Nick Markakis: Announces retirement
Markakis announced his retirement from baseball Friday, Dan Connolly and David O'Brien of The Athletic report.
Markakis apparently decided to retire shortly after Atlanta was eliminated from the 2020 postseason, but he did not reveal his intentions until now. "I just think it's my time," Markakis said. "My No. 1 decision and my main focus on this is obviously my kids and my family." The 37-year-old Markakis appeared in 2,154 games over his 15 seasons in the big leagues, and he finishes his career hitting .288 with 2,388 hits, 189 home runs, 1,046 RBI, three Gold Gloves and one All-Star appearance.

Braves' Nick Markakis: Expected back Tuesday
The Braves are expected to activate Markakis from the COVID-19 injured list ahead of their two-game set with the Yankees that begins Tuesday, Buster Olney of ESPN reports.
Markakis was placed on the IL last week after informing the team that he may have been in contact with someone who was exposed to the coronavirus, but the veteran is never believed to have tested positive for COVID-19. Assuming he clears all health-related protocols, Markakis should step back into a near-everyday role in the Atlanta outfield. Before being shut down, Markakis was slashing .353/.421/.618 with seven extra-base hits (six doubles, one home run) in 38 plate appearances.

Braves' Nick Markakis: Hitting sixth in return
Markakis (illness) was activated from the injured list and is starting in right field and batting sixth Tuesday against the Yankees.

The move was made out of an "abundance of caution," and Markakis could rejoin the team relatively quickly if he continues to produce negative test results. Cristian Pache, one of the organization's top prospects, was recalled for outfield depth with Ronald Acuna (wrist) also unavailable.
