second victory of season
Hill (2-2) earned the win Saturday, allowing one run on six hits and three walks over five innings against the Reds. He struck out seven. Hill has now allowed just two runs over his last 11 innings pitched. The southpaw is currently the oldest player in the league at 43 years old, but has still been a reliable presence this season. He has allowed three or fewer runs in all but one of his five starts this season, but he gave up seven runs in that exception. That has his ERA at a pedestrian 4.85 through 26 innings.... Pirates' Rich Hill: Earns first win
Hill (1-2) yielded one run on six hits and two walks over six frames en route to claiming the win in Monday's 14-3 victory over the Rockies. He struck out seven in the outing. Hill escaped a bases-loaded jam in the first inning and set the tone for a strong outing Monday. He worked around danger throughout the night and the only damage against him was Kris Bryant's solo homer. Hill's seven strikeouts tied a season best after punching out just one batter over his last 10 frames and he racked up double-digit whiffs for the first time in 2023. Hill is lined up to face the Reds at home this weekend.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Rich Hill: Takes loss Wednesday
Hill (0-2) took the loss Wednesday against Houston, surrendering two earned runs on five hits and two walks across six innings with zero strikeouts. Hill gave up an RBI double to Jose Abreu in the third inning and a solo home run to Corey Julks in the fourth. While Wednesday's start was the best of the year for the 43-year-old lefty, a lack of run support from his offense caused Hill to take his second loss of the young season. Hill now sits on a 7.20 ERA in 2023 and has just one strikeout over his last two starts (10.0 IP), putting a severe cap on his fantasy value beyond the deepest of leagues.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Rich Hill: Serves up three homers
Hill yielded seven runs on eight hits over four frames during Friday's win over the White Sox. He struck out one and did not factor in the decision. Fortunately for Hill, Pittsburgh's offense caught fire and prevented him from taking an ugly loss, but the veteran lefty still gave up three long balls, including two to Luis Robert. Hill has now been tagged for 10 runs and five homers with an 8:3 K:BB through nine frames. He currently lines up for a tough home matchup against Houston next week.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Rich Hill: Takes loss in Cincinnati
Hill (0-1) took the loss Saturday, allowing three runs on three hits and two walks over five innings against the Reds. He struck out seven. Opposing pitcher Nick Lodolo labored in the first inning but ended up outpitching Hill to spoil the veteran's Pirates debut. While the seven strikeouts look okay, Hill only induced six swinging strikes on 84 pitches, and he served up a pair of home runs. The 43-year-old southpaw is now with his 12th different major-league team and looking to ride his trademark curveball to one more winning season. It will be tough on this Pirates team, but he did it last year (8-7) for a last-place Red Sox club.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Rich Hill: Starting in penultimate spring game
Hill (illness) will start Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Twins. Hill was uncertain to make another appearance in the Pirates' spring slate after he was scratched ahead of his scheduled outing Sunday versus Atlanta due to the illness, but the veteran southpaw apparently feels well enough a day later to take the mound. JT Brubaker had been scheduled to start Monday but was scratched due to a forearm issue that will result in him opening the campaign on the 15-day injured list. As a result, Hill is now tentatively lined up to start the Pirates' second game of the regular season Saturday in Cincinnati.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Rich Hill: Scratched due to illness
Hill has been scratched from Sunday's Grapefruit League today against Atlanta due to illness, Justice delos Santos of MLB.com reports. Hill will miss Sunday's start against Atlanta, and Wil Crowe will be on the bump in his place. The left-handed hurler should be fine for the regular season barring something unforeseeable.... Pirates' Rich Hill: Sharp through two spring outings
Hill has allowed one earned run on three hits and two walks while striking out four across five innings of Grapefruit League action. Hill signed a one-year deal with the Pirates over the winter and was brought on in part to mentor the team's young starting staff. However, so long as he is healthy, Hill should be a consistent member of the rotation. He's looked fairly sharp early in camp and will be looking to improve on the 4.27 ERA and 1.30 WHIP that he posted across 124.1 innings in 2022.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Rich Hill: Gets one-year deal from Pirates
Hill signed a one-year, $8 million contract with the Pirates on Tuesday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. Hill is coming off a season with the Red Sox which saw him put up a 4.27 ERA and 1.30 WHIP with 109 strikeouts over 124.1 innings covering 26 starts. He'll turn 43 in March but has remained mostly effective in recent years, albeit with a drop in strikeout rate. Hill will be a candidate to be traded to a contender at the deadline if he's healthy and pitching well.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Rich Hill: Quality start to wrap up 2022
Hill pitched six innings, surrendering three runs (one earned) on three hits and a walk while striking out six in Monday's win over the Rays. He did not factor into the decision. Hill gave up a solo home run to Wander Franco in the top of the first inning before Manuel Margot took him deep for a two-run shot in the bottom of the fourth frame after an error extended the inning. The homers accounted for all the damage against him in the contest and the left-hander notched his second consecutive quality start. Hill will finish his season with a 4.27 ERA and 1.30 WHIP with 109 strikeouts over 124.1 frames in 26 starts.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Rich Hill: Fans nine in six shutout innings
Hill (8-7) earned the win Wednesday, allowing no runs on five hits and one walk with nine strikeouts over six innings against the Orioles. The 42-year-old turned back the clock Wednesday as he fired six masterful innings. His nine punchouts were his second highest of the season, and the quality start his first since Aug. 27. The strong outing lowered Hill's ERA to 4.41 on the season, which would be his highest since 2013. He lines up to face Tampa Bay next week in his final start of the season.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Rich Hill: No-decision Friday
Hill didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 5-4 loss to the Yankees, giving up four runs on five hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out four. The 42-year-old lefty lasted five innings for only the second time in five September outings, and he's coughed up at least four runs in four of those. Hill's 6.75 ERA and 1.72 WHIP on the month suggest he has very little left in the tank right now, and if he does return for a 19th MLB campaign in 2023, it seems highly unlikely he'll be asked to fill a traditional starting role....
