  • Yankees' Cody Poteet: Optioned to Triple-A

The Yankees optioned Poteet to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Sunday. The right-hander was an outside candidate for New York's rotation after Gerrit Cole went down with an elbow injury, but Luis Gil ended up winning the job. Poteet pitched well in camp with a 2.35 ERA and 7:1 K:BB over 7.2 innings and could fill a bullpen role later on for the Yankees if he gets off to a strong start at Triple-A.

  • Yankees' Cody Poteet: Could be rotation candidate

Poteet is a candidate to join the Yankees' Opening Day rotation due to Gerrit Cole (elbow) being expected to be sidelined for 1-to-2 months to begin the season, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports. Luke Weaver (neck) looks to be the top candidate to fill the fifth opening in the rotation in the wake of Cole's injury, provided Weaver can overcome the neck issue that caused him to be scratched from his most recent Grapefruit League start Tuesday. If Weaver isn't able to get fully stretched out for Opening Day, however, Poteet may be next in line to fill the rotation vacancy. Signed to a one-year, $750,000 deal in January, Poteet has impressed through his first three spring outings, striking out seven and walking one over 5.2 scoreless frames while holding opposing hitters to a .158 average. Beyond Weaver and Poteet, Will Warren, Cody Morris and Luis Gil are other candidates for the fifth rotation spot.

  • Yankees' Cody Poteet: Gets MLB deal from Yankees

Poteet signed a one-year, $750,000 contract with the Yankees on Thursday, Ari Alexander of KPRC 2 Houston reports. Poteet had Tommy John surgery in August of 2022, making it back last year for one late-season appearance with Triple-A Omaha in the Royals organization. The 29-year-old holds a career 4.45 ERA and 53:27 K:BB across 58.2 frames at the major-league level. Poteet has options remaining and seems likely to begin the 2024 season at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

  • Cody Poteet: Released by Royals

Poteet was released by the Royals on Saturday. Poteet signed a minor-league deal last winter after having Tommy John surgery and made it back for one late-season appearance with Triple-A Omaha. The Royals decided not to keep him through the offseason, so the 29-year-old righty will look for a new organization.

  • Marlins' Cody Poteet: Removed from 40-man roster

Poteet (elbow) was activated off the 60-day injured list and outrighted to Triple-A Jacksonville on Tuesday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Poteet may no longer be on the injured list, but he won't be healthy any time soon, as he underwent Tommy John surgery in August and will likely miss the entire 2023 season. No team wanted to claim him and wait out his recovery, so he'll continue to rehab as a member of the Marlins organization.

  • Marlins' Cody Poteet: Will require Tommy John surgery

Poteet will undergo Tommy John surgery on his injured elbow, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. It's not clear when Poteet will undergo the procedure, but this news rules him out for the rest of this season and could prevent him from pitching at all in 2023.

  • Marlins' Cody Poteet: Shifts to 60-day IL

Poteet (elbow) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Sunday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. Poteet landed on the shelf with elbow inflammation Friday, and he'll now be sidelined until late September, if not the rest of the season. The right-hander has a 3.86 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 21:11 K:BB across 28 innings this year.

Poteet was placed on the injured list Friday with right elbow inflammation, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. It's not exactly clear when Poteet picked up the injury, but he will be unavailable for the time being. • Marlins' Cody Poteet: Works in relief in return from IL

Poteet was charged with five earned runs on seven hits and no walks while striking out one in two innings out of the bullpen in Saturday's 10-0 loss to the Phillies. Poteet had been serving as a starter for Miami prior to landing on the injured list May 29 with an elbow injury, but he looks set to work out of the bullpen moving forward with Braxton Garrett and Max Meyer having seemingly settled into back-end spots in the rotation.

  • Marlins' Cody Poteet: Reinstated from IL

Poteet (elbow) was reinstated from the 15-day injured list Friday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. Poteet will return to the Marlins after he missed over a month of action while nursing an elbow issue. • Marlins' Cody Poteet: Rehab shifting to Triple-A

Poteet (elbow) will move his rehab assignment to Triple-A Jacksonville on Friday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. Poteet began his rehab assignment at Single-A Jupiter on Monday and struck out four in two scoreless innings. It's not yet clear how many innings he'll throw Friday, but it's encouraging to see him advancing to the Triple-A level, which could represent the final step in his recovery process.

  • Marlins' Cody Poteet: Throws 30 pitches Friday

Poteet (elbow) threw a 30-pitch bullpen session Friday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. Poteet threw 20 pitches during a side session Tuesday and was able to increase his pitch count several days later. As long as he feels good following Friday's throwing session, it's possible that he'll be cleared to face hitters sometime next week.

  • Marlins' Cody Poteet: Completes side session

Poteet (elbow) tossed a 20-pitch bullpen session Tuesday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. The Marlins will likely check back in with Poteet on Wednesday before determining whether he needs another bullpen session or if he's ready to resume facing hitters in live batting practice. Poteet made two turns through the rotation as Miami's fifth starter before being placed on the 15-day injured list May 29 with a right elbow muscle injury.

  • Marlins' Cody Poteet: Set to throw this weekend

Poteet (elbow) will start a throwing program this weekend, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Earlier this week he was cleared to play catch on flat ground, and it's unclear if that's what he'll be doing this weekend or if he will be throwing from a mound. Either way, Poteet may be brought along slowly given the nature of his elbow muscle injury.

  • Marlins' Cody Poteet: Resumes flat-ground work

Marlins manager Don Mattingly disclosed Monday that Poteet (elbow) has been cleared to play catch, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Poteet has been on the 15-day injured list since May 29 with a right elbow muscle injury and will likely need at least a couple more weeks to get stretched back out before the Marlins consider activating him. Whenever Poteet is ready to go, he may have to settle for a spot in the bullpen or in the Triple-A Jacksonville rotation if back-end starters Edward Cabrera and Braxton Garrett have performed well enough to maintain roles with the big club.

  • Marlins' Cody Poteet: Yet to start throwing

Poteet (elbow) has yet to resume a throwing program since he was placed on the 15-day injured list May 29, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Jesus Luzardo (forearm) also has yet to resume throwing since being placed on the IL on May 12, so the Marlins have been forced to dip into the minor-league well for reinforcement in their rotation. Edward Cabrera was called up from Triple- A Jacksonville last week to replace Poteet as the Marlins' fifth starter and will get his second turn through the rotation after shutting out the Rockies over six innings in his 2022 MLB debut. Cabrera should have a decent amount of leash in a starting role while neither Poteet nor Luzardo are close to returning.

  • Marlins' Cody Poteet: Shut down with elbow injury

The Marlins placed Poteet on the 15-day injured list Sunday with a right elbow muscle injury, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Poteet entered the rotation May 21 as a replacement for the injured Jesus Luzardo (forearm), but he made just two starts before succumbing to an injury of his own. Miami has yet to name a replacement in the rotation for Poteet, but Edward Cabrera would be available on four days' rest to come up from Triple-A Jacksonville and slot in as the Marlins' new No. 5 starter.

  • Marlins' Cody Poteet: Struggles in second start

Poteet (0-1) took the loss Wednesday, allowing five runs on four hits and three walks over three innings against the Rays. He struck out one. Poteet was working on three days' rest after tossing two innings in relief during Saturday's matchup against Atlanta. The right-hander impressed during his first start in place of Jesus Luzardo (forearm), tossing 4.2 scoreless while striking out four. However, Poeteet struggled out of the gate Wednesday, allowing five runs in the first inning. Despite the poor outing, the 27-year-old still sports a 2.42 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP across 26.0 innings.

  • Marlins' Cody Poteet: Draws start Wednesday

Manager Don Mattingly said Poteet will start Wednesday's game against the Rays in Tampa, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. Poteet will be making his second turn in the rotation as a replacement for Jesus Luzardo (forearm), who has yet to resume throwing since landing on the 15-day injured list May 15. In his first start May 17, Poteet took a no-decision while striking out four Nationals over 4.2 scoreless frames. He then made a two-inning appearance out of the bullpen Saturday against Atlanta, so he'll be returning to the mound Wednesday on three days' rest rather than the standard four. With that in mind, Mattingly is unlikely to have Poteet pitch more than twice through the order before turning the game over to the bullpen.

  • Marlins' Cody Poteet: Impresses in no-decision

Poteet didn't factor into the decision in Tuesday's 5-1 win over the Nationals, giving up only one hit and one walk over 4.2 scoreless innings. He struck out four. Making his first start of the season after eight relief appearances, Poteet could only give the Marlins 54 pitches (37 strikes) but still came within one out of picking up his first win of the season. The performance almost certainly earned the 27-year-old another turn or two in the rotation while Jesus Luzardo (forearm) is sidelined, but with Edward Cabrera and Max Meyer looming at Triple-A, Poteet likely isn't a long-term option as a starter.
