Wainwright will not make his next scheduled start this weekend in San Diego, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports. Wainwright notched his 200th career victory Monday versus the Brewers and it sounds like the Cardinals want him to go out on a high note. If the retiring right-hander does make another start this year, it would probably be during the final weekend of the regular season at home against the Reds.... See More ... See Less

Cardinals' Adam Wainwright: Earns 200th win
Wainwright (5-11) earned the win Monday, allowing four hits and two walks over seven scoreless innings in the Cardinals' 1-0 victory over the Brewers. He struck out three. Wainwright turned in a vintage performance Monday, blanking Milwaukee over a season-high seven innings en route to earning the 200th win of his 17-year MLB career. The 42-year-old has now won two straight starts, allowing just two runs over 12 innings in that span. Overall, his ERA sits at 7.40 with a 1.90 WHIP and 55:41 K:BB through 21 starts (101 innings) this season. Wainwright will look for win No. 201 in his next outing, currently lined up for this weekend in San Diego.... See More ... See Less -
Cardinals' Adam Wainwright: Bounce-back effort in Baltimore
Wainwright (4-11) earned the win Tuesday, allowing two runs on seven hits and three walks over five innings against Baltimore. He struck out three. Wainwright held the first-place Orioles scoreless until the fifth inning, when the first three batters reached and two runs came around to score in the frame. The 42-year-old veteran left with a lead that would not be relinquished, earning his 199th career win and his first win since June 17. In the 11 outings between wins, Wainwright went 0-10 with a 10.72 ERA, 2.27 WHIP and 25:23 K:BB across 45.1 innings. He currently lines up for a home matchup with the Brewers in his next outing.... Cardinals' Adam Wainwright: Serves up four homers Thursday
Wainwright (3-11) took the loss against Atlanta on Thursday, allowing six runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out four batters over 5.2 innings. Wainwright was working with extra rest having not pitched since Aug. 28, but that didn't help him against Atlanta's potent offense. The veteran was tagged for three runs in the first inning before settling down for three scoreless frames. However, Matt Olson slugged a solo shot in the fifth, and Atlanta struck for two more homers -- including Ronald Acuna's second of the contest -- in the sixth before Wainwright was pulled. It's been a rough campaign for the veteran right-hander, but until Thursday he hadn't surrendered more than two homers in any contest. Wainwright now holds an ugly 8.19 ERA and 1.98 WHIP through 89 innings on the season.... See More ... See Less -
Cardinals' Adam Wainwright: Next start pushed back
Wainwright won't start Sunday against the Pirates, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports. Wainwright reportedly needs a few extra days to recover after his last start Monday against the Padres. Zack Thompson will take Wainwright's place Sunday as the rotation moves up a day, and Wainwright's next start will come Thursday against Atlanta.... See More ... See Less -
Cardinals' Adam Wainwright: Handed tough loss
Wainwright (3-10) allowed one run on eight hits and three walks over six innings Monday, striking out one and taking a loss against the Padres. It's been a brutal season for Wainwright, and he couldn't catch a break Monday despite throwing a quality start. He tossed five shutout frames before the Padres finally broke through in the sixth inning. It was the first time he allowed fewer than three runs in a start since July 24, though he's still sporting an 8.10 ERA on the year. Wainwright is currently lined up to face the Pirates at home this weekend.... See More ... See Less -
Cardinals' Adam Wainwright: Struggles again Tuesday
Wainwright (3-9) took the loss Tuesday, allowing six runs on seven hits and a walk over 4.2 innings in a 6-3 loss against the Pirates. He struck out three. After logging a quality start in his previous outing against the Mets, Wainwright was tagged for six runs against the Pirates as he took his eighth loss in his last nine starts. Over that span, the veteran right-hander's struggled to a 12.56 ERA. Overall, Waiwright's ERA is up to an unsightly 8.61 with a 1.99 WHIP and 44:30 K:BB across 17 starts (77.1 innings) this season. He'll look to get on track in his next outing, tentatively lined up for early next week against the Padres.... See More ... See Less -
Cardinals' Adam Wainwright: Allows three runs in loss
Wainwright (3-8) took the loss Thursday, allowing three runs on four hits and three walks over six innings against the Mets. He struck out two. Wainwright actually pitched well, logging his second quality start of the season. The only damage against the veteran right-hander came via a two-run homer from Pete Alonso in the fourth inning and an RBI double from Francisco Lindor in the fifth, though he also issued three walks on the afternoon. Wainwright holds a 16.20 ERA through three August starts and he's now walked at least two batters in 11 of his 16 outings this season.... See More ... See Less -
Cardinals' Adam Wainwright: Could lose rotation spot
Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak said Wainwright's role will be re-evaluated after his next start Thursday against the Mets, John Denton of MLB.com reports. Wainwright got roughed up again last Friday in Kansas City, yielding eight earned runs while recording only three outs as his season ERA climbed to 8.78. He is just two wins away from reaching 200 career victories, but the 41-year-old right-hander might actually have a better shot at achieving that milestone in a piggyback relief role. "We've talked to him, and he understands that he's got to do better," Mozeliak said of Wainwright. "He's appreciative that he's getting the opportunity [on Thursday], but he understands that things could change [in the future]."... See More ... See Less -
Cardinals' Adam Wainwright: Allows eight more earned runs
Wainwright (3-7) took the loss Friday, allowing eight runs on nine hits and zero strikeouts over one inning against Kansas City. Things continue to get worse for Wainwright, who's now allowed 15 earned runs over four innings in his last two starts. On the season, Wainwright's ERA now stands at 8.78 with a WHIP that's ballooned to 2.09 following this effort. There's something to be said for a nostalgia tour honoring a retiring star, but no one wants to see anyone's career end like this, especially someone as accomplished as Wainwright.... See More ... Cardinals' Adam Wainwright: Yields seven runs in loss
Wainwright (3-6) allowed seven runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out five over three innings Friday, taking the loss versus the Rockies. That wouldn't have been an unusual stat line in Colorado, but Friday's game was in St. Louis. Wainwright has yielded 13 runs over 14 innings while losing two of his three starts since he returned from a shoulder injury. The 41-year-old has a 7.81 ERA, 1.98 WHIP and 39:26 K:BB through 65.2 innings (14 starts) overall. The Cardinals are out of contention, so there's little chance they humiliate a franchise legend by removing him from the rotation over the last two months of the season. Wainwright is projected for a road start in Kansas City next week.... See More ... See Less -
Cardinals' Adam Wainwright: Falls to Cubs on Saturday
Wainwright (3-5) took the loss Saturday, allowing four runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out three batters over six innings against the Cubs. Wainwright gave up a two-run homer in each of the third and fourth frames, which accounted for all of the scoring against him and was enough to saddle him with the loss. The right-hander at least managed to give St. Louis six frames, logging his longest outing since June 17. Wainwright has lost four of five starts since that performance against the Mets, and he's seen his season ERA balloon to 7.18. That's on pace to easily be the worst over a season in the 41-year-old's big-league career, as is his unintimidating 4.9 K/9.... See More ... See Less -
Cardinals' Adam Wainwright: Decent in return
Wainwright (shoulder) allowed two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out three over five innings in a no-decision versus the Diamondbacks on Monday. Wainwright threw 76 pitches (47 strikes) in his return from a right shoulder strain. The 41-year-old did alright in a challenging matchup, most importantly by keeping the ball in the yard, something he did just once in his last five starts before landing on the injured list. At this point in his career, he's just a back-end starter that probably won't help much in fantasy. He carries a 7.31 ERA, 1.92 WHIP and 31:21 K:BB through 56.2 innings over 12 starts, with his next outing likely at home versus the Cubs over the weekend.... See More ... See Less -
Cardinals' Adam Wainwright: Activated from 15-day injured list
Wainwright (shoulder) was reinstated from the 15-day injured list Monday. Wainwright will return to the Cardinals' rotation after missing nearly three weeks with a right shoulder strain. The 41-year-old will start Monday versus the Diamondbacks, though he's only expected to throw 65 pitches in the outing. On the season, Wainwright owns a 7.66 ERA and 1.99 WHIP with 28 strikeouts over 51.2 innings in 11 starts with St. Louis. In a corresponding move, left-handed reliever Zack Thompson was optioned to Triple-A Memphis.... See More ... See Less -
Cardinals' Adam Wainwright: Rejoining rotation Monday
Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said Wainwright (shoulder) will be activated from the 15-day injured list to start Monday's game against the Diamondbacks in Arizona, John Denton of MLB.com reports. "He's done three up-downs in the bullpen and he's ready for 65 pitches," said Marmol, who is hoping to get at least five innings out of Wainwright on Monday. Marmol noted that his preference was to bring back Wainwright from the 15-day injured list later in the week following another live batting practice session, but the veteran right-hander will end up coming back a little earlier than expected to cover some innings and help protect an overtaxed bullpen. Given that a projected 65-pitch workload would still make it tough for Wainwright to get through five innings, he could struggle to qualify for a win in his return to action. Wainwright tentatively lines up for a two-start week, with his second turn through the rotation coming next weekend at home versus the Cubs.... See More ... See Less -
Cardinals' Adam Wainwright: Optimistic after bullpen session
Wainwright (shoulder) expressed optimism about his health following a bullpen session Tuesday, Daniel Guerrero of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. Wainwright received two cortisone injections in his shoulder and back after landing on the injured list earlier this month with a right shoulder strain. He's felt dramatically better since then, including Tuesday during his first mound work since the injury. The 41-year-old will throw a live batting practice session early next week, which he hopes will be used in place of a rehab start. A return in late July or early August is looking realistic.... Cardinals' Adam Wainwright: Throwing off mound Tuesday
Wainwright (shoulder) will begin throwing off a mound Tuesday, Daniel Guerrero of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. After receiving multiple injections in his right shoulder, Wainwright is now set to begin working toward a return. Manager Oliver Marmol said the goal is for Wainwright to return as a starter, so he will likely require multiple rehab outings in the minors down the line in order to build his arm back up. The veteran righty holds a 7.66 ERA and 1.99 WHIP across 51.2 innings over 11 starts this season.... See More ... See Less -
Cardinals' Adam Wainwright: Gets injection in shoulder
Wainwright had an injection in his right shoulder Friday, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports. Wainwright will be shut down for the next few days to see how his shoulder responds to the injection. It's unclear how the injection impacts his recovery timeline, but Wainwright is likely still looking at a lengthy IL stint.... See More ... See Less -
Cardinals' Adam Wainwright: Officially placed on injured list
Wainwright was placed on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with a right shoulder strain. The Cardinals had said after Wainwright's latest disastrous start Tuesday in Miami that he would land on the IL and the move is now official. It could be a fairly length absence, as even once he's deemed healthy Wainwright clearly has some stuff to work on. He'll likely require multiple rehab starts before the Cards consider re-inserting him into their rotation.... See More ... See Less -
Cardinals' Adam Wainwright: Headed to injured list
Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said after Tuesday's loss to the Marlins that Wainwright will be placed on the 15-day injured list with shoulder inflammation, Ben Frederickson of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. Wainwright could use a break after getting torched again Tuesday for seven earned runs on seven hits and two walks over just 3.1 innings. He's surrendered 20 combined earned runs across his last three starts and his season ERA has ballooned to 7.66. The 41-year-old right-hander seems certain to retire at the conclusion of the 2023 campaign, and it's unclear how many major-league starts he may have left.... See More ... See Less
