Player Outlook
Expectations were high for Nick Lodolo entering his sophomore season, but he ended up making just seven starts before going down with a stress reaction in his left tibia. The southpaw appeared to be on the verge of a return in August, but a second stress reaction in the same tibia took a return off the table. Fortunately for Lodolo and the Reds, offseason surgery is not expected to be necessary. During his brief time on the field, Lodolo's stuff was down across the board. He allowed 10 home runs in 34.1 innings for an unsightly 27.0% HR/FB. Lodolo admitted in spring training that he was having some trouble adjusting to the pitch clock, so that may have played a factor. No matter how you slice it, it was a lost season for the 2019 No. 7 overall pick. He was still able to rack up the strikeouts even with diminished velocity last season (28.3 K%), and Lodolo is just entering his age-26 season. Cincinnati will have him take the ball every fifth day for as long as his body allows.

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Fans eight in no-decision

Lodolo allowed four runs on six hits and one walk while striking out eight batters over 6.1 innings in a no-decision against Washington on Saturday. Lodolo carried a 4-3 lead into the seventh frame before exiting with one out and a runner on first base. That runner came around to score after his departure, costing the left-hander a quality start and a chance at a victory. Despite that outcome, there were plenty of positives in the outing for Lodolo -- this was his first time exceeding 4.2 innings across his past four starts, and he had much better control after walking four batters in two of his previous three appearances. Lodolo holds a 3.51 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 89:25 K:BB over 84.2 innings this season.

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Struggles with command

Lodolo yielded two runs on three hits and four walks over 4.2 innings in a no-decision Sunday. He struck out four during the loss to Miami. Lodolo kept the Marlins off the board through four innings before Jonah Bride knocked a two-run single in the fifth. Lodolo has failed to complete five frames in three straight outings since his win in Pittsburgh on June 18. During that three-start span, he's produced a lackluster 11:9 K:BB over 13 innings. Lodolo finishes his first half with a strong 3.33 ERA and 81:24 K:BB through 78.1 frames.

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Can't take advantage of offense

Lodolo came away with a no-decision in Tuesday's 12-6 win over the Rockies, giving up four runs on five hits and a walk over 3.2 innings. He struck out four. The Reds staked Lodolo to a 5-0 lead after two innings, but the southpaw struggled with his command and served up a pair of homers to Brenton Doyle and Michael Toglia in the fourth inning before getting the hook after 69 pitches (36 strikes). Lodolo has failed to complete five innings in back-to-back outings, but that comes on the heels of four straight quality starts. He'll try to get back on track in his final trip to the mound before the All-Star break, as he lines up for a home start against the Marlins this weekend.

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Activated for Tuesday's start

The Reds reinstated Lodolo (finger) from the 15-day injured list to start Tuesday against the Rockies. The left-hander will step back into Cincinatti's rotation after spending the 15-day minimum on the shelf due to a blister. Lodolo has been lights out through 12 starts this season with a 2.96 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 73:19 K:BB across 70 innings, and he shouldn't have much, if any, of a workload restriction given the brevity of his absence.

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Completes side session Saturday

Lodolo (finger) threw a bullpen session Saturday, MLB.com reports. The throwing session was Lodolo's second in four days, as he had previously tossed 20 pitches to hitters in live batting practice Wednesday. Given that he's been on the injured list only since June 25 with a left finger blister, Lodolo will likely be able to bypass a minor-league rehab assignment, though it's not immediately clear if he'll be activated from the IL during the final week before the All-Star break. The Reds have already announced their starters through Wednesday, so Thursday's series finale versus the Rockies would likely be the earliest date that Lodolo might be activated.

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Forced to IL with blister issue

The Reds placed Lodolo on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with a left finger blister. Lodolo battled the blister issue during his start this past Sunday against the Red Sox, and the Reds have opted to give the left-hander some down time in order to let the finger heal. He had been slated to start Friday in St. Louis, but the Reds will now need a substitute. Graham Ashcraft has pitched well in two starts since being demoted to Triple-A Louisville, so he's a candidate to take Lodolo's spot.

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Limited by blister

Lodolo was limited Sunday versus the Red Sox as a result of a blister on his left index finger, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Lodolo tossed 4.2 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits and four walks while striking out three batters against Boston. The left-hander was tagged with the loss, while the four free passes were a season high, which is likely the result of the blister on his throwing hand. Following the contest, Lodolo said that "the feeling for the ball was not the same," but that it's "not impacting him a ton," so it's possible he'll be ready to go for his next start. The 26-year-old is tentatively set to return to the mound Friday in St. Louis, but his status will be worth monitoring in the coming days.

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Dominant in fifth straight win

Lodolo (8-2) earned the win Tuesday over the Pirates, allowing a run on four hits over seven innings. He struck out eight. A Ke'Bryan Hayes homer in the seventh inning was the lone mark against Lodolo on Tuesday as he earned his fifth straight win -- the left-hander hasn't allowed more than two runs in a start during that span. Overall, Lodolo's ERA is down to 2.76 on the year with a 1.01 WHIP and 70:15 K:BB across 65.1 innings. He'll look to extend his winning streak to six in his next outing, currently scheduled as a home rematch with the Pirates early next week.

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Earns fourth straight win

Lodolo (7-2) earned the win against the Guardians on Wednesday, allowing two runs on seven hits and three walks with six strikeouts over six innings. After retiring the first three batters he faced, Lodolo had traffic on the bases all night but limited the damage to just two runs. Lodolo even hit two batters, but he was able to battle for his fourth consecutive win and third straight quality start. Despite two stints on the injured list, Lodolo has had a huge bounceback season and now owns a 2.93 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 62:15 K:BB through 10 starts. He tentatively lines up to face the Pirates next Monday.

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Fans seven in sixth win

Lodolo (6-2) picked up the win Friday, allowing one run on four hits and two walks over six innings in a 3-2 victory over the Cubs. He struck out seven. The left-hander delivered his second straight quality start and fourth of the season on 99 pitches (61 strikes), and the only real mistake Lodolo made resulted in a Dansby Swanson solo shot in the sixth inning. The seven Ks were the most Lodolo has managed in three starts since returning from a groin strain, but he's won all three of those outings with a 2.08 ERA and 1.10 WHIP. He'll look to keep rolling in his next trip to the mound, which lines up to come at home next week against the Guardians.

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Wins with quality start

Lodolo (5-2) allowed two runs on seven hits and a walk over six innings Sunday, striking out three and earning a win over the Cubs. Lodolo kept the Cubs off the board through four innings before they tallied a run in the fifth and sixth innings. He's allowed three runs over 11.1 innings while winning his last two starts since returning from the injured list. However, he's totaled just six punchouts during that span. On the year, Lodolo owns a 3.11 ERA with a 49:10 K:BB through 46.1 frames. His next start is projected to be a rematch with the Cubs at home.

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Strong in return

Lodolo (4-2) allowed a run on five hits over 5.1 innings Monday, striking out three and earning a win over St. Louis. Aside from Paul Goldschmidt's first-inning solo shot, Lodolo kept the Cardinals quiet while cruising to a victory. It was Lodolo's first start since May 11 after a trip to the injured list due to a groin issue. Before that IL stint, he lost two straight starts while coughing up eight total runs through 11 innings. Lodolo now owns a 3.12 ERA with a 46:9 K:BB through seven starts. His next outing is lined up to be on the road against the Cubs.

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Activated ahead of start

Lodolo (groin) was activated from the 15-day injured list Monday ahead of his scheduled start against the Cardinals. An extended bullpen session last Wednesday put Lodolo in the clear to return after the minimum, and without a rehab assignment. The left-hander has pitched brilliantly in between IL stints this season, posting a 3.34 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 43:9 K:BB over 35 innings. While he may not be available for 90-plus pitches right away in his return, there has been nothing to suggest Lodolo will face any major restrictions against St. Louis.

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Still on track for Monday return

Lodolo (groin) threw a successful extended bullpen session Wednesday and is set to throw off the mound again Saturday, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Assuming he comes out of Saturday's session without any hiccups, Lodolo will be set to return from the 15-day injured list to start against the Cardinals on Monday, the first day he'll be eligible for activation. The left-hander is working his way back from a left groin strain.

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Punches out 11 Padres in victory

Lodolo (3-0) earned the win over San Diego on Monday, allowing one run on one hit and two walks while striking out 11 batters over seven innings. Lodolo's outing got off to an inauspicious start when he gave up a home run to the first batter he faced (Jurickson Profar), but that would end up being the only hit given up by the 26-year-old hurler over seven frames. The southpaw finished with an impressive 22 whiffs and a season-high 11 punchouts, marking his second double-digit strikeout effort through four starts. Lodolo has given up one or zero runs in three of those appearances and is thriving thus far with a 1.88 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 31:6 K:BB over 24 innings.

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Goes five innings in no-decision

Lodolo didn't factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing three runs on six hits and three walks over five innings. He struck out four. After allowing just one run through his first two starts of the year, Lodolo struggled a bit Wednesday, though he'd ultimately put together a respectable effort against a potent Philadelphia offense as the Reds rallied for a comeback win. Overall, the 26-year-old southpaw is 2-0 with a 2.12 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 20:4 K:BB across 17 innings. Lodolo's currently slated to face the Padres on the road in his next outing.

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Notches second win

Lodolo (2-0) earned the win Friday over the Angels, allowing one run on seven hits over 6.1 innings. He struck out six. While not as dominant as his first outing, Lodolo turned in an incredibly efficient performance against the Angels, needing just 80 pitches (57 strikes) to record his first quality start of the season. The 26-year-old southpaw has allowed just one run through his first 12 innings this year after he pitched to a 6.29 ERA across seven starts in an injury-plagued 2023 campaign. Lodolo is slated for a tougher matchup against the Phillies in his next outing.

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Strikes out 10 in return

Lodolo (1-0) earned the win over the White Sox on Saturday, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out 10 over 5.2 scoreless innings. Lodolo was completely dominant in his return from the injured list, racking up 16 swings and misses on 91 pitches (62 strikes). The lefty showed a great feel for his looping curveball and looked nothing like a pitcher that just missed nearly a full calendar year of major-league action. He suffered a second stress reaction in his left tibia late last season and reported that he still did not feel 100 percent entering spring training, so the health concerns aren't going anywhere, but he appears to be all systems go for the time being. Lodolo lines up for a home start against the Angels next weekend.

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Set for season debut Saturday

Reds manager David Bell said Monday that Lodolo (calf) will be activated from the 15-day injured list to make his season debut Saturday against the White Sox, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Lodolo struggled in his final rehab start Sunday with Triple-A Louisville, allowing four runs over 2.2 innings. He tossed 64 pitches in that outing after throwing 77 pitches in his first rehab start, so don't expect the left-hander to work deep into Saturday's game. Even in a favorable matchup against a White Sox lineup that's without both Eloy Jimenez (adductor) and Luis Robert (hip), Lodolo looks like an iffy fantasy play in his first start back due to workload concerns.

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Sharp in rehab outing

Lodolo (calf) struck out eight over five innings of one-run ball in his first rehab start with Triple-A Louisville on Sunday. Lodolo not only fanned eight batters but he also induced 17 swinging strikes on 77 pitches. It's a very encouraging performance from the left-hander as he works his way back from a left calf issue. Lodolo is expected to make one more rehab start later this week before joining the Reds' rotation on April 10 against the Brewers.
