  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: To serve as No. 2 starter

Reds manager David Bell said Thursday that Lodolo will start the second game of the 2023 regular season, Charlie Goldsmith of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports. No surprise here after Hunter Greene was named the team's Opening Day starter on Thursday afternoon. Lodolo and Greene will aim to form an exciting one-two punch for the up-and-coming rotation in Cincinnati, with Graham Ashcraft possibly adding a third jab to the equation. Lodolo, 25, recorded a 3.66 ERA with a 131 strikeouts across his first 103.1 big-league innings in 2022.

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Adjusting to pitch clock

Lodolo threw two scoreless innings in his spring training debut against the Dodgers but struggled at times to adjust to the pitch clock, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. "Biggest thing was the pitch clock," Lodolo said. "Once or twice it got me there. I think it was in the stretch in the first inning, I was like, 'I got four seconds, we've got to go.'" Lodolo came into the outing wanting to work on his changeup, but at times his competitive juices took over and he didn't remember to work on that pitch until the second inning. You can expect to hear similar reports about other pitchers, especially at the beginning of spring training.

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Allows one run over five

Lodolo did not factor into the decision Saturday, allowing one run on two hits and five walks over five innings against the Cubs. He struck out five. Lodolo was able to keep the Cubs at bay for the most part over five innings. The only damage came in the second inning on an RBI triple from Nelson Velazquez. The left-hander also walked three batters in the inning and his five walks in the game were a season high. Lodolo has now allowed only one run in each of his last two starts.

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Fans six in no-decision

Lodolo allowed a run on four hits and a walk while striking out six in six innings of a 2-1 win over Milwaukee. He did not factor into the decision. All four hits against Lodolo came in the second inning, with the big blow being a solo homer by Hunter Renfroe on the first pitch of the frame. Over his final four innings, he retired 12 of the 13 batters he faced and ended the outing by striking out the side in the sixth. The 24-year-old has proven he belongs in the big leagues over his last eight starts, compiling a 2.84 ERA, 0.85 WHIP and 62:10 K:BB in 50.2 innings. His next, and perhaps final, start of the season will likely come next weekend in Chicago against the Cubs.

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Sleeper pitchers for Week 26 (Sept. 26-Oct. 5)

Lodolo has been a little shaky in his past couple turns but had 11 strikeouts in the two before that and has overall done well in the second half. His matchup against the Cubs makes him worth using even with just one start.

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Beans three Beantown batters

Lodolo (4-7) took the loss Tuesday against Boston, allowing three runs on three hits, three walks and three hit batsmen while striking out seven in five innings. Lodolo allowed one run in each of his last three innings, including solo homers to Rob Refsnyder and J.D. Martinez. He hit three batters Tuesday to bring his season total up to 18 in 92.1 innings. Since the All-Star break, he's compiled a 3.14 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 82:21 K:BB in 66 innings across 11 starts. His next start will likely be early next week in Pittsburgh.

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Possible waiver wire pickups

Lodolo's big finish continues apace with his second straight 11-strikeout effort, giving him a 2.95 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 11.1 K/9 in his past 10 starts. He leaned into his best pitch in this one, throwing his curveball 41 percent of the time (the second-most in any start this season), and the results speak for themselves. Granted, a win would have been nice against the Pirates, but he'll go for two next week with pretty good matchups against the Red Sox and Brewers. And then he'll get the Cubs twice in an extra-long Week 26, so it's likely Lodolo is just a fixture in your lineup the rest of the way.

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Piling up strikeouts

Lodolo (4-6) allowed three earned runs on six hits and no walks while striking out 11 across 6.1 innings to take the loss Wednesday against the Pirates. Lodolo was stuck with the loss after allowing a three-run home to Rodolfo Castro in the third inning. However, Lodolo was very impressive, racking up 16 swinging strikes on 102 total pitches while also inducing five groundball outs. He's shown an impressive ability to rack up strikeouts across his last three starts and 20.1 innings by punching out 31 hitters. In that same span, he's allowed only five earned runs. For the season, Lodolo has a 3.81 ERA with a 113:31 K:BB across 87.1 frames.

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Possible waiver wire pickups

I've been hyping up Lodolo's remaining schedule for at least a week now, and if you haven't taken heed, well, you missed out on a doozy Friday -- the best start of his young career, in fact. With it, he's now sporting a 2.80 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 10.5 K/9 in his past nine starts, and if you're thinking you'd like to get in on that, guess what? You're not too late. Lodolo remains available in more than one-third of CBS Sports leagues even with his upcoming matchup against the Pirates. After that, he's in for a two-start week against the Red Sox and the same Brewers team he blew away Friday. Then, it's one final matchup against the Cubs. Pick up Lodolo now, and it's possible you'll keep him in your lineup the rest of the way.

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Strikes out 11 batters

Lodolo (4-5) earned the win against the Brewers on Friday, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out 11 and walking none across eight innings. Lodolo limited the damage to just two runs while tossing 71 of 107 pitches for strikes across eight frames. This was one of Lodolo's best performances of the season, his first with double-digit strikeouts. The lefty has pitched well in his last five starts, picking up four quality starts while giving up nine runs in 33.1 innings for a 2.43 ERA. During that span, Lodolo has lowered his season ERA from 4.72 to where it sits now at a more palatable 3.78.

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Possible waiver wire pickups

Lodolo has had an up-and-down rookie season, but with his latest showing (and perhaps his best yet) Sunday against the Rockies, he's gotten his ERA below 4.00 for the first time all year. The ups have been more frequent than the downs lately, too, considering he now has a 2.89 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 10.2 K/9 in his past eight starts. His curveball has proven to be among the best of its kind, but it was the fastball racking up whiffs Sunday, as in nine of his 14 total. Now that we're into September, targeting a pitcher on the waiver wire is as much about his remaining matchups as anything, but Lodolo's are favorable, with two remaining starts against a Brewers lineup that struggles against left-handers and one each against the Pirates and Cubs.

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Settles for no-decision in matinee

Lodolo allowed two hits and a walk while striking out nine in six scoreless innings during the loss to the Rockies in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader. He didn't factor into the decision. Lodolo started a day later than anticipated after Saturday's matchup was postponed, but he had a strong showing after giving up seven runs in 12.1 innings over his last two outings. However, the southpaw was forced to settle for an unlucky no-decision since the Reds' bullpen struggled late in the game. Lodolo has struck out at least five batters in each of his last five starts, and he's posted a 3.30 ERA in 30 innings over that stretch. He tentatively lines up to make his next start on the road against Milwaukee next weekend.

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Saturday's game postponed

Lodolo will no longer start Saturday against the Rockies as the game has been postponed due to rain, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. The game was delayed for nearly four hours before it was ultimately called off. It will be made up right away Sunday as part of a traditional doubleheader, and Lodolo figures to simply move back to start one end of the twin bill.

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Coughs up three runs

Lodolo (3-5) yielded three runs on five hits and a walk over seven innings Sunday, striking out five and taking a loss against Washington. Lodolo tossed three shutout innings before coughing up a pair of runs in the fourth. He then served up a go-ahead solo shot to Ildemaro Vargas in the fifth. Lodolo is still searching for his first win since July 25; in six starts since that last victory, he's gone 0-2 with a 3.89 ERA and a 35:15 K:BB across 34.2 frames. Lodolo will carry a 4.30 ERA into his expected home matchup against the Rockies next weekend.

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Runs out of gas in no-decision

Lodolo allowed four runs on three hits, two walks and a hit batsman while striking out five in 5.1 innings in a 7-6 loss Tuesday in Philadelphia. He did not factor into the decision. Lodolo retired the first 11 batters he faced and did not allow a hit until the sixth inning. Things fell apart in the sixth as the rookie allowed four baserunners and each eventually came around to score. He has now hit a batter in four straight starts and 11 times in 12 starts in the majors. Through 60 big-league innings, he has a 4.35 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 77:28 K:BB.

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Sleeper pitchers for Week 21 (Aug. 22-28)

You like seeing the Nationals on the schedule for Lodolo. The Phillies not so much, but the rookie with the sinister curveball did handle them well enough in his very last start, striking out eight over seven shutout innings.

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Possible waiver wire pickups

Consistency has been an issue for the rookie, but just when you're about ready to write off Lodolo, he turns in a start that reminds you just how good he can be. His latest success Wednesday came against a Phillies offense that generally throttles lefties, but he shut them out over seven innings, notching eight strikeouts on 16 swinging strikes. The curveball was responsible for 11 of those swinging strikes, and he leaned on it more in this start, throwing it one-third of the time instead of the usual one-fourth. It's a majestic pitch and worth sticking with Lodolo through his occasional control lapses. Few pitchers as widely available as him offer his sort of impact potential.

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Strikes out eight batters

Lodolo did not factor into the decision against the Phillies on Wednesday, allowing no runs on five hits while striking out eight and walking two over seven innings. Lodolo found himself in a pitchers' duel Wednesday with Ranger Suarez, both of whom lasted seven innings and struck out eight batters without allowing a run. Lodolo tossed 64 of 98 pitches for strikes, showing good command with only two walks. Although he did not get the win, the lefty picked up a quality start, his first since July 31 and his third overall. After allowing seven earned runs in his last 9.1 innings, Wednesday's outing may have set Lodolo on the right track. He will take a 4.12 ERA into his next outing.

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Struggles with control in loss

Lodolo (3-4) took the loss against the Cubs on Thursday, giving up four runs on seven hits and four walks while striking out six batters over 4.2 innings. Lodolo threw a first-pitch strike to 19 of the 24 batters he faced, yet he issued four free passes and hit one batter. The rookie gave up three runs in the first inning, struck out the side in the second and allowed three baserunners in each of the third and fourth frames in the uneven performance. Lodolo has walked multiple batters in each of his past five starts, and he's added five hit batsmen over that stretch. He's registered a strong 12.1 K/9 over 47.2 innings on the season, but his control issues have led to an unsavory 4.72 ERA and 1.66 WHIP.

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Sleeper pitchers for Week 19 (Aug. 8-14)

The injury-ridden prospect appeared to be coming into his own with back-to-back dominant efforts against the Marlins and Orioles, but then hit a speed bump Brewers over the weekend. The Cubs offense rates more like the first two, giving Lodolo another chance to pile up whiffs with his breaking ball.
