  • Red Sox's Quinn Priester: Notches win in Red Sox debut

Priester (3-6) pitched five innings of one-run ball to pick up the win Sunday against the Rays, allowing four hits and one walk while striking out two. Called up Sunday to make his Red Sox debut, Priester held his own to notch his third win of the season. The right-hander did not allow an extra-base hit, limiting the Rays to just four singles thanks to a robust 12:2 GB:FB. Acquired from Pittsburgh at the trade deadline, Priester struggled to a 5.40 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 42:12 K:BB in 38.1 innings (nine starts) for Triple-A Worcester. Sunday's start was a step in the right direction, but Priester likely needs more time to develop in the minor leagues before becoming a major-league asset. The 24-year-old owns an ugly 6.23 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and 69:41 K:BB in 94.2 career MLB innings (15 starts).

  • Red Sox's Quinn Priester: Recalled ahead of start

Priester was recalled from Triple-A Worcester on Sunday ahead of his start against the Rays. Priester will be making his Red Sox debut, as he last pitched in the majors July 27 as a member of the Pirates before getting traded to Boston two days later for Nick Yorke. Priester gave up eight runs in his first start for Worcester, but he has a 3.75 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 38 strikeouts in 36 innings over his last eight starts. He'll likely have a chance to compete for a big-league rotation spot in the spring.

  • Red Sox's Quinn Priester: Possibility to pitch Sunday

Priester is an option to start for the Red Sox on Sunday versus the Rays, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports. Manager Alex Cora has ruled out Brayan Bello and Tanner Houck being used in the regular-season finale, but he didn't dismiss the possibility of Priester making his Red Sox debut. Priester has collected a 5.40 ERA and 42:12 K:BB over 38.1 innings covering nine starts with Triple-A Worcester since being acquired at the trade deadline from the Pirates.

  • Red Sox's Quinn Priester: Traded to Boston

The Red Sox acquired Priester from the Pirates on Monday in exchange for Nick Yorke, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. Boston won't have room in the big-league rotation for Priester, but he'll supplement the organization's starting pitching depth. The 23-year-old right-hander hasn't shown much at the major-league level to this point, collecting a 6.46 ERA and 67:40 K:BB over 94.2 innings. However, Priester was a well-regarded prospect with a 3.50 ERA and 25.1 percent strikeout rate during his time at the Double- and Triple-A levels. He will report to Triple-A Worcester as he begins his time in the Red Sox organization.

  • Pirates' Quinn Priester: Activated from IL

The Pirates activated Priester (lat) from the 15-day injured list Tuesday. Priester has been shelved since June 6 due to a right lat injury, but after making a pair of rehab starts, Pittsburgh determined he was ready to rejoin the active roster. The 24-year-old completed five innings in his latest rehab outing and could take the spot of Jared Jones (lat) in the Pirates rotation, which would put him on track to start Sunday against the White Sox. Priester holds a 4.83 ERA across 31.2 innings with the Pirates this season.

  • Pirates' Quinn Priester: Building workload

Priester (lat) completed five innings while allowing one run on three hits and no walks with six strikeouts in a rehab outing with Triple-A Indianapolis on Tuesday. The outing was Priester's second rehab appearance, and he looks to be nearing a full workload. The Pirates' plans for him upon his activation from the 15-day injured list remain unclear, though he is a candidate to take the vacated rotation spot of Jared Jones (lat).

  • Pirates' Quinn Priester: Beginning rehab assignment

Priester (lat) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Indianapolis on Wednesday, Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reports. Priester has been on the 15-day injured list since June 6, but he has been given the green light to test his injured lat in a competitive setting. The Pirates haven't specified how many rehab outings the 24-year-old will need, but it's likely he returns from the IL before the All-Star break.

  • Pirates' Quinn Priester: Called up for Sunday's start

Priester was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis and will start Sunday against the Blue Jays, Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reports. The 24-year-old will join Pittsburgh's rotation Sunday as the replacement for Martin Perez (groin), who landed on the injured list Tuesday. Priester has been decent in five starts for the Pirates this season with a 4.33 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 17:10 K:BB across 27 innings, and another solid outing Sunday could earn him a longer look in the rotation.

  • Pirates' Quinn Priester: Optioned to Triple-A

The Pirates optioned Priester to Triple-A Indianapolis on Wednesday. With Paul Skenes in the fold and Bailey Falter pitching well enough to keep his rotation spot, Priester becomes the odd man out. He holds a 4.33 ERA and 17:10 K:BB over 27 innings covering five starts with the big club this season. Priester will join the Indianapolis rotation and likely will be the first to be called upon when the Pirates need a starter.

  • Pirates' Quinn Priester: Dealt another loss

Priester (0-4) took the loss Tuesday against Milwaukee, allowing four runs on nine hits and two walks during six innings. He struck out five. Priester endured a nightmare second inning in which he allowed a two-run homer to Sal Frelick as part of a four-run, six-hit frame. The Pirates were never able to recover from the early deficit, falling 4-3 to give Priester his fourth loss in five starts. Despite the lack of wins, Priester has shown signs of improvement in his second year in the bigs, with his ERA dropping from 7.74 to 4.33 this season in 27 innings. With Paul Skenes impressing in his MLB debut and very likely to stick around, Priester could be the odd man out in the Pirates' rotation.

  • Pirates' Quinn Priester: Saddled with third loss

Priester (0-3) was hit with the loss Tuesday versus the Angels, allowing five runs (three earned) on seven hits and two walks while striking out one batter in 4.2 innings. Priester was able to get through the first three innings of Tuesday's game without much trouble, but things took a turn in the fourth when he allowed a three-run homer to Kevin Pillar. A throwing error from Priester also extended the fifth inning, during which two more unearned runs came across to score. It was an all-around forgettable performance for the 23-year-old, who now holds a 3.86 ERA through four starts and will remain in search of his first win next week in Milwaukee.

  • Pirates' Quinn Priester: Hurt by long ball in quality start

Priester (0-2) took the loss Wednesday as the Pirates were downed 4-0 by the A's, giving up three runs (two earned) on five hits and four walks over six innings. He struck out three. The 23-year-old battled both his control and his command, throwing only 59 of 97 pitches for strikes and serving up homers to Abraham Toro in the second inning and Tyler Nevin in the third. Priester still managed to put together his second straight quality start, and through three outings since his promotion he's delivered a solid 3.31 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 11:6 K:BB through 16.1 innings. His time in the Pittsburgh rotation could be running short though, with top prospect Paul Skenes getting stretched out to six innings in his last start for Triple-A Indianapolis. If Priester gets another turn, he lines up for a home start against the Angels early next week.

  • Pirates' Quinn Priester: Delivers six shutout frames

Priester struck out six and gave up three hits and one walk over six scoreless innings during Friday's 3-0 loss in San Francisco. He didn't factor in the decision. Priester and Giants starter Kyle Harrison each delivered six shutout frames, and the game remained a scoreless tie until Patrick Bailey's walk-off homer in the ninth. Priester surrendered three homers in his season debut versus Boston last week, but he looked much better Friday with 14 whiffs on 84 pitches (58 strikes). The strong performance should give the 23-year-old another turn through the rotation while Marco Gonzales remains sidelined by a forearm injury.

  • Pirates' Quinn Priester: Hit hard in season debut

Priester (0-1) took the loss Friday, giving up five runs (four earned) on seven hits - including three home runs - and a walk over 4.1 innings as the Pirates were routed 8-1 by the Red Sox. He struck out two. It's never a good sign for a pitcher when they have more homers allowed than strikeouts, and the first long ball he served up -- a solo shot by Wilyer Abreu in the first inning -- actually left PNC Park completely. Priester was making his 2024 debut for Pittsburgh on Friday, and after tossing 53 of 86 pitches for strikes, he could be headed back to Triple-A Indianapolis. If the 23-year-old righty sticks around, his next start will likely come at home next week against the Brewers.

  • Pirates' Quinn Priester: Dispatched to Triple-A

The Pirates optioned Priester to Triple-A Indianapolis. Priester missed out on a spot in the Pirates' season-opening rotation, with Pittsburgh settling on veterans Martin Perez, Marco Gonzales and Bailey Falter and rookie Jared Jones to fill out its starting ranks behind Opening Day starter Mitch Keller. The 23-year-old right-hander finished the spring with a 5.87 ERA and 13:3 K:BB over 15.1 innings.

  • Pirates' Quinn Priester: First career quality start

Priester did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing two runs on two hits and five walks over six innings in a 4-2 loss against the Reds. He struck out four. Priester allowed no hits through five, but following a Jonathan India single to lead off the sixth, TJ Friedl hit a two-run homer to break up the shutout. Priester allowed no more damage to complete six innings for the second consecutive outing and earn his first career quality start. He entered the contest with an 8.61 ERA spanning 38.2 innings over eight appearances (six starts) in his first big-league season, but finally showed why the Pirates made him their first-round draft selection in 2019. He'll look to build off Sunday's effort with one more 2023 appearance, currently slated to take place next weekend at home against Miami.

  • Pirates' Quinn Priester: Lasts six innings in bulk role

Priester didn't factor into the decision Tuesday as the Pirates were routed 14-1 by the Cubs, giving up four runs on five hits and two walks over six relief innings. He struck out two. Bailey Falter got the start but curiously got the hook after giving up two runs in the first inning, with Priester taking over to begin the second. The rookie right-hander ended up handling his biggest workload in eight big-league appearances -- his previous high was 5.1 frames -- but he also served up his 10th homer, leaving him with a 8.61 ERA, 1.73 WHIP and 29:21 K:BB through 38.2 MLB innings. It's not yet clear if the Pirates will continue deploying Falter and Priester together as a tandem in some fashion, but if so the duo would line up for two more appearances before the end of the regular season.

  • Pirates' Quinn Priester: Earns win in mediocre outing

Priester (3-2) allowed four earned runs on four hits and one walk while striking out four across four innings to earn the win Wednesday against the Nationals. He was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis on Wednesday and followed opener Colin Selby. Priester worked four effective innings, during which the only hit he allowed was a solo home run. However, things fell apart when he stayed for his fifth frame and allowed a three-run home run. The outing was encouraging from the perspective that Priester induced nine swinging strikes on 62 total pitches and was in the zone consistently, but he's now allowed at least four earned runs in all but one of his seven big-league appearances.

  • Pirates' Quinn Priester: Tosses four innings

Priester yielded three runs on five hits and three walks over four-plus innings in Friday's win over Milwaukee. He struck out three and did not factor in the decision. Priester coughed up a pair of runs in the first inning but otherwise held the Brewers in check until Carlos Santana led off the fifth with a solo shot. Friday's start was Priester's shortest but it was also his first time allowing fewer than four runs. The right-handed rookie has registered an 8.69 ERA with a 16:14 K:BB through four career starts. Priester is currently lined up to face Atlanta at home next week.

  • Pirates' Quinn Priester: Getting another start Monday

Priester is scheduled to start Monday's game against the Padres in San Diego. Priester was roughed up for seven earned runs on seven hits and two walks in his MLB debut July 17 against Cleveland, but he was at least able to save the Pirates' bullpen to some degree by covering 5.1 innings. Despite the poor showing last week, Priester will get another chance to prove he's worthy of sticking around as the Bucs' No. 5 starter. He'll return to the hill Monday on six days' rest.
