Player Outlook
Michael Toglia played in 45 games for the Rockies last season but spent the final month of the campaign in the minors. He had a .163/.224/.284 slash line with four homers in 152 plate appearances, and he had a 34.6 percent strikeout rate through 76 career big-league contests. The 2019 first-round pick had an .842 OPS with 16 homers in 78 games at Triple-A in 2023, so he has little else to prove offensively at the minor-league level. Toglia should have a chance to earn a place on Colorado's Opening Day roster, but his opportunities are likely to be inconsistent without a significant improvement.

  • Rockies' Michael Toglia: Makes Opening Day roster

Toglia has been informed that he has made the Rockies' Opening Day roster, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. Toglia beat out Sean Bouchard for the final spot in the outfield. The 25-year-old could see action in right field mostly against left-handed pitching, and he's also capable of filling in at first base on days Kris Bryant plays the outfield or is at designated hitter.

  • Rockies' Michael Toglia: Checks back into spring lineup

Toglia (neck) will start at first base and bat cleanup in Thursday's Cactus League game against the Guardians. Toglia was scratched from the starting nine ahead of Wednesday's game against the Diamondbacks while he dealt with neck stiffness, but the injury doesn't look to be anything that will derail his bid for the Opening Day roster. The 25-year-old corner outfielder/first baseman has made a compelling case to win a bench role with the Rockies this spring, as he's slashing .333/.429/.700 through his first 14 Cactus League games.

  • Rockies' Michael Toglia: Late scratch with stiff neck

Toglia was scratched from the Rockies' Cactus League lineup for Wednesday's game against the Diamondbacks due to neck stiffness, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. Toglia should be considered day-to-day. Hunter Goodman will take Toglia's spot in the lineup, playing first base and batting eighth.

  • Rockies' Michael Toglia: Strong start to Cactus League

Toglia has gone 3-for-7 with two home runs through his first three games of the Cactus League. Toglia has earned 272 plate appearances in the majors combined across the last two seasons, but he's struggled to just a .187/.246/.325 line in that span. As a result, he's in a battle for a roster spot as a reserve at first base and in the outfield, along with the likes of Hunter Goodman and Elehuris Montero. Toglia will need to continue to perform well to ultimately earn a roster spot, but he's made a strong impression early on this spring.

  • Rockies' Michael Toglia: Optioned to Triple-A

Colorado optioned Toglia to Triple-A Albuquerque on Tuesday. Toglia showed some promising flashes down the stretch in 2022, but the 25-year-old first baseman and corner outfielder has slashed just .163/.224/.284 in 45 games (152 plate appearances) this season at the major-league level. Cole Tucker is being summoned from Albuquerque in a corresponding move.

  • Rockies' Michael Toglia: Sitting in third straight

Toglia is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Blue Jays, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. The switch-hitting Toglia finds himself on the bench for the third game in a row, this time versus Toronto right-hander Kevin Gausman after he had been excluded from the lineup against a pair of southpaws in the first two contests of the series. Dating back to Aug. 9, Toglia is slashing .127/.186/.291 with a 30.5 percent strikeout rate over a stretch of 17 games, and his ongoing slump may have prompted manager Bud Black to pull the plug on the youngster in an everyday role. Elehuris Montero will pick up a third straight start Sunday at Toglia's expense.

  • Rockies' Michael Toglia: Flashing power potential

Toglia went 1-for-4 with a solo home run Sunday against the Orioles. Toglia has held a regular role in the Colorado lineup since July 16, when he was recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque. In that span, he's hit just .170 with a 33 percent strikeout rate, though he has homered in two of his last three starts -- neither of which have come at home. The Rockies have shown a willingness to let Toglia play through his struggles, though the addition of Hunter Goodman to the roster could complicate his playing time moving forward.

  • Rockies' Michael Toglia: Takes seat Wednesday

Toglia is absent from the lineup for Wednesday's game in Tampa Bay. Toglia slugged a home run in Tuesday's loss to the Rays but will begin Wednesday's contest on the bench. Charlie Blackmon is getting a start in right field and Jurickson Profar will be in the designated hitter spot while Toglia sits.

  • Rockies' Michael Toglia: Moves to bench Wednesday

Toglia is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Diamondbacks. After going 1-for-3 with a double, a walk, a stolen base, an RBI and a run in Tuesday's 8-5 loss, Toglia will take a seat in the series finale and make way for Nolan Jones in right field. While bouncing between right field and first base, Toglia had started in nine of the Rockies' last 10 games but went just 2-for-30 with 12 strikeouts.

  • Rockies' Michael Toglia: Takes hold of everyday role

Toglia will start in right field and bat seventh in Wednesday's game against the Padres. With the Rockies moving first baseman C.J. Cron and outfielder Randal Grichuk ahead of the trade deadline, Toglia appears to be temporarily locked into an everyday role, at least until Colorado gets the likes of Charlie Blackmon (hand) and Kris Bryant (finger) back from the injured list. Toglia will pick up his fifth straight start Wednesday and his 10th start in the last 11 games. He's hitting just .194 with two extra-base hits over his last 10 contests.

  • Rockies' Michael Toglia: Making most of plate appearances

Toglia went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk Wednesday against the Nationals. Toglia has gotten five consecutive starts at first base with C.J. Cron (back) sidelined. He's now collected hits in each of his last three games while tallying a double, a homer, three RBI and three runs scored. Cron is expected back Friday, so Toglia's playing time in the short term will likely dry up, but he could see more run across the final two months of the campaign depending on the Rockies' moves at the trade deadline.

  • Rockies' Michael Toglia: Nabs fifth straight start

Toglia will start at first base and bat fifth in Wednesday's game against the Nationals. He'll stick in the lineup for a fifth consecutive game, manning first base once again while C.J. Cron (back) remains out of the lineup. Over the previous four games, Toglia went 3-for-16 with a double, two runs and two RBI. Cron has said that he expects to return to the lineup Friday versus Oakland, so Toglia could soon be headed back into a reserve role.

  • Rockies' Michael Toglia: Pops homer Sunday

Toglia went 1-for-5 with a solo home run in Sunday's 8-7 extra-innings win over the Yankees. Toglia got the nod at first base, spelling C.J. Cron, who served as the designated hitter Sunday. The homer was Toglia's first of the campaign. He's batting just .172 with a 2:10 BB:K over 31 major-league plate appearances, and it's unlikely he sees much more than a reserve role while on the Rockies' 26-man roster.

  • Rockies' Michael Toglia: Officially promoted

The Rockies recalled Toglia from Triple-A Albuquerque on Friday, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. With Elehuris Montero headed back to the minors, Toglia will provide the Rockies with a depth option at first baseman. The 24-year-old is slashing .253/.364/.479 through 343 plate appearances in Triple-A but has yet to carry even that modest success into the majors.

  • Rockies' Michael Toglia: Expected to be recalled

Toglia is expected to be recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque by the Rockies prior to Friday's game versus the Yankees, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. The Rockies previously announced the demotion of Elehuris Montero and it sounds like Toglia will be the corresponding move. Toglia has struggled during his major-league opportunities but sports a .981 OPS with eight home runs over his last 23 games with Albuquerque.

  • Rockies' Michael Toglia: Getting another start

Toglia is starting at first base and batting seventh for the Rockies on Wednesday against the Phillies, Patrick Lyons of TheDNVR.com reports. Toglia wasn't in the lineup Monday for the first game after his recall, but he's now started two straight -- this one is against a righty. Mike Moustakas is on the bench. The two should share first base while C.J. Cron (back) is out.

  • Rockies' Michael Toglia: Recalled from minors

The Rockies recalled Toglia from Triple-A Albuquerque on Monday, Danielle Allentuck of The Denver Gazette reports. Toglia wasn't able to win an Opening Day roster spot but is up now to replace C.J. Cron (back), who was placed on the 10-day injured list. The 24-year-old turned in an .857 OPS with eight home runs over his 37 games with Albuquerque. Though Mike Moustakas is starting at first base Monday versus the Reds, the switch-hitting Toglia could be a candidate to fill a short-side platoon role at the position while Cron is on the shelf.

  • Rockies' Michael Toglia: Smacks first spring homer

Toglia went 2-for-5 with a solo home run and three strikeouts in Sunday's Cactus League game against the Diamondbacks. Toglia was in the lineup at first base, though he'll be trying to crack the Opening Day roster as an outfielder. His chances of doing so have improved due to injuries to Sean Bouchard (biceps) and Randal Grichuk (groin), though he has struck out 12 times across 39 plate appearances through 13 games this spring. Toglia also struck out at a 36.7 percent clip in a 120 plate-appearance sample in Colorado to close the 2022 campaign.

  • Rockies' Michael Toglia: In better position for MLB roster

Toglia is better positioned for a spot on the Rockies' Opening Day roster with Sean Bouchard (biceps) out indefinitely, Danielle Allentuck of the Denver Gazette reports. Toglia was a mess offensively in his first taste of MLB action last season, striking out 44 times in 120 at-bats, but he worked diligently this winter on his timing to the baseball and barrel accuracy. Prior to his callup to the Rockies last August, the 24-year-old registered an .852 OPS with 30 home runs in 114 games between Double-A Hartford and Triple-A Albuquerque. He can play first base and the corner outfield while also functioning as an option at DH. That's a similar profile to Bouchard, who suffered a ruptured biceps muscle Wednesday.

  • Rockies' Michael Toglia: Ends season with four strikeouts

Toglia went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts Wednesday against the Dodgers. Toglia ended his season on a sour note, though he had collected at least one hit in his three prior games. He ended his rookie season with a .216/.275/.378 line across 120 plate appearances, and he had a concerning 36.7 percent strikeout rate.
